Remembrance Day 2014 At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted the allied terms of unconditional surrender. RED poppies were among the first flowers to bloom on the devastated battlefields of Northern France and Belgium during World War I.The Poppy of Flanders Fields, as it became known, has long since been recognised as the international memorial flower. This year marks the 96th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War. By the end of the Second World War Armistice Day had grown from solely a remembrance of the men and women of the Great War into something larger, becoming a day to honour all those who had fallen in war. With this evolution came a change of name and 11 November became known as Remembrance Day. Under this name Australians today remember all those who served and sacrificed during times of war and on peacekeeping operations in recent decades each November 11. Services are held at memorials, RSL clubs and schools across the country and 11am on this day, each including a minute's silence dedicated to the fallen. 2 Message from Cherylee You know we are getting close to the holiday season when Christmas decorations appear in shops! This month we are finalising this year s Annual Report in time for our Annual General Meeting which will be held on the 28 th of November, at our Commercial Road, Newstead premises at 3:00pm. Footprints clients and staff have been tremendously active. To provide you with a snapshot of our activities over the last twelve months we have provided over 70,000 hours of support to approximately 1,500 clients who receive services in their place of residence and in the community. To facilitate this growth, our staff numbers have climbed to over 80 employees. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff for their continued support and efforts in delivering the wide range of services to our clients. And I would really like to say thank you to our clients and supporters who have been so patient and supportive as these changes have been occurring. Footprints has also been successful in tendering for additional federally funded aged care and mental health services in both North and South Brisbane, in particular, Centre Based Activities, Transport, ARC Program and Allied Health and we continue to submit applications for funding to increase and provide complimentary services to our existing programs. I would also like to congratulate staff who participated in last month s Walk for Awareness event to coincide with Mental Health Week. Well done! The Australian Government undertook a Quality Review in early October of our over 65 programs at 105 Commercial Road. Congratulations to all the teams in meeting all standards as part of the Quality Review. Thank you to our clients who provided such wonderful feedback to the Assessor as part of the Review process and to Peggy and Co-ordinators (Aynsley, Paul and Amanda) for this excellent outcome. Some of you may have seen staff wearing our new t shirts and we have added signage to some of our vehicles. I would love to hear your feedback on these new initiatives so please let me know. A reminder that the G20 Summit will be held on Friday 14 th of November, for the latest update visit Free events will run throughout Brisbane from 24 th of October to the 16 th of November, for more information visit the G20 Cultural Celebrations website : If you have any concerns or queries about how this will affect you, please contact Footprints on As a consequence of this Event, our office will be closed from 4:30pm Wednesday, 12 th of November and will reopen 7:30am Monday, 17 th November, For all in home support during this time, please contact your Footprints staff member. Warm regards Cherylee 2

COMMUNITY CARE TEAM This month we had Hannah and Jess attend a very informative training around Suicide Intervention. The training provided both workers with skills such as how to develop a safe plan, how to keep the person safe at the present time and how to connect the person to life. The team would like to thank you for your patience whilst we did some shuffling of Clients, Case Managers and Case Workers, hoping now that each client is familiar with whom their worker is. RESIDENT SUPPORT PRO- GRAM RSP have had a very busy and productive month for October. Case workers are at capacity with minimal wait list at the moment. RSP group outing was very enjoyable. Clients were transported to Deep Water Bend at Bracken Ridge where they enjoyed morning tea, a BBQ and fishing. Clients enjoyed sitting by the water throwing a line in. Congratulations to Wendy Jordan, one very happy client who caught her very first fish All clients that participated enjoyed the day and are excited for the next months outing which is to be announced. HOMELESS OUTREACH PROGRAM Just a reminder touch football for workers and clients- every Tuesday 10am-12pm at New Farm park. All welcome to participate, volunteer or just watch. It s a great opportunity to get yourself ready for the big Christmas Touch Football match on 16 th December. Drop-In continues to provide services including Anglicare nursing service, GP and Centrelink. We continue to provide a hot meal for people for a gold coin donation. For catering purposes please attend Drop In before 11.30am. The Music Group Dreaming Stars is back up and running. It s on Mondays 1-3pm at our new office- 31 Thomas St West End. If you are interested in learning an instrument, rekindling a lost passion for music, singing and enjoying a relaxing atmosphere please come along. Take care, Paul, Nerida, Peter, David, Jo and Sara 3

