1 Cancer

2 CANCER Cancer is a condition where cells in a specific part of the body grow and reproduce uncontrollably. The cancerous cells can invade and destroy surrounding healthy tissue, including organs. Cancer sometimes begins in one part of the body before spreading to other areas. This process is known as metastasis. There are over 200 different types of cancer, each with its own methods of diagnosis and treatment. SUPPORT SERVICES Palliative Care Palliative Care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems; physical, psychosocial and spiritual. Palliative Care for adults: Page 2 Provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms

3 Affirms life and regards dying as a normal process Intends neither to hasten or postpone death Integrates the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care Offers a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death Offers a support system to help the family cope during the patient s illness and in their own bereavement Uses a team approach to address the needs of patients and their families, including bereavement counselling, if indicated Will enhance quality of life, and may also positively influence the course of an illness Is applicable early in the course of illness, in conjunction with other therapies that are intended to prolong life, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and includes those investigations needed to better understand and manage distressing clinical complications Palliative Care for Children: Palliative care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions is an active and total approach to care, embracing physical, emotional, social and spiritual Page 3

4 elements. It focuses on enhancements of quality of life for the child and support for the family and includes the management of distressing symptoms, provision of respite and care through death and bereavement. Lotus Lymphoedema Support Group Tel: (Gill) Lotus Lymphoedema Support Group is for sufferers of Lymphoedema following breast cancer. The group meets on a Friday of alternate months 11.30am-1.30pm at the Genesis Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital. Beechwood Cancer Care Centre Tel: enquire@beechwoodcancercare.co.uk Website: Beechwood is a day centre that helps anyone whose life has been affected by the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. They offer a range of free support, including one-to-one talk time, complementary therapies and group sessions to help patients, family members and carers cope with all the problems they may have to face. 5 wishing to use the services must make an appointment to visit the Centre and be seen (on an individual basis) by one of their trained members of staff. You may refer yourself by contacting the Centre directly. Patients may also be referred by their GP/Macmillan nurse or any other health professional. Macmillan Cancer Support Tel: Website: Helpline for anyone affected by cancer, their families, friends, professionals. Provides emotional support, advice and information on benefits, possible grants, other organisations and general information. Macmillan nurses are also available to offer practical support and advice. Trafford Macmillan Care Centre Tel: The Centre offers day therapy, information and support for people with cancer and other similar serious illnesses, their families and carers, who live in the Trafford and Salford area. 6 A team of healthcare professionals and trained volunteers offer a variety of one-to-one therapies and support including counselling and free complementary therapies. A wide range of information is offered from the new drop-in information centre. There are several other groups that meet at the Centre: AIRWAVES: a support group for people with lung, heart and other related health problems. All their services are free. Prostate Cancer Charity Helpline: info@prostate-cancer.org.uk Website: They provide support, information and fund research surrounding prostate cancer. Additionally they provide free information leaflets and a nationwide network of support contacts for men diagnosed with prostate cancer. Information available in English, Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Gujarati, Hindi, Italian, Punjabi and Urdu. Local rate helpline runs between 10.00am- 4.00pm Monday to Friday and 7.00pm-9.00pm on Wednesdays. Page 7

8 Specialist Nurses answer questions about the disease and treatment and discuss any concerns about prostate cancer. Cancer Aid Listening Line (CALL) The Macmillan Care Centre, Moorside Road, Davyhulme M41 5SN Tel: Helpline: Monday to Friday 9.00am-4.00pm and Saturday to Sunday 7.30pm-10.30pm Website: / beingthere.org.uk/ trafford@beingthere.org.uk Provides support to anyone affected by cancer. Can offer home-based practical help including befriending, respite sitting and driving, as well as support groups. A social group meets in Sale on alternate Tuesdays from 2.00pm- 4.00pm at the Salvation army hall. St.Ann s Hospice General Enquiries: Provides palliative care for those who have progressive or life threatening illnesses. It offers support for their carers Page 8

9 and families. Services include bereavement support at the hospice or at home. Offers in-patient services, day therapy, and community services. To access most services, a referral is needed from a Consultant, GP or Palliative Care Nurse. Salford and Trafford Respite Palliative Home Care Teams Tel: Provide care in patient s own homes by nurses and nursing assistants. They provide support to help to reduce the strain of coping with the pressures of the caring role. To access the services, a referral is needed from a GP, district nurse or palliative care nurse. Neil Cliffe Cancer Care Centre Tel: Website: St Ann s Hospice, Wythenshawe Hospital, Southmoor Road, Wythenshawe M23 9LT Operates an outreach complementary therapy service in central Manchester, providing support to people with cancer, their families and carers. 10 programme of support is offered which may include: Complementary therapies Occupational therapy Counselling Physiotherapy Fatigue management Dietetic service Bereavement support Relaxation group Spiritual support BASIC Tel: Eccles New Road, Salford M5 5AP This is a centre in Eccles that provides specialist resources for people who have suffered brain injuries and neurological diagnosis including brain cancers. The Centre offers information, education, emotional support, advice, social activities as well as other services. Contact for more information. Young and Positive Tel: Page 10

