Interfraternity Council The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the UC San Diego collegiate arm of the National Interfraternity Conference and is comprised of representatives from each member chapter on campus. The Council serves as the governing body for all traditional men s fraternities on campus. The 13 member groups in 2012 include: Alpha Epsilon Pi Jewish interest Delta Sigma Phi Kappa Sigma Lambda Chi Alpha Phi Gamma Delta Pi Kappa Alpha Sigma Alpha Epsilon* Sigma Alpha Mu Sigma Chi Sigma Nu Sigma Phi Epsilon Tau Kappa Epsilon Triangle * indicates new in 2012 Multicultural Greek Council The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) is the governing body for all culturalinterest fraternities and sororities on campus. Provisional members do not have voting rights until officially chartered by their inter/national organizations and may not recruit using their Greek names. Panhellenic Association The Panhellenic Association (PHC) is the UCSD collegiate arm of the National Panehellenic Conference and is comprised of representatives from each member chapter on campus. The Council serves as the governing body for all traditional women s fraternities and sororities on campus. The nine member groups in 2012 include: Alpha Chi Omega Alpha Epsilon Phi Chi Omega Delta Delta Delta Delta Gamma Kappa Alpha Theta Kappa Kappa Gamma Pi Beta Phi Sigma Kappa The UCSD Panhellenic Council also hosts an associate member, Phi Sigma Rho, and sorority exclusive to engineering majors who is not a part of the National Panhellenic Conference, but does have multiple chapters nation-wide. Associate chapters do not participate in formal recruitment or have voting rights. Council Achievements & Collaboration Councils facilitate new member recruitments, special events, campus wide initiatives, and judicial processes as individual bodies and as a collaborative Greek community. The emphasis in 2012 was cross-council collaboration Notable achievements include: Ø For the first time in school history Greek Awards embodied all three Councils, with the new inclusion of the MGC. Attendees were treated to a step routine by Lambda Theta Nu sorority. Ø All councils reviewed and revised their governing documents to update election procedures, expectations, and judicial procedures leading to more efficient and productive operations, transparency, and purpose. Ø All councils increased the frequency of meetings from bi-weekly to weekly. 3

4 Ø More than 600 new members joined the Greek community in 2012, the largest new member class since Ø IFC restructured their recruitment process to include a mandatory openhouse contributing to record-size new member groups Ø IFC colony Sigma Alpha Epsilon was re-chartered on campus and officially granted full-member status. Ø The Panhellenic Association registered over 530 women for Fall Formal Recruitment and raised their chapter membership totals (cap) from 85 to 95. Ø MGC created a position of Risk Manager. Ø The Panhellenic Association created a Recruitment & Retention Committee to analyze membership trends and review the sustainability of bringing another NPC sorority to campus. Ø Greek Week was moved to Fall quarter, leading to higher participation from new members. Ø Greek Week 2012 raised more than $2000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of San Diego s summer camp program. Ø Greeks hosted a special event at Triton Day (formerly Admit Day). Over 1000 current students and admitted hopefuls enjoyed a dance party, barbeque, and treats. Ø The 21 st Annual Excel Leadership Conference was a huge success, featuring speakers on values, diversity, and authentic character development. Over 550 students attended. Ø All councils assisted in the planning of Triton Day 2012, by planning the Student Life Social Hour over 300 current students, prospective students and families attended this school spirited event. Expansion Each respective council features its own specific requirements and processes for including a fraternity or sorority. Interested organizations should contact the Greek Life Advisor at greeklife@ucsd.edu to begin. Greek Auxiliary Groups Order of Omega Order of Omega is a leadership honor society exclusive open to members of Greek organizations. Order of Omega recognizes juniors and seniors who have exemplified high standards in the areas of scholarship, leadership, and involvement within their respective organization and within the Greek, campus, and local community. Membership is limited to the top 10% of students within the Greek community. Order of Omega has representation from all three Greek Councils. Relationship & Requirements 4

