1 Position Description VET Trainer, Education and Training About CERES CERES Community Environment Park is an award winning, not-for profit, environment park and urban farm located by the Merri Creek in East Brunswick, Melbourne. Once a landfill site and wasteland, today CERES is a thriving, vibrant community. With over 400,000 visitors a year, CERES is the most visited environmental centre in Australia. We are open to innovation and evolution, resulting in a diversity of programs that link to environmental, cultural, economic and spiritual themes. Our park is a landscape for inspiration, application and immersion in sustainability allowing the creation of learning experiences for a wide range of audiences: from early childhood to seniors, marginalised groups to individual members of the community. But we reach further than the bounds of our park, and our people with passion, expertise and purpose reach out across Victoria, Australia and the world. Our learning experiences are delivered by four areas: Excursions & Incursions School students, both on and off site Outreach Education for teachers in schools and early learning centres Training Youth and Adult programs including VET training, Disability Programs and Adult Courses. Global Engaging global communities Training Programs Our programs are aimed at youth and adults and are designed to be accessible to all. We specialise in tailored programs for marginalised groups such as people with a disability, asylum seekers, new migrants, youth at risk and the under and unemployed. We aim to 1
2 build resilience and skills in participants to navigate the future with a sustainable tool kit and to tread lightly on the natural world. Our educators are passionate experts in their fields. Programs that shone this year were permaculture design, environmental education, urban farming, sustainable gardening, cooking, bread baking, beekeeping, natural dyeing and basket weaving. These were so well attended that additional workshops needed to be added to satisfy demand. Areas of Training at CERES 1. VET Training The VET Training program began in 1999 with students from the Heatherwood School and has expanded to now include 14 programs from mainstream, community and specialist schools. CERES is a registered training organisation (RTO) delivering accredited training in Certificate II in Horticulture and Certificate II in Kitchen Operations. Participants are exposed to practical work experience and learning outcomes that lead to a competency in a specified unit. Training is experiential, providing students with an opportunity to work on real projects. These projects have outcomes that are beneficial for themselves, CERES and the wider community. At the completion of the year, students are awarded a certificate of attainment that they can take onto further studies and/or work experience. 2. DHS Training This program is an initiative funded by the Department of Human Services and involves the training and supervision of young adults who have a specified intellectual disability. The CERES program offers a unique experience to these participants by providing an environment that is both rich and nurturing. The program encourages participants to develop social and interpersonal relationships within the CERES community. Activities include gardening, animal care, cooking classes, construction, film, art and cultural excursions. 3. CERES Courses CERES Courses includes weekend workshops and short courses that provide practical skills in the areas of organic gardening, organic cooking, craft, permaculture and environmental education for community and tailored programs for special groups. The courses have both an accredited and pre-accredited focus. CERES is registered as an ACE provider (Adult Community Education) and receives funding assistance from Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE) to run a selection of short courses. Our ACFE courses provide supportive education and training for adults, with a particular focus on people who have had limited access to education, no or low level qualification and assists people in gaining the skills required for employment, further training or a career change. 2

Aim of this Position The key area of focus is to deliver the CERES Training curriculum to students and groups by providing practical experiential learning with an accredited or non accredited outcome in a safe and supportive learning environment. This position is an important part of the CERES Training Team and the CERES Community Food System. Employees in this role will be required To deliver the CERES Training curriculum to engage students and groups whilst allowing for flexibility and reasonable adjustment to suit the student s needs. To provide feedback about the Training curriculum to allow for continuous improvement. To provide the student with the training and practical experience in horticulture/hospitality while working towards Certificate II in Horticulture/Hospitality. To provide the student with the training and practical experience in either horticulture or hospitality whilst working towards an accredited pathway To promote and educate the students about sustainable farming and sustainable cooking practices To work within the CERES vision and strategic planning objectives To provide accredited training to students with mixed ability, social/physical and intellectual impairments and/or socio-economic disadvantage. This is to be done in collaboration with the VET Coordinator and Training Manager. This position reports directly to and is supervised by the VET Coordinator and works closely with the CERES Market Manager, CERES Market Gardener, CERES Propagation Coordinator, other CERES trainers and student groups, and other CERES staff as required. Staff Reviews and Area Reviews are held annually. B. Duties & Responsibilities 1. Develop training program in conjunction with Training Coordinator and/or Manager and deliver with consideration to: Identified needs of students/schools Identified needs and parameters of suitable on-site practical learning projects for students that support CERES Market and Farm ensuring collaborate relationships are maintained Current industry standards and practices Identified resource requirements CERES principles and aims CERES policies and procedures, including Student Handbook, Trainers Manual and course commencement orientation requirements. In addition, for the design and delivery of accredited programs consideration must be given to the relevant: Training Package requirements CERES Training and Assessment Strategy 3
4 CERES Trainer and Student Assessment Guides 2. Maintain all relevant course paperwork Attendance records Session plans In addition for accredited delivery ensure: Session plans include both training and assessment activities scheduled with sufficient time to complete prior to reporting deadlines Students are provided with unit lists and outlines of assessment requirements. Signed, dated original Assessment documentation is retained on each student s file (students may be provided with copies of assessment work if requested) Results summaries are completed in a timely manner 3. Ensure the well being and safety of all students Adhere to relevant Workplace Health and Safety policies and practices and carry out responsibilities in accordance with CERES OHS policy. Ensure that all students and accompanying staff are familiar with relevant WHS policies and practices and CERES OHS requirements including First Aid procedures and requirements, location of Fire extinguishers and Fire Hose and First Aid kits, use of appropriate PPE when undertaking practical activities and procedures for emergency evacuation. Ensure that students understand their rights and responsibilities and are familiar with CERES Code of Conduct 4. Ensure Training Co-ordinator/Manager are kept briefed of program and student progress and are aware of any issues. 5. Participate in any relevant meetings such as Training Team, one-on-one, Validation, Moderation or Review meetings as required and provide appropriate feedback to support CERES s program continuous improvement processes and goals. 6. Workplace Health, Safety & Wellbeing CERES is committed to providing a safe working environment, and enhancing the well-being of the CERES community. Staff and volunteers are responsible for each other's safety and wellbeing, including their own. They actively participate in WHS&W consultation processes, comply with safe work instructions or procedures, and identify and report hazards, incidents and 'near misses'. All Trainers conducting accredited training and completing assessment are required to have: a current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110/TAE40116) or a diploma or higher level qualification in adult education relevant industry qualifications and current experience directly related to the qualification of delivery (SIT20416 Certificate II in Kitchen Operations or AHC20416 Certificate II in Horticulture). Police Check D: Hours of Work and Salary This position is casual, hours still to be determined. (within Monday - Friday, 9am 5pm). This position is EM1CMF $31.50 per hour These rates are equivalent to $57,330 per annum, 5 days/week over 52 weeks, (pro rata) plus super and workcover.
