1 FOr CArers Carer Support News Bulletin June 2016 This information bulletin is for carers, professionals working with carers and other organisations supporting carers. The Carer Support Team supports informal carers in Wolverhampton. The carer might be looking after someone with a physical or sensory disability, mental health need, learning disability; they may be an older frail person or the parent/carer of a child with a disability. 5 Autism Central 2016 Autism Central 2016 will take place on 11th October at Aston Villa Football Club. The event, now in its sixth year, will showcase what support and services are available to those on the Autistic spectrum, their families and professionals who support them. The event is FREE to attend and also features a number of FREE seminars throughout the day. POhWER Advocacy POhWER now provide the Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA) and Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) in Wolverhampton. So what do these services mean? Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA) is for anyone who has been deemed to lack capacity in relation to serious medical treatment or a change of their accommodation and they have no other family or friends to support them. An Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA) provides a confidential service for patients subject to the Mental Health Act 1983, either in hospital or in the community, helping them to understand and exercise their rights and to be involved in decisions about their care and treatment. 6 Have your say about Health and Social Care Services in Wolverhampton Wolverhampton CCG have been hosting a number of Commissioning Intention Events to discuss how health services can best meet the needs of local residents. It is an opportunity to find out how health services are doing in Wolverhampton and to share your thoughts on what works well and what could be improved. Your comments and suggestions will help shape service planning for 2017/18. Come and join local patients and service users, representatives of community and voluntary sector groups, health and social care providers as well as commissioners and decision makers from the local NHS and the Local Authority. 8 Mental wellbeing needs assessment The City of Wolverhampton Council Public Health and Wellbeing team is funding a project to carry out a comprehensive mental wellbeing needs assessment for adults in the city. This is because good mental health is fundamental to an individual s ability to achieve their full potential and achieving a good quality of life, but our knowledge locally regarding mental wellbeing requires further attention. We are not specifically looking at mental health services, but are focussing on prevention and early intervention and opportunities to promote good mental health amongst the general population. Many of the factors that underpin good mental wellbeing are linked to services that provide for basic needs for example housing, work, environment, or support people when they are in need. Many of the issues that put people at risk of poor mental health are linked to the major themes in the council and its partners, for example reducing social isolation, promoting employment opportunities, safer communities and healthy lifestyles. As part of this project, we have commissioned Engaging Communities Staffordshire to undertake a series of interviews with key groups and stakeholders who work with people who may be at risk of poor mental wellbeing. We are sending you this because we would like you to take part in this valuable research. Engaging Communities will be contacting you by telephone to arrange a 30 minute interview that can be conducted either face-to-face or via telephone depending on your preference. These interviews are part of a wider piece of work and a briefing on this which provides more detail is attached. 9 Wolverhampton Special Care Dental Service The Wolverhampton Special Care Dental Service (WSCDS) is a unique service that provides dental care and treatment for special care patients including vulnerable and hard-to-reach groups in the area. We provide comprehensive NHS dental care for individuals living in Wolverhampton or who have a Wolverhampton GP, who may have difficulty obtaining such care in general dental services. Our service user groups include Children and Adults: with severe learning disabilities with severe autistic spectrum disorders with physical disabilities and wheelchair-users who have severe Mental Health Problems with dental phobia who are engaging in substance misuse from socially excluded groups (eg. asylum, homelessness) elderly and frail adults residing in care homes looked after children children with high treatment needs who are difficult to manage. This service is provided from 3 clinics, Pendeford Health Centre, Phoenix Health Centre and Pennfields Health Centre, as well as a Mobile Dental Unit. We also provide domiciliary services for individuals who are housebound or cannot access general dental services and meet our service criteria. 11 Exercises for older people - keeping active into older age is the key to staying fit, mobile and independent. This NHS guide provides step-by-step instructions for exercises focusing on strength, flexibility and balance, with a set of sitting exercises to get you started. Me & You Project Summer The Albrighton Trust are looking for young people aged 15 to 25 with disabilities and special needs to take part in their outdoor activity programme throughout the Summer. They currently have spaces on their June Programme commencing on the 9 th of June and their Summer Holiday Programme commencing on the 28 th of July. The Me & You project has been funded by the Big Lottery in order to address the lack of opportunities for young disabled people during their transition years and to help them explore their options for the future. The six week programme is designed to build confidence and self-esteem through participation in outdoor practical activities based around horticulture, conservation & wildlife and angling. Throughout the programme participants have the opportunity to learn new skills, discover new interests and spend time outdoors in the natural environment of the Albrighton Moat and Gardens. It is hoped that during this initial six week stage the young people taking part will discover a new interest or passion which they can then choose, with the support of the Me & You team, to develop further.
