4 Welcome! The courses in this brochure are completely free and accessible, and are available to all Calico customers and anyone living in our neighbourhoods. They have been selected to help you develop your skills and knowledge, improve your employment opportunities, and get more out of life. All courses provide a certificate, and some are accredited with nationally recognised qualifications. You will also get to meet new people, share experiences, and build your confidence. As part of your registration, we will also see whether our Calico Careers Service will be of benefit to you. If you need help with transport or have any other concerns, just ask and we ll see how we can help. 5 Community Volunteering Qualification Anyone keen to volunteer with Calico and gain new skills, increase their knowledge of volunteering issues, and develop their potential The course is unit delivered, covering subjects such as communication skills, customer care, understanding what volunteering is about, and personal development. You will complete the course whilst volunteering to get both learning and practical experience. Starting February, and runs for 14 weeks (please enquire for full list of dates). You will need to be able to commit to the full 14 week course. Maximum number of participants 12 Calico Head Office, Centenary Way, Croft Street, Burnley. Brad Phillips, who attended the course, said: The volunteer course was excellent. Not only did we learn, we had fun too. 6 CV Job Applications & CVs Anyone looking to improve their skills in applying for jobs. What is wanted from an application form or CV. How to write an outstanding CV, covering letter and job application. Targeting the right jobs for you. Transferable skills. Getting it right! 7 Basic Cookery Anybody who likes to have fun learning cooking skills. Six weekly cooking sessions where you can learn new skills and make tasty, healthy food on a budget. Develop your confidence and creativity in the kitchen, so you can try new, interesting meals at home. Thursday 12th February, 2:00pm-4:00pm. You will need to be able to commit to the full six week course. Maximum number of participants 12 Elizabeth Street Project, Burnley. 8 Changes to Benefits Anyone receiving benefits, who wants to learn more about the changes to the benefit system, how they will affect you, and what support is available. The course will help you learn about the welfare reform changes, including Universal Credit and benefit changes. Find out what you can do to help yourself and others around you prepare for the changes. 9 Interview Techniques Anyone who wants to improve their confidence and effectiveness in an interview situation. Preparation for interviews. Questions interviewers may ask and how to answer them. Transferable skills. Tips to improve confidence in an interview situation. 10 Warehousing & Storage Principles L1 Anyone who is interested in working within the logistics sector, particularly in a warehouse environment. You will learn the knowledge required to be able to store and receive goods appropriately, as well as exploring how to process and dispatch orders. Key health and safety legislation is also covered in this session. 23rd February, 2nd March and 9th March 2015, 9:30am 3:30pm You will need to be able to commit to the three day course. 11 Drugs & Alcohol Awareness Who is it for This is for anyone who wants to understand more about addiction and people who have issues with drugs and alcohol. You will look at a range of factors relating to alcohol addiction and substance abuse, learn about the symptoms and consequences, and find out more about the support available. 12 Calico Academy Mainly Calico customers, but anyone interested in learning more about Calico as an organisation, or how social housing works, is welcome. It s a great opportunity to get to know new people in an easy-learning environment. It gives you a good understanding of how housing services work, which may help you get involved with us or increase your employment prospects. Past participants have learned lots of other new skills and developed their self-confidence. Wednesday 15th April 2015 You will need to be able to commit to the full 13 week course. 13 PDA Personal Development Award L1 Anyone who wants to gain the skills to live independently, develop their self-awareness and increase their confidence. You will learn about self-development, assertiveness, rights and responsibilities, and how to manage time and money effectively. The course also covers healthy living, cultural diversity and career development. Monday 20th April 2015, 9:30am 12:30pm You will need to be able to commit to the full 10 week course. 14 ID card Customer Service L2 Anyone who wants to pursue a career in customer service, or any career where excellent customer service is important. You will learn about aspects of effective customer service, alongside information about improving job prospects in this area of work. Friday 24th April 2015, 9:30am 3.00pm You will need to be able to commit to the full five week course. 15 ! Construction Health & Safety Course, including CSCS Card This course is ideal for anyone who is interested in a career in construction. It is becoming a mandatory requirement for everyone working in construction to have successfully passed the CSCS Health & Safety Test. This course will provide you with the knowledge and opportunity to successfully pass your CSCS Health & Safety Test. The course will cover site and personal safety, warning signs, first aid, and risks related to the construction sector. At the end of the week, you will take the actual CSCS Health & Safety Test. In order to work in construction, you need to pass this test. Progression There are a number of opportunities for progressing onto a full apprenticeship with Calico, either through our successful Constructing the Future initiative, which has created over 130 apprenticeships, or through Ring Stones, our construction company. Tuesday 21st April, 9:30am 4:00pm This is a five week course, with a final test day on Monday 18th May at Accrington and Rossendale College. Transport will be provided. 16 Retail Knowledge L1 Anyone who is looking for work in the retail sector or would like to change their career. You will learn about the retail sector and explore the principles of retail through a range of units. This will give you a better understanding of the retail sector. Tuesday 2nd June, 9:30am 3:00pm You will need to be able to commit to the full five week course. 17 www. Basic IT/ Learn My Way Anyone not confident about using computers or accessing the internet, even if you ve never even switched one on before! Particularly important if you re claiming benefits which are moving to Universal Credit, as all claims will have to be made online. Online basics, showing you how to use a mouse and keyboard, , and online search, and how to stay safe online, ensuring you have the confidence and skills needed to start enjoying all the fantastic things the internet has to offer. Every Monday-Friday, 9:00am 3:30pm (drop-in session) or Monday am and Thursday pm (Learn My Way). Maximum number of participants The drop-ins are individual sessions. Learn My Way is by appointment and you will need to book for this with Burnley Central Library by calling Burnley Switch, 16 Keirby Walk, Burnley (drop-in session) or Burnley Central Library (Learn My Way). 18 Our training providers All our training providers are very welcoming and offer a professional but informal approach to learning. Many of the courses are delivered by Calico staff, who have many years experience in their area of work. We have links with local colleges that can offer accredited training. We also work with other small independent trainers to help deliver our training programme. Our partners in this programme Calico Enterprise Calico Enterprise provides a range of initiatives aimed at supporting people into apprenticeships. Working with local partners across the North West, our nationally recognised Constructing the Future Lancashire initiative has created over 80 construction apprenticeships, with many of our successful apprentices going on to secure permanent employment.
