1 Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove CAMPUS FLAG What a Volunteer Means to Me According to Merriam Webster s dictionary, a volunteer is a person who expresses a willingness to undertake a service. Being a volunteer means that you are offering something something that is not required nor an obligation. You do not volunteer for the money or recognition. You volunteer for the hope of making a difference. By helping you can see that your time is worth it. No matter how small or big the task it shows that you are capable of doing good. The benefits of volunteering are a two way street. Not only do the Members get to build this wonderful relationship with you but you get to make new friends. Friends that care and worry about you when you re not there. Friends that are anxious for your return. Your selflessness does not go unnoticed by the Members and staff. You have made a positive impact with the sharing of your skills and talents. Everyone of you are valued and appreciated, though we may not say it all the time. We all have one purpose and that is to make the lives of our Veterans the best possible. All of you have made a difference and for that we are truly grateful. What an honor it is to have you in our building and being a part of the Veterans lives. Fun fact: we currently have around 215 volunteers that give of their time with an average of 1050 hours per month and the number keeps growing. Whatever your reason for volunteering thank you for choosing us. Happy Volunteer Month! Sincerely, Laura Bruce, Deputy Commandant
2 We care for the very frail and elderly Members. Most can be very immunocompromised, meaning they cannot fight off infections as easily. Please help us keep you and your loved ones safe and free from infection. Some ways you can help are: 1. Practice good hand hygiene. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds when visibly soiled. Jadyn has been volunteering with the Veterans Home for a year and assists with the Fairchild Hall Chimes program as well as provides 1:1 music visits. Jadyn was instrumental in assisting the Fairchild Hall Members with their first on the road performance to Oakridge Care Center. Jadyn has a love of music and is currently studying Music Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She hopes to further her education by earning her Masters of Music Therapy degree, with thoughts of attending ASU. Jadyn has been playing piano since the age of 4. She also plays guitar, ukulele, and sings. When asked, Jadyn shared that her favorite part of volunteering is, making music with the Members. The Members enjoy Jadyn s kind manner and fun loving positive attitude. 2. Use good cough etiquette and use tissue or cough into your inner arm not your hands. 3. Please do not visit when you are ill. Wait until your symptoms are resolved. **Be fever free at least 24 hours or longer. **No diarrhea for at least 48 hours or more. 4. Be observant of any units that are closed and on isolation. Refrain from visiting if possible. If you must see someone on that unit please first contact the unit nurse to see about personal protective equipment such as gowns, gloves, or mask if needed. ***Volunteers, please review enclosed material for additional requirements. Events Thank you Jadyn for all you do! 2 Jan./Feb Union Grove Volunteer Newsletter

4 Christmas at Gates: Mrs. James Cash always made sure that her late husbands room at Gates looked liked a picture from Better Homes and Gardens. She and members of her family have lent and set up the decorations in Gates dining room, D-wing (where Mr. James Cash resided) and the front foyer. They spent several hours working on the decorations and providing Members with entertainment. Ms. Ellen Jante has added to the decorating with door decorations and picture packaging too. Thank you for your continued support and for all the beautiful lent decorations. I know all the Members and staff sincerely appreciate everyones hard work and talent. 4 Jan./Feb Union Grove Volunteer Newsletter
