Details of Chapter activities since last report 1) Recruit new members We recruited new members in various ways. We advertised and introduced SPIE Student Club through the network and some posters. Many student joined our club for the various activities and conferences held by SPIE. This year we also have quite a few members, which proves that our chapter has certain effect on operating the club and many students want to join us to get to know the SPIE club and its conferences. 2) Held a dinner party to welcome the new members We gave the new members of our chapter a warm welcome by holding

5 a dinner party. During the dinner party, Professor Leng, the advisor of our chapter, recommended our chapter to the new members with a sense of humor. All students showed great interest. Then the new members were asked to introduce themselves to each other and the old members shared their experience afterwards. Everyone enjoyed their times. During the discussion, they were pleased to provide advices about the future activities planning and the management of the chapter. At last, the new officers are elected, and president Wang gave us a short conclusion. 3) Made new member cards We have made the name cards for the new members. 4) Attended the SPIE conference The last president of our chapter Ruirui Zhao attended the SPIE Student Chapter Leadership Workshop and the Optics & Photonics conference 2017 in San Diego, USA. She brought us new thoughts and ideas on the management of the chapter from the international conference, shared experience of various interesting optical games in the outreach exhibit, and built new relationships with several other chapters, such as Zhejiang university chapter of China and Jilin university chapter of China. 5) Outdoor activities In order to build a harmonic and relaxed atmosphere, we took a tour of Shanghai Maya Water Park, which is a great entertainment place in eastern China of the largest scale and highest level. We played more than 10 types

6 of water facilities together. All the members of our chapter had a good time and knew each other better. Meanwhile, we discussed the development of SPIE Student Club, everyone felt that our chapter is like a big family and loved the group. It is good for the expansion of our chapter. 6) Organized a lecture and a seminar in our institute We had organized a lecture named Fundamental and Applied Breakthrough in Optical Communications on December 26 th, The reporter was Prof. Dr. Yang Yue from Juniper Networks in USA. He talked the academic research on terabit-sacle fiber and free-space optical communications using orbital-angular-momentum multiplexing and the latest industrial development on packet-optical engine. Lots of SPIE members attended the lecture, and we felt it interesting and impressive. Then, Dr. Yue shared his experience on scientific research process and gave us many ideas on our research. Furthermore, Dr. Yue and our president visited the related laboratories and exchange ideas with some other professors. They all enjoyed themselves and harvested a lot. 7) Long-term volunteers in several primary schools Our club and another students club in our institute made a long-term deal to promote science through classroom teaching in Yuhong Primary School and General Elementary School in Jiading District. We went to school classroom and laboratory to teach pupils something related

7 optics and science every week, such as the Optical Fiber Communication, How to generate the laser. The interesting teaching and hands-on labs inspired the interest of students in developing the capacity of reasoning and logical thinking. Furthermore, our volunteers also achieved some new ideas on their research. 8) Volunteers on the 2017 Public Science day On the third week of May, knows as the National Science week, We welcomed primary students from five nearby elementary schools such as Qinghe Road Elementary School and other junior middle school students and some members of the communities who were interested in science. They were about 500 people. Our volunteers demonstrated a few interesting optical experiments with carefully pre-prepared instruments and equipment, took them around several representative laboratories in our institute like the State Key Laboratory of High Laser Physics, and told them lots of principles about basic physics and optics. All of us showed great enthusiasm and patience. Although some of them may not understand, we hope this kind of activity can help to fire up their curiosity, excitement, creativity, and intelligence in optics.
