1 December 15, 2016 Jim Ives, Editor Thursday s Meeting Summary President Regan Ford led today s meeting, which was our annual holiday meeting. Lunch was great and generous portions of prime rib were served. Formal meeting opened with the singing of the National Anthem. Colleen Nieman did the invocation and she talked about a Newfoundland water rescue dog named Help on Lake Michigan. She believes Help is the middle name of Rotary through the service we provide and closed with thoughts of the season. Today s greeter, Kathleen Kalil introduced our seven guests and they included: Karin Arneson, Sarah Ford, Janet Hollmann, Mary Robertson, Janet Gleichauf, Peder Blohm, and Beth Hogan. Guests were serenaded in traditional manner. Jim Mackey led the 50/50 raffle today. President Regan drew the winning ticket. Pedr Blohm was the winner of $19. Diane Ives thanked the Club for the support her family received regarding recent passing of Jim s father. Dearborn Rotary has adopted a local family for this holiday season. Dearborn Schools referred the family to Rotary. Family includes six children, one with Down s syndrome. Diane has purchased a number of gift items for the family and is looking for donations to help cover the cost. Two of the children are old enough to work and any leads on jobs would be appreciated. One (think 20 years old) is interested in real estate. Janice Gilliland passed a sign-up sheet for greeters and invocation givers beginning January 1, Please volunteer. Margaret Blohm said our next meeting, , is a fun white elephant gift auction. Please bring nicely wrapped unwanted gifts to next meeting to be auctioned as a fundraiser. Guess bring money to do some auction shopping. PE Bob Gleichauf said nine nights of Santa Snaps remain. Club could use some second shift Santas for the final week of the event. Please volunteer to be a Santa or ask someone you know to be a Santa volunteer. President Regan announced Jim Mackey is retiring from the Club at the end of the year and we need a new Sergeant at Arms. The Sergeant at Arms is responsible for weekly set -up and take-down Rotary meeting displays. We are looking to turn the role into a committee. If you can volunteer to serve this duty maybe once every four weeks, please contact Regan to volunteer. The Henry Ford College Chorus provided the entertainment for today s meeting. Chorus is a mix of men and women who have a wide range in ages. HFC Music Professor Kevin Dewey led the chorus, which was accompanied by a piano player. There was much banter between Kevin Dewey and our HFC Club members. We heard Jingle Bells (with jingle bells), Carol of the Bells, Born Born in Bethlehem (a spiritual), and a traditional carol set to a modern jazz tune. Club participated in several sing-a-long carols. Chorus was enthusiastically applauded and they then left. President Regan conducted the Ugly Christmas Sweater contest. Prize was a $15. Subway gift card. Your reporter thought the participants looked in the holiday spirit and did not have ugly sweaters. Sara Ford, Kathy Gapa, Bob Gleichauf, Janice Gilliland, Karin Arneson, Janet Hollmann, and Jim Ives were the participants. A preliminary round based on Club applause narrowed it down to three finalists. The three finalists were then subject to another round of review and Club applause. Winner of the contest was Karin Arneson. Rotary meeting ended with singing of God Bless America. 2 Page 2 The Rotary Foundation Giving Every Rotarian Every Year Our goal for annual giving is set at 7, If every member contributes to the Rotary Foundation Every Rotarian Every Year program, we will make the pledges with no problem. Remember It s not about the money, but what the money can do. The following people have contributed at least $100 this year to The Rotary Foundation. Margaret Blohm, Diane Ives, CDG Jim Ives, Kathleen Kalil, Don Karcher, Aldo Martin, Mike Maldegen, Colleen Nieman, Shannon Peterson, Merritt Robertson, Darlene Schoolmaster, Ray Trudeau. Due to privacy rules at Rotary International, we no longer know who has contributed to the Foundation. With that said, If you have submitted money to The Rotary Foundation in excess of $100 and would like to be recognized here, please let Merritt Robertson know of your contribution. Announcements Need X-Ray meeting minute writers. Promise maximum writing is only once every six weeks. Can volunteer for even once a quarter or year. Please contact David Anderson. Janice Gilliland is looking for greeters and invocation givers. Please let her know if you re willing to serve. David Anderson is asking for Please let President Regan know if you would be willing to serve as Sergeant-At- Arms for the club. Job includes set up and tear down for the meeting, as well as running 50/50 raffle. No meeting December 29th due to the holiday break. Next meeting will be January 5th, weeks left for a tax deductible contribution to The Rotary Foundation in See Merritt Robertson or Jim Ives if you need help. White Elephant Auction Next Week Bring a nicely wrapped item to auction off next week for a FUNraising good time. This will be a blind auction. 4 Page 4 Update on Member Josh Tynan I had a good phone conversation with member Josh Tynan late yesterday afternoon. You'll recall he was knocked off his motorcycle by another vehicle last spring, and suffered serious, multiple injuries. Since then, he has undergone almost continuous surgeries and rehab therapy. Because of mobility issues in his house, he spent 10 weeks in a local hotel, where he could get around, continuing therapy. To keep from "going bananas", he did a lot of reading...then moved to Netflex movies. He's now back home, where he is happy to be able to do things around the house to keep busy. He has one more surgery, on a rotator cuff, scheduled for January, followed by more therapy, into the spring months. He works at how to gain as much useful, positive learning as he can out of the experience. He sounded great, and in good spirits over the phone. Neil Allen New Member Proposed Pursuant to article XI, Sections 8,9,10, of the bylaws of Dearborn Rotary, the following individual or individuals have been proposed for membership in the classification indicated, and has indicated their willingness to serve. (Sec8.) Any member objecting shall notify the Board of Directors stating their reasons for objection in writing within 10 days of publishing the first notice. (Sec9) Otherwise the member shall be considered duly elected (Sec10.) Proposed: Zeinab Dabajeh Proposer: Annette Langell Classification: Social Worker Two Weeks Left Remember, there are 2 weeks left to send your tax deductible contribution to The Rotary Foundation. Please note that while Every Rotarian Every Year suggests $100 or more, the more is needed. Lives are changed dramatically by the donations of Rotarians like you. Clean water, literacy, health initiatives, peace initiatives, Polio elimination, the list goes on. Thank you for your past generosity, as well as your future generosity. If you need help submitting our contribution, please contact Merritt Robertson at mrobertson445@gmail.com, or Jim Ives at jives@att.net. Thank You!

5 Page 5 January 28th is the annual Big Band Concert by Henry Ford Big Band. This a fundraiser for our club that only requires us to attend and bring friends. It is an incredible night of excellent music, and this year Karen Newman will perform with the band. Rick Goward mailed out an order form to all members. Please fill out the form and get it sent back in as soon as possible so you have an opportunity for great seats (they re all great). However, for a mere $125, you will receive 4 tickets, and all 4 are invited to attend a reception honoring The Rotary Foundation s 100th year with Karen Newman after the concert. Don t Delay!!!
