IMPACT REPORT & ANNUAL REVIEW 2015

Dr Nigel Brown OBE, Chairman In the last year the charity has, yet again, made a considerable difference to the lives of many people in the worst possible medical emergencies, while raising its profile as a trailblazer in providing advanced care away from hospital. Another 9 doctors trained with us in 2015 to become only a handful of the country s qualified specialists in pre-hospital emergency medicine. This achievement was only possible with the help of our pioneering senior clinicians, whose efforts have led to the official accreditation of this subspecialty of emergency medicine. I have a huge sense of pride in all of our clinical staff, who have demonstrated that our service brings the very best care to patients in need of expert help. In this impact report you ll hear from three patients who benefited greatly from the specialist skills of our doctors and paramedics. Without the enhanced level of care they received, their recovery and the lasting impact of their injuries could have been very different. My thanks go to our medical team for demonstrating excellence in patient care and in the field of pre-hospital emergency medicine. 1
Daryl Brown, Chief Executive In 2016 Magpas Air Ambulance celebrates its 45th anniversary. Our founders, Dr Neville Silverston MBE and Dr Derek Cracknell MBE, could never have imagined that their desire to save lives at the roadside would have such a huge impact 45 years later. I am immensely proud to say that today we have given enhanced care to some 63,000 people in critical need of our help. Since 1971 our charity has pioneered improvements in patient care out of hospital for people facing serious medical emergencies. From the inception of family GPs bringing medical care in their own cars, to in 2000 becoming the first charity nationally to train community first responders. In 2014 we became the first accredited pre-hospital emergency medicine (PHEM) training scheme anywhere in the country. Doctors from across the UK now come to Magpas Air Ambulance to qualify as specialists in giving urgent, enhanced care out of hospital. Finally, in 2015 we became the first service in the region to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, meaning we can now bring advanced care whenever it s needed, in the East of England and beyond. As the first charity to offer round-the-clock care in the region, we have already seen a 16% increase in the number of incidents our highly trained medical team are called to. 2
Needless to say, this greater demand requires us to grow our fundraising efforts which continued to be very successful in An enormous thank you to our supporters, fundraisers, volunteers, corporate sponsors, the Royal Air Force, our Trustees, staff, and of course the very talented doctors and paramedics, without whom we could not offer such a high quality, responsive service. They truly make a difference to people in their moment of greatest need. I hope you will be inspired by the stories in this impact report. You will see exactly what difference your support has made and why it is so vital. 3

