1 Mental Health Learning in the K-12 classroom Suicide prevention Harlan Community Schools Courtney King-Crum, Elementary Counselor Leanne Travis, Counselor

2 Our Journey Spring 2014 Counseling team was asked to research how to incorporate suicide prevention into our school system Counseling team decided to begin with training the staff school year Kognitio Mental Health Awareness: ACES/trauma (speaker-half day PD) Depression/Anxiety (speaker-half day PD) Childhood Grief (Ted E. Bear Hollow-speaker) Sexual Abuse (Project Harmony-speaker)

6 SOS (Signs of Suicide) Acknowledge: Listen to your friend, don t ignore threats Care: Let your friend know you care Tell: Tell a trusted adult that you are worried about your friend

7 SOS Signs of Suicide: Training Adults Intro 1. Why do you think the SOS program is important for our community? a. The SOS program can help differentiate between normal development and what may be a more serious mental health issue b. According to the CDC, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among people aged c. More than 90% of youth who die by suicide have diagnosable mental disorders, most likely depression and/or substance abuse, which are treatable d. 80% of youth with mental illness are not identified or receiving services e. Half of all mental health disorders start by the age of 14 f. Many people are uncomfortable with the topic of suicide. Implementing a program
