2 CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES This conference will focus on the changing healthcare environment, scientific validity of methodology in clinical practice as well as cost effectiveness and impact on patient outcomes. Conference topics were specifically chosen to enhance the existing physician information base, improve clinical capabilities and increase the therapeutic options to the physician. Upon completion of this conference, participants should be able to: Compare breast cancer treatment options and apply the latest information regarding these options. Evaluate breast cancer patient and disease characteristics including co-morbidity. Interpret current data on breast cancer management and relevant laboratory assessment of tumor biology. Discuss the interaction between the mind, body and spirit as it relates to healing. Discuss the differences between healing and curing in the disease process. Discuss the principles of Eastern healing modalities. Define holistic therapies and the benefit of each. Define the importance of diet and exercise in the prevention of cancer and other diseases. Discuss the importance of establishing your own healing environment as a health care professional. Discuss the importance of clinical trials in Western Medicine. Discuss what creating balance in your life means. Define triple negative breast cancers. Identify and discuss triple negative breast cancers and their correlation to BRCA positive status. Discuss molecular heterogeneity in breast cancer and it s applications in decision-making. Familiarize the audience with strategies for molecularly targeted therapy and the clinical results of these approaches. Review newer directions in diagnostics and therapeutic for breast cancer. Identify and discuss the superior imaging capability of MRI. Define the subtleties of interpretation. Discuss the impact of better imaging on treatment choices. Discuss the ethical implications of genetic testing for breast cancer. Discuss the true reasons we practice medicine. WHO SHOULD ATTEND This conference is designed to provide practical, clinical information for the generalist as well as the cancer specialist; medical and surgical oncology, surgery, pathology, radiology, obstetrical, gynecological, primary care, and family care. TEACHING METHOD Conference participants will benefit through a presentation of didactic topics, a panel discussion, and question and answer sessions. CANCELLATION POLICY If you cannot attend, TREI will refund the registration fee, less a $30 administrative fee provided it is requested in writing prior to Monday, April 9, No refund will be issued after this date or for non-attendance. There is no charge for a substitute registrant. In the event of conference cancellation, notification will be given two weeks in advance of the conference and the fee fully refunded. Dr. DuPree, a surgeon who is focusing her practice on breast cancer care, believes that using a holistic approach to healing a patient is extremely important. It is her position that marrying both holistic therapies with state-of-the-art, leading-edge technology can lead to better outcomes even in people with life-threatening disease, such as cancer. This vibrant, witty mother of two sons, whose skin-sparing mastectomies performed in conjunction with plastic surgeon Robert Skalicky, D.O., were featured live on the Internet in October 1999, has won numerous awards for her medical work as well as her humanitarian endeavors. The abovementioned Web cast and subsequent television documentary received a coveted Gracie Allen Award in New York City in April Additionally, Dr. DuPree was given the Clara Barton Humanitarian Award from the American Red Cross for her on-going contributions to the treatment of breast cancer in 2002, the Visions of Hope Award from Astra Zeneca in December 2002, the Northampton Township Citizen of the Month in February 2003, and the Women Pioneering the Future Award from the Pennsylvania Commission for Women in March She is on the advisory committee for Gilda s Club, Young Survivor s Coalition, and Breast Cancer.org, and the Holistic Center at St. Mary Medical Center. She travels throughout the United States training other physicians in breast ultrasound and intervention, hoping to promote a higher quality of care for all women and men requiring breast surgery.