How we help Magpas Air Ambulance brings crucial lifesaving care by land and air to patients in life-threatening emergencies in the East of England and beyond. Many of the UK s expert doctors and paramedics volunteer their own time to work with us. We benefit from a highly responsive and professional ambulance service in our region and support them when patients urgently need advanced medical care. In October 2015 we became the first air ambulance charity in the East of England to offer our service 24/7. The enhanced training the medical team receives allows them to perform procedures and treatments at the scene, such as general anaesthetic, which would otherwise only be available in hospital. This means that the frontline care our team delivers doesn t just save lives, it helps seriously ill and injured people return to a good quality of life. As Magpas Air Ambulance is not a state-funded service, we rely on the generous financial contributions of people like you. 13 Who we ve helped Bradley Bradley s eighth birthday wasn t one he or his family want to remember. In April 2015 he was at home when he suffered his first epileptic seizure completely out of the blue. Bradley s dad Charlie saw his son staring blankly and drooling, so he called 999 straight away. Birthday celebrations were put on hold as Doctor Tom Odbert and Paramedic Dan Read flew to treat Bradley at his home in Sawtry, Cambridgeshire. Bradley and his family visited the Magpas Air Ambulance base to meet Tom later in the year. Charlie said, Seeing how everything operates really brings home how they bring the trauma centre to a patient who s really sick. I ll never forget that day, when they just flew in and saved the situation. We re so, so grateful. The most frequent incidents our medical team are called to are road traffic collisions 11
12 Jessie and Lewis meet the team who saved his life
Lewis Kerr, competitive speedway rider Lewis is one of Britain s rising speedway stars after making his competitive debut in The 26 year-old from Norfolk was taking part in a race in Peterborough in August 2015 when he collided with another rider and hit a fence. He suffered serious head injuries. Magpas Doctor Raluca Treacy and Paramedic Dan Phillips flew to Lewis, and with his wife Jessie and family looking on, placed him in an induced coma on the track to protect his brain. He was then airlifted to hospital where he spent 3 more days in a coma. Lewis is thankfully back to competing and has since raised over 1,100 for us. He said, I won t ever be able to thank them enough for helping me. They say the first couple of hours are so important when you have a head injury. Those medics got me to the best place in good time. Jessie said, You never think something like that is ever going to happen to you or someone you love for a moment I thought I d lost him. The Magpas team is amazing. I don t want to think what might have happened to him if Magpas hadn t been there. 13
14 The scene of Barbara s collision
Barbara A momentary lapse in concentration ended in a serious road traffic collision for Barbara from Huntingdon. At a dangerous crossing on the A14 dual carriageway she pulled into an oncoming car travelling at 70mph. The full force of the impact crushed the side of Barbara s car, with the door frame caving in on her head. Magpas Air Ambulance flew to treat her and reduce the impact of her injuries, while the fire service cut her free from her car. Barbara has since made a full recovery and is back at work. She said, It was a very humbling experience to have such a quick response from the Magpas medical team in my moment of need. Following the crash, I learnt that many of these highly skilled clinicians volunteer their time in the service of caring for others with Magpas and that the service is almost entirely funded by charitable contributions. I can tell you that you will be grateful to the core of your being when they arrive to help, as I am. We must all support them - the life you save may be your own. We need 55 a day to reach seriously ill and injured patients using our rapid response vehicles 15
16
Our plans for next year With your continuing support, we have some ambitious plans for the future. Our main goal is to maintain the best 24/7 emergency medical service for our patients. We do this to save lives and help seriously ill and injured people return to a normal life as quickly as possible. Our Board of Trustees, together with our Chief Executive and fundraising team, have set out priorities for the next 5 years which require us to grow our fundraising in Over the next 5 years we want to: Make our air ambulance available 24/7 to respond to life-threatening emergencies whenever it s needed. Create and pilot the first pre-hospital emergency medicine training scheme nationally for paramedics. Relocate our operations base to a new, purpose-built facility. Replace our helicopter, which will be nearing the end of its operating life. Find out how you can help us achieve these goals on the next page. 40 doctors and paramedics regularly volunteer their time to save lives with us 17
Recruitment company The One Group has raised over 50,000 since 2008 by organising golf days 18
How you can help This year we need over 4 million to keep our lifesaving service available to people experiencing serious medical emergencies. There are lots of ways you can support us and also have fun while doing it. This past year saw our passionate and creative supporters raise much needed funds through activities ranging from a motorcycle rally, golfing days, cycling challenges, quiz nights, mountaineering, dinners, marathons, race nights, to even skydiving from 12,000 feet! Be sure to check with your employer as many businesses offer a matching contribution, which often doubles the impact of your gift. Recruitment company The One Group has raised over 50,000 since 2008 by organising golf days. Managing Director, Tristan Drane, says, It s an honour to support a charity which makes a difference to so many people. Our annual golf day has been not only a fantastic way of helping such a worthy cause, but also a great way for us to meet up with our clients in an informal setting. The popularity of the golf day now means we have prestigious clients approaching us to attend and most importantly sponsor the event which is fantastic for our brand, and more importantly, to Magpas Air Ambulance. 19

Why not get your school, workplace or sports club involved in our annual Orange Day, held each year in May? It s really simple - wear something orange and ask everyone to make a donation to Magpas Air Ambulance. Feeling lucky? We invite all of our supporters to join the Magpas Lottery where you have the chance to win 1,000 every week, plus other prizes. Join today for only 1 per week at magpas.org.uk/lottery For more information about holding your own fundraising challenge info@magpas.org.uk or call to request a fundraising pack. 14 pays for the medications to anaesthetise a seriously ill patient 21

Finances In 2015 our total expenditure for the year was 3,132,664, an increase of 10% on By becoming a 24/7 service our operating costs have slightly increased. We also saw a 16% increase in the number of incidents our expert medical team were called to. Our total income for the year grew by almost 28% to 3,543,403. This result is, in very small part, due to a grant made by HM Treasury, taken from the LIBOR banking fines, some of which has been set aside for air ambulance charities. We also continued to receive many contributions from community supporters and built upon the successful relationships we hold with corporate partners. Our lottery remained a primary source of income, with the weekly support of thousands of players providing us with crucial funds. 26 Thank you for your support You helped us raise over 3.5 million in We are very grateful for the generosity of our many supporters and sponsors. Individuals and businesses also offered their services in kind and donated their time and goods, often continuing their support over many years. This means we re able to put as much money as possible towards saving lives. Thank you! We are very grateful to everyone who has given their time, goods and energy for free. Special thanks go to: Digital Photography by Rob Holding, Cambridge Graphics, Software Major, Shooting Image, Elms Cambridge BMW, Bright Visions, CamCab, AG Motors, and Tee-Kay Packaging. We also maintain very successful working relationships with other local partners including EEAST Ambulance Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service, BASICS, and the region s other air ambulance charities, who share knowledge and skills so that we can all provide the greatest level of care to our patients. 24
