South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust A guide for professionals Emotional Wellbeing Team Gateshead CAMHS Providing a range of NHS services 1 in Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland.
Who are we? The Emotional Wellbeing Team Gateshead Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) is a multidisciplinary team of professionals from education, counselling and health with additional specialist CAMH training. We work with children and young people aged between 4-18 years old who live in Gateshead. What do we do? We aim to have a positive effect on the mental health and emotional wellbeing of those children and young people who are experiencing, or who are at risk of developing emotional, behavioural and psychological difficulties. We work closely with schools, parents, carers and other professionals so that we can collaboratively support children and young people aged 4-18yrs. We offer preventative and early intervention strategies including consultation, liaison, assessment and short term individual, group, and family work. We promote resilience against the development of mental health problems at an early stage so that any further behavioural, emotional or psychological distress is prevented or minimised. 2
How can we help? Consultation and Advice We provide practical advice and support to professionals who come into contact with children and young people and are concerned about their mental health. We are also available to help develop partnerships on mental health promotion and prevention Assessment - of mental health of children and young people within their family context, to gain an in-depth understanding of their individual needs Groupwork - We are able to provide programmes to children, young people and parents, to look at, and work through, their particular difficulties in a group setting. We can also enhance other professionals groupwork skills, so that they can carry out programmes with other children Direct work - If necessary we can offer short term individual sessions for treatment interventions Training - We provide training to other professionals on mental health issues to increase awareness and reduce the stigma attached to mental health Signposting - If we feel the child or young person could benefit from services provided from an alternative agency we can redirect referrals on to them 3
Where are we based? We are based at Grassbanks Sector Base, Gateshead. Most of our work takes place within our base, we can be flexible if needed. How can you refer? All professionals working with children and young people can complete an Emotional Wellbeing Team referral form and send through to the team, please telephone for information. Referral Flow Chart Children and Young People aged 4-18yrs with mental health difficulties All Professionals who work with Children and Young Telephone consultation and advice Gateshead CAMHS Emotional Wellbeing Team OR Children & Young People s Service Joint Work with relevant professional and referrer Consultation and Advice Assessment and Intervention 4
What information is required when making a referral? The more information we receive the easier it is for us to know whether or not we are the right service for that particular child. We need details of: presenting difficulties e.g. when did the problem begin, who is affected by the problem the context in which the problem presents e.g. family history and composition any other significant factors e.g. family breakdown, bereavement, substance misuse what has been tried already to help with the problem 5
How do we link with other Mental Health services? The Emotional Wellbeing Team - Gateshead CAMHS is part of a wider group of specialist services for children and young people with mental health difficulties in Gateshead that are structured within a tiered model. Tier 4 Very specialist services, often children away from home *NTW Inpatients Tier 3 Specialist Multi-disciplinary Teams Newcastle & Gateshead Children and Young People s Service Tier 2 Individual professionals trained in CAMH Emotional Wellbeing Team - Gateshead CAMHS (CYPS - Special circumstances) Tier 1 Universal child professionals GPs, Paediatricians, Teachers, Health Vistors, School Nurses, Midwives, Early Years Workers, Social Workers, Youth Workers, Playworkers We work collaboratively with other parts of CAMHS with the aim of ensuring that children and young people s mental health needs are met by the most appropriate tier of service. 6
How can you access prompt advice? We provide telephone advice and consultation every weekday between pm, we are closed during Bank Holidays:- Emotional Wellbeing Team This service is for us to give you quick advice when you have concerns about the mental health of a child or young person that you are working with. What information are we able to share? We will share relevant information with other professionals if it will benefit each child and young person. We do this within the context of Data Protection legislation and Gateshead Council Safeguarding procedures, and therefore usually share information about children and young people only when informed consent to do so has been given by those responsible for their care. Do we respond in an emergency? We are not a crisis intervention service. We will prioritise referrals depending on the information you provide and the child or young person s current mental health presentation. 7
