4 Nightstop has helped me immeasurably, helping me reach a simple goal that potentially could have been so out of reach.

5 What do we do? Bristol Nightstop (BNS) works with year olds who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. We offer a short term accommodation service for anyone over 18 whilst assisting all young people to access longer term more secure housing. We also provide a key working service helping with a variety of issues such as benefits, physical or mental health, education and training. BNS has developed an extensive range of partnerships both within and outside Bristol and our focus is always on building a positive and stable future for each and every one of the young people referred to us. We will work with you from day one for as long as it takes. How it works Accommodation is provided in family homes by a diverse group of volunteers. Every young person has a room of their own and a safe, secure environment. An evening meal, breakfast and washing facilities are also provided. We offer both short term and longer term stays, if required, and our hosts are in a variety of locations both within Bristol and out in the countryside. A host will offer a compassionate, listening ear or respect your space if you wish to be on your own. Our hosts are vetted and accommodation is checked as to its suitability. They also attend regular training in areas such as boundaries, confidentiality, mental health and housing. Darren s story I was homeless for about 2 months. I have slept under a bridge and in a tiny shed for some weeks. I then found out about this organisation called Nightstop. I tried everywhere in Bristol to get some help being housed, it appeared that Nightstop was the only place that would actually help prevent me from sleeping rough. I ve never met people so kind and caring in my life. If it wasn t for Nightstop and kind volunteers I would still be on the streets now.

6 We engage with people in Bristol who want to make a difference in our city and ensure that we develop and create opportunities for volunteering all year round. We focus on sustaining and improving our provision for homeless people through our Shelter and Nightstop projects. We collaborate with other agencies to create services, projects and resources which tackle the causes of homelessness and raise awareness of homelessness and vulnerability in our city. We develop research to raise awareness and support the expansion of emergency accommodation for young people. Talks Caring in Bristol Talks provide an opportunity for discussion and for the development of new ideas to improve the lives of vulnerable and homeless people in Bristol. 7 Speakers Professor Kate Moss, LLB(Hons), MPhil (Cantab), PhD Professor of Criminal Justice Central Institute for the Study of Public Protection Faculty of Social Sciences University of Wolverhampton Key Areas of Interest: Homelessness, Human Rights & Social Policy Besides my academic interest in these themes, the nature of my research has also lent itself to the practical application of ideas and theories. I have also undertaken what might be called applied research because it has the potential to change people s lives and to drive policy for the improvement of society. My recommendations from the applied research I have carried out have fed into Home Office policies and to the work of other criminal justice agencies and practitioners. In the recent past I have provided policy inputs to the Home Office both regionally and nationally crime reduction consultancy for the Policing and Reducing Crime Unit at the Home Office and for the National Police Training Units (now Centrex) at Bramshill and Easingwold. I was Legal Advisor for a joint Home Office and ESRC funded study into attrition rates in child abuse cases and have provided crime and disorder training on a consultancy basis for police forces and Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships nationally in England and Wales. I have been commissioned to undertake work for the Home Office in relation to information sharing systems and the reduction of crime and was seconded to the regional Home Office in Nottingham for two days a week during This was at the specific request of the Home Office Crime Reduction Director and as a result of my expertise in relation to this area. I was then requested to continue my association with the regional Home Office on a consultancy basis in order to draw up a burglary risk index. For the past 4 years I have been leading on 3 major European Projects on behalf of the European Commission including: Moss, K. Singh, P. ( ) Empowering Women Rough Sleepers to protect themselves from Violence on the Streets. Moss, K. Singh, P. ( ) Runaway and Homeless Children who Sleep Rough. Moss, K. Singh, P. & Williams, K. ( ) Women Rough Sleepers in Europe. Matt Dowse Matt is the Charity Development Lead at Caring in Bristol. He has previously worked for Connexions West of England, Bristol City Council School Improvement and Inclusion Services, Bournemouth and Poole Youth Offending Team as well as teaching at schools in London and Bristol.

8 Guest Speakers Katy Molloy is the Children's project manager at Unseen, a Bristol based charity working on a national and local level towards a world without slavery and providing victims with safety, hope and choice. She is managing the development of a care and accommodation service for trafficked children which is due to open in She previously worked internationally in counter human trafficking for organisations based in Southeast Asia. Jennifer Harris is a final year PhD researcher and assistant teacher at the University of Bristol. Her PhD forms part of a wider research programme within the School of Law exploring the ways advice-giving organisations affect people s experience and understanding of the law. For her research, Jennifer has been working with four local organisations (including Bristol Nightstop) to explore homeless people s access and engagement with advice and other services, with an additional focus on the political shift to digital advice and legal service provision. Jennifer s interest in this project stems from her previous employment in various related fields, e.g., as a housing officer, a researcher on a Hidden Homelessness project, a volunteer at Citizen s Advice Bureau, and as a volunteer at the Caring at Christmas Shelter. Jess Anstey and Katie White are Housing Solicitors working at the Avon & Bristol Law Centre. Jess and Katie deal with all areas of housing law including possession proceedings, anti-social behaviour and disrepair, with a particular interest in homeless cases involving vulnerable individuals Lígia Teixeira is Head of Research and Evaluation at Crisis. She has worked in research roles for over 15 years and joined Crisis in March 2008 after completing a PhD at the London School of Economics. Her team at Crisis is responsible for evaluating Crisis performance as a service provider and as a campaigning organisation as well as for conducting research (in-house or commissioned) on the nature and causes of housing and homelessness issues.