5 Campus Recognition, Standards and Conduct All Greek Life organizations are required to register annually with the Center for Student Involvement (CSI). Registered Student Organization (RSO) status confers the same privileges and requirements on fraternal organizations as other student organizations. Privileges include reserving space on campus, applying for funding, leadership programs, poster room access, access to advisors, advertising on campus, etc. Greek organizations have additional requirements for recognition which include: providing proof of insurance, participation in a governing Council, reporting grades quarterly, and participating in the Greek Recognition of Achievement and Excellence (REACH) program. Responsibilities of all RSOs, including Greek organizations include adherence to the UCSD Principles of Community and the Student Conduct Code. Detailed information on registering with CSI can be found at Greek Life Advisor s Relationship with Greek Organizations Located on the 3 rd floor of Price Center, The Center for Student Involvement currently employs one Greek Life Advisor and one graduate assistant (8 hours a week). The Greek Life staff works year-round with organizations and individuals to: Provide management, oversight and direction for the Greek Life community. Offer leadership and advising on issues unique to the Greek community, on-campus Greek programming, and risk and liability management. Develop and interpret on all University administrative policy. 8 Facts & Figures Recognition of Excellence & Achievement (REACH) In 2012 Greek Life Staff created the REACH Program. Modeled after other University of California campuses and inter/national performance reviews, this program was designed to: - Create truth in advertising and provide a consumer report and transparency by o Developing a set of minimum performance standards for all affiliated chapters. The recognition standards defined for each area are specific, measurable and attainable by chapters of all sizes. o Recommend action and plan of improvement if a chapter fails to attain the minimum standards o Provide campus resources o Encourage growth and development o Reward strong performance The UCSD Greek REACH program serves to assist both individual chapters and the overall Greek community in functioning at the most effective and efficient levels possible. The program also intends to help provide a balanced experience for individual members. REACH is intended to supplement national/international chapter standards and in no way replaces or undermines individual chapter requirements. The REACH program received outstanding reviews by the National Panhellenic Conference and is now used as a model for other campuses nation-wide. Chapters are scored in the following categories: Scholastic Achievement Responsible Citizenship (community service) Philanthropic Giving/Causes Responsible Leadership (chapter behavior and presence) Organizational Operation Values and Ethics Integration (values based programming) Membership Recruitment & Retention Campus Involvement Scoring is on a 100-point scale. Chapters are expected to earn a 70 or better. Chapters falling below a 70 are required to work with the Greek Life Advisor on an improvement plan. A chapter is expected to meet or exceed the Gamma (baseline) level and score in all of the standards outlined. Chapters that fail to attain this recognition level shall be required to develop a written plan for improvement with the Greek Life Advisor. REACH is the basis for the Greek 8

9 Awards system. A rubric can be found at or by request by ing greeklife@ucsd.edu. REACH Results The 2012 report yielded the following: 12 Alpha Level ( points) 5 Beta Level (80-89 points) 7 Gamma Level (70-79 points) 8 Did not qualify 8 Did not participate Quantitative data is provided below: Scholastic Achievement Cumulative GPA totals for Greek Life IFC MGC PHC All Men s All All Greek Women s Responsible Citizenship (community service) Verified hours of community service. Values and Ethics Integration (values based programming) - Total chapter hosted (separate from Greek Life Office) programming by category for 2012 Leadership/Personal Health Academic Total Development Membership Recruitment & Retention The following numbers show the councils at their largest in IFC MGC PHC Total This year, 2012, Greek Life saw a renewed interest. Over 600 new members joined, making this year s new member class the largest since Campus Involvement The average Greek student is involved in 1.5 other student organizations. It is estimated that there are over 250 unique organizations in which fraternity and sorority members participate in on campus. Getting Connected - Online Greek Life at UCSD hosts several online information sites. The Center for Student Involvement homepage continues to be the official source for Greek Life information on campus Unfortunately, information is not easily accessible as it is being remodeled. As a result the Greek Life staff rely heavily on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Facebook likes on the UCSD Greek Life page increased from 340 to 830. In addition a Twitter feed was created. There are currently 143 followers on Twitter. The student leadership also created a brand new webpage that is the landing site for all three councils. The site is strictly student operated. Campus Partners Fraternity and Sorority Life on campus continues to enjoy success and grow largely in thanks to productive partnerships on campus. Special thanks are owed to Student Health Services, Student Legal Services, Office of Student Conduct, Triton Athletics, UCSD Alumni Association, Associated Students, Sexual Assault 10
