3 YoungMinds is the UK s leading charity fighting for a future where all young minds are supported and empowered, whatever the challenges. We re here to make sure they get the best possible mental health support and have the resilience to overcome life s difficulties. The crisis in children and young people s mental health is real and it is urgent. More children and young people than ever before are reaching out for help with their mental health. But for those who take that brave step, help is much too hard to find. Together, we are changing this. We re fighting for young people s mental health. Join our fight. Our goals To keep ourselves focused and on track, we ve set out four key strategic aims: 1. Foster innovation to meet the needs of vulnerable and excluded children and young people. 2. Promote good mental health to more children and young people than ever before. 3. Champion the voices of young people and parents to influence mental health policy and practice. 4. Inspire excellence to achieve transformed, integrated services. When our daughter was admitted to hospital under section, a call from your Professional Adviser kept me going and I still remember and replay her words, as times are still difficult. They will stay with me forever. I cannot express how much I needed your help that you gave. Thank you. Who we are Who we are
4 Children and young people with mental health problems are at the heart of everything we do. From our free online resources to our innovative youth engagement programmes, we transform the lives of children and young people. We support families No one should suffer alone. YoungMinds provides a lifeline to thousands of families, advising and supporting them to understand their child s behaviour and secure the right help. We campaign for change We break the silence surrounding mental health by speaking out to change attitudes and policies. Driven by the experiences of young people, we campaign to build a society where mental health has no attached stigma and where those suffering get fast, effective support. We help professionals Many professionals tell us they don t have the knowledge and training to understand how young people are feeling, spot problems or help if needed. Our training and consultancy work helps schools and professionals make a real difference to young people s mental health. 10 Supporting Statement This is an opportunity to highlight in greater detail why you are suitable for the role. 14 Hear what our volunteers have to say Volunteering for YoungMinds gives me an enormous sense of pride. This fantastically meaningful, well-run, generous spirited organisation offers a lifeline to many parents who are struggling to cope with their child s mental health. YoungMinds is one of the greatest champions of child and adolescent mental health, delivering a lifeline of support to many parents who are struggling to know where to turn. Being part of this team gives me a sense of value and purpose. To play a small role in helping parents deal with the enormous pressure that caring for a child with poor mental health places on the whole family is extremely rewarding. The comprehensive training that YoungMinds provides their volunteers, places us in a competent and confident position to help the numerous parents that we speak to. With such a happy and vibrant team to be part of my day volunteering at YoungMinds leaves me feeling valued and appreciated with the knowledge that I have offered something to others too. Hattie In the two years I ve volunteered on the Parents Helpline for Young Minds I feel I ve made a real difference to people s lives. Sometimes we re the first time a parent has talked about their child s mental health problems and it can be a distressing call for them. By listening, offering reassurance and advice I feel they re in a much better place than before the call. All the volunteers bring different skills and expertise to the table and that s what makes the Helpline so special, as well as working alongside an amazing staff team. I feel very supported by everyone here... Young Minds treat their volunteers so incredibly well which makes working here a real pleasure! Thank you! Philippa