PARTNERS IN RECOVERY PROGRAM PIR are continuing to do our thing up at Light St as the end of the year draws near. We will have a new contract case worker joining us soon for three months which will be very exciting for us to broaden our capacity and increase the support we can provide for our clients. Jade has successfully applied for funding to widen her mental health training program for housing providers, which will be rolling out in collaboration with the Department of Housing & Public Works. This project aims to provide person first recovery focused mental health training for housing workers of the DHPW. This training aims to promote recovery focused practice across the service sector, specifically reaching staff who are not typically employed in the mental health field, so as to broaden recovery practice. Further, this project aims to increase communication and collaboration between mental health clinicians and housing staff of the DHPW. This will be a great achievement to support both tenants and housing providers to work together to address the issues that arise in properties. We re continuing to be kept busy with referrals coming through and as always, feel free to give us a call or send us an if you have any questions, referrals, or just want to say hello. Kim, Jade, Ryan and Anne ACTIONING RECOVERY AND CITIZENSHIP PROGRAM The month of October for the ARC team has been very busy. The hustle and bustle of changing office space, new furniture for the Key workers and rearranging of others. We also have had some challenges with the buildings sewerage system. We have been settling in and learning about our area. Having plenty of discussion about the G20 as a lot of our participant s are living in the area and we are also pretty excited about having the 2 days off. We have a new administration person who is now starting to take the reigns of the running of our great office. Our wonderful team of people has been slowing building great relationships and learning about each other. We are all excited about the prospect of all the new and wonderful challenges that will be coming with starting such an exciting new Program and we have a team of wonderful and dedicated people to the vision. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Beryl, Barbara, Joan, Alfred and Tony are celebrating their birthdays in November. Best wishes for a happy birthday and a great year to come! 4

If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes? 2. Why a round pizza gets delivered in a square box? 3.Why people pay to go up in tall buildings, and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground? 4.Why people say they slept like a baby, when babies normally wake up every two hours? 5. Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are flat? 6. What would the speed of lightning be if it didn t zigzag? 7. Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but has to check when you say the paint is wet? 6

You re Deserted on an Island what three things would you want to have with you? I would definitely need my Zumba teacher to keep me fit and smiling. I can t live without my 2 fluffy dogs because they make me happy and I reckon I would need a boat so that I can visit people from time to time. Although this last one might be considered cheating If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life- What would you choose? It would have to be slightly sweet and salty popcorn. I can never eat it without making a big mess and I can t stop eating it until that bag is empty. What do you love most about your job? The variety of people from all walks of life If you had you own reality TV show what would it be called? Where is my wallet? What is your ideal weekend? It would be relaxing at a resort near a beautiful beach sipping cocktails and getting served all day. What do you love most about your job? It has been lovely to meet all the staff and clients ( come and say helloif we haven t met!) What is your favourite quote? Success is not final, failure is not fatal it is the courage to continue that counts. Winston Churchill What is your ideal weekend? Going for a wander up Mt Coo-tha, playing badminton in the backyard and getting all my washing dry! If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life what would you choose? Seafood make me happy, mangos make me smile Where is your favourite place to eat? By the sea, on the grass with a blanket What do you love most about your job? Flexibility autonomy creativity 7