11 This is a support group for young women who have been diagnosed with secondary cancer. The aim of the group is to reduce feelings of isolation, support, learning from others experiences, sharing information and having fun. The group meets at the Christie Information Centre on the first Friday of the month at 1.00pm-2.00pm. The sessions are also supported by a counsellor and a Macmillan nurse. The Christie Charity Tel: The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Wilmslow Road, Manchester M20 4BX The charity is one of Europe s leading cancer centres, treating over 40,000 patients a year. It has one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world, chemotherapy on site and offers a wide range of support and diagnostic services. Additionally through 14 other hospitals it provides highly specialised surgery for complex and rare cancers. To be seen at the hospital you must be referred by a GP or through a hospital consultant. The hospital also provides a drop in centre that provides information, practical advice and support. Page 11

12 Its opening times are Monday to Friday 9.00am-4.00pm. There is also a specialist nurse to answer any questions and provide emotional support. For further information contact Other services at the Centre include an art and crafts centre, spiritual and palliative care and counselling services. They also offer complementary therapies such as massage and relaxation techniques. These are only available to inpatients, their carers and patients that are visiting the centre everyday for treatment. Additionally there is a service that provides advice for patients that are experiencing hair loss due to treatment and advice on skincare and make-up. Cancer Research UK Tel: Cancer Research UK provide reliable and accessible information about cancer and the care available. They also offer a free e-newsletter that covers issues of interest to people affected by cancer. Page 12

13 Marie Curie Cancer Care Marie Curie Cancer Centre, 89 Albert Embankment, London SE1 7TP Tel: Website: Provide care for people with cancer and people with other life limiting illnesses. They provide nurses that work in the community providing practical and emotional support to carers and families. They work through day or night to provide care for patients who wish to be in the comfort and familiar surroundings of their own home. They also offer specialist care in their hospices providing support in a relaxed, friendly and comfortable environment. The hospices also provide day services for patients who wish to visit rather than stay. They can attend health clinics, social activities, practical advice and support and provide complementary therapies such as massage and aromatherapy. Some hospices also offer respite care which is a short-term arrangement which allows carer s to have a break from their role. You will need a referral from a GP or hospital doctor to access the hospice services. Page 13

It can be accessed through the Help the Hospices website or you can call the enquiry line. Sue Ryder Care Tel: Health Care Line: Website: Runs care centres in the UK for patients with many different diseases and disabilities. Services they offer include long-term care, respite care, rehabilitation and day care. Cancer Buddy Network Page 14

15 Website: This is an online support network for anyone affected by cancer. It links individuals together to promote support and friendship. You can chat both privately or through an online forum. The site is supported by Macmillan and is completely safe and easy to use. The service is free, all you have to do is register. Fitness League Tel: (Lynne Berry) Provide exercise classes that are approved by Breast Cancer Care, which aim to improve core stability, mobilise joints, stretch and relax. Meeting details - Larkhill Centre, Timperley - Tuesdays 1.30pm-2.45pm Timperley Village Hall - Wednesdays 10.00am St Peters Assembly Rooms, Hale -Thursday 7.30pm- 9.00pm There is a yearly fee of 20 and additional weekly fees that vary. 16 This is a scheme where you can claim back public transport costs if you are claiming income support, income based job seekers allowance, guarantee credit or pension credit. For more information speak to your hospital or call Macmillan on (lines open Monday to Friday 9.00am-8.00pm). NHS Low Income Scheme A scheme where you may be able to claim back some costs of travel if you have capital of under 8,000 or if you are over 60 and have capital of under 12,000. For a NHS low income scheme form call Francis House Tel: Parrswood, Didsbury, Manchester, M20 5NA Website: This hospice in south Manchester is for children who have been diagnosed with a life threatening illness or life limiting condition and are under the age of sixteen. Care is given free of charge regardless of faith or cultural background. They provide a home care team that can offer a break for carers. They also provide day care where children and families can use the facilities during the day or go on trips that the hospice organise. Page 16

17 Respite is also available to give carers and children a rest from their normal routine. Living with Secondary Cancer SECA: a support group for women with secondary cancer. Meetings are held every three weeks at the Manchester Buddhist centre on Thursdays 11.00am-1.30pm. Page 17
