2 PURPOSE Join Chicago s Fashion Star Barbara Bates to help in Knocking Out Breast Cancer. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, breast cancer survivors will model a special collection of fashions designed by Barbara Bates to raise money for the Barbara Bates Foundation Institutional Grant on Disparity and Education of Breast Cancer. The grant will serve to educate and address the disparities of breast cancer care faced by Barbara Bates women in the African American and Latino communities. For over 25 years, Barbara has been known in Chicago and nationwide as a leader in creating fashionable styles for celebrities as well as the everyday man and woman. Millions across America came to know Barbara following her appearance on the NBC reality show Fashion Star during Spring Barbara knows about dealing with reality after being diagnosed with breast cancer in Barbara won her battle against breast cancer and has a desire to help others. WHO THIS NIGHT IS ALL ABOUT One in eight women, or 12.6% of all women, will get breast cancer in her lifetime. More Caucasian women get cancer; more African American women die from cancer. Breast cancer increases with age and every woman is at risk. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 15 and 54. Early detection of breast cancer through self exams and yearly mammography after age 40 offers the best chance for survival. Ninety-six percent of women who find and treat breast cancer early will be cancer-free after five years. Proceeds from this event will go to the breast cancer outreach and education programs of Mount Sinai Hospital. On October 12, 2014, special celebrity guests and friends will join Barbara in a star studded event to help raise money and bring attention to fighting a disease that affects so many lives.

Since beginning her fashion empire in 1986, Chicago based fashion designer Barbara Bates has become a dynamic leader in the fashion industry. Bates Designs has dressed some of the worlds most fabulous fashionistas, entertainers, celebrity clients, community leaders and influential figures, including Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Harvey, and the late Whitney Houston just to name a few. MISSION The Barbara Bates Foundation expanded to uplift the spirits and attitudes of Chicago s disadvantaged, inner-city youth living in poverty. In 1999, Barbara founded the Barbara Bates Foundation, which donates custom prom attire to inner-city high school students who excel in school despite difficult circumstances. The Foundation expands its mission to educate and address the disparities of breast cancer care faced by women in the African American and Latino communities.