What is your ideal weekend? Going to beach with friends. What chore do you absolutely dislike doing? Cleaning bathrooms. If you could witness any event past, present or future- what would it be? Cat Stevens gig Hello. My name is Lynne and I started my new role at Footprints as Nursing Care Coordinator at the end of September. I am a Registered Nurse with experience in Aged, Community and Palliative Care Nursing. Part of my role is helping to assist people to make positive plans so that if you become unwell everyone is aware of what your wishes are. I can give advice on completing Advance Health Directives or just chat about any concerns faced if health deteriorates. I am passionate about assisting people who need to enter an aged care facility to find a home that suits them and I can help with the transition from home in the community to a new home in residential care. I will also be involved in providing health promotion and education for groups of clients to help people towards recovery goals. I will be assisting clients who have complex health needs to access health care and can help people find a GP that suits their needs. I also work alongside Jackie, the Occupational Therapist to assist with enabling clients to live as independently at home for as long as possible. All in all a full and varied role. I look forward to meeting some of you in the future. Hi I m Jackie, and I have been in my role as Occupational Therapist at Footprints for almost six months. In that time I have met some of you in your homes and others of you at the Footprints day centre. My focus is on helping you to remain living independently at home and to be able to manage all the daily activities that are important to you. This is achieved in several ways:- Sourcing appropriate equipment to enable you to continue to perform daily activities independently. Sourcing aids to help you mobilise safely and independently around your home and community. Referrals to appropriate organisations that can fix or modify furniture and fittings in your home to suit your needs, such as raise a sofa or fit a grab rail. Provide therapy to assist in restoring function and reablement to good health and independence. Falls safety prevention and advice. Anyone can ask to be referred to see me if they are having difficulty with any aspect of their daily lives, either through their case manager or by speaking with me directly. I look forward to meeting more of you as my six months become one year. 8

Fire Prevention Of course, the best way to practice fire safety is to make sure a fire doesn't break out in the first place. That means you should always be aware of potential hazards in your home. Start by keeping these tips in mind: Electrical Appliances, Cords, and Outlets Are your electrical appliances in good condition, without loose or frayed cords or plugs? Are your outlets overloaded with plugs from the TV, computer, printer, video game system, and stereo? Are you overusing an extension cord? Do the light fixtures in your home use bulbs that are the correct wattage? Does your home contain GFCIs (ground fault circuit interrupters) and/or AFCIs (arc fault circuit interrupters), which prevent electrical shock and fire by shutting off faulty circuits? Consumer Forum New Choices in Home Care We are conducting information sessions on the Consumer Directed Care Packages [ CDC] which will replace the current Aged Care Packages. The first sessions will be held after Lunch as part of the Centre Based Activity Programs. However if you do not attend this program you are still most welcome. Just contact your case manager or case worker to organise transport. Dates: Monday, November 24 Tuesday, November 25 Thursday, November 26 Regards Peggy 10

FUNNY CORNER On an overseas flight, a lawyer and an older man were in adjoining seats. The lawyer asked the senior if he d like to play a little game. The older man was tired, and he told the lawyer he only wanted to sleep. But the lawyer insisted the game was a lot of fun. Here s how it works, he said. I ll ask you a question. If you can t come up with the answer, you have to give me a dollar. Then it s your turn to ask me one. But if I can t answer it, I have to give you $20. The senior figured if he just got this over with, maybe he could get some sleep. So he agreed to play. The first question from the lawyer was How far apart are the earth and the moon? The senior stayed completely silent, reached for a dollar, and gave it to the lawyer. Then he said, My turn. What walks upstairs backward and comes downstairs forward? The lawyer was stumped. He thought and thought. He tried to remember all the riddles he knew. He searched every corner of his brain. He even cheated and asked the flight attendants and other passengers. Finally he gave up. He woke up the older man and gave him a twenty. The senior stuffed the twenty in his coat and went immediately back to sleep. The lawyer couldn t stand it. He woke up the older man and said, I have to know. What walks upstairs backward and comes downstairs forward? The senior got out his wallet, gave the lawyer a dollar, and went back to sleep. 13
