1 A STARTER BOOK OF CAMPAIGN TEMPLATES by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee The following are standard templates that every campaign will need, such as ways to sign up volunteers and track contributions. The Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC) offers a host of resources to progressive candidates so they can run smart, competent campaigns from Day One. 2 LEARN YOUR DISTRICT How many voters are registered with the Democratic Party? How many voters are registered with the Republican Party? How many voters are registered Independents? Is this an open seat, or is there an incumbent? Has a Democrat won this seat before? What percentage of the vote have Democratic candidates in your area received in recent elections? How many local elected officials serving now are Democrats or Working Families Party? Do you have strong ties to a particular demographic group? Where are the high voter turnout areas in the district? Are you known there, or do you have potential to be known there? When is the election? Is it a special election? How many candidates are expected to run?

4 MAKE YOUR MESSAGE Why am I the best candidate for this office? What are the issues that voters care most about? Why am I the best qualified to understand these issues? How am I best known in the district? How am I different from my opponent? Are there any obstacles in my record or experience that I need to overcome? Do I need to address these obstacles in my message? MESSAGING TIP Repeat, repeat, repeat! Everyone involved with your campaign must know the message and say it often. Make sure the message is used in phone and canvass scripts and all campaign literature.

7 HOW TO BE A GREAT DIGITAL VOLUNTEER (This memo is written to guide volunteers who want to help advocate for their candidate online. Feel free to pass along!) As a volunteer, you know that one of your main jobs is to spread the word about your candidate. Social media can be a great way to do that. Here are some tips for being a great digital volunteer : ON FACEBOOK o First of all, like your candidates Facebook pages. o Post and share positive news stories about your candidate. o Promote events, and invite your friends to attend events, including house parties, barbecues, phone banks, and canvasses. o RSVP for campaign events like pizza parties and canvasses. o Create groups (e.g., Women for Elizabeth Warren ). o Promote your groups by inviting friends and friends-of-friends. o Take pictures at events and post on your Facebook page. o Make sure the photos are well-lit and include lots of smiling, excited faces. Convey positive feelings through your pictures! o Friend campaign staff and volunteers, and help promote one another s posts. If someone posts an awesome news article about your candidate, be sure to like it! ON TWITTER o Follow the campaign s Twitter account. o Follow the Twitter accounts of campaign staff and other volunteers. o Retweet posts from the campaign. o Share links to positive news stories. o Engage other Twitter users respectfully. Keep a cool head and stay positive at all times. ON BLOGS o Create accounts on local blogs so you can comment. o Don t pretend to be someone you re not. o You are most effective as yourself. o Don t engage the trolls people who use hateful or incendiary speech. o Keep your comments respectful and fact-based. o Ignore the haters. o If you want to write blog posts yourself: Sometimes local bloggers will allow a guest post. You can create an account at Daily Kos and write posts there. o Be sure to share the links to your blog posts on Facebook and Twitter! o What makes an effective blog post? o Shares a new perspective. o Shares how you personally will be impacted by the election. o Shares how you personally have been impacted by the candidate.

8 HOUSE PARTY HOST GUIDE Thank you for your interest in organizing a House Party! These events are a critical part of our strategy to introduce our candidate to new supporters. This guide is designed to help you prepare for a great event. At all times, an organizer will be on hand to assist you and answer any questions as they come up. This is a people-powered campaign, and your work will go a long way to victory! 6 IMPORTANT STEPS TO HOSTING A GREAT EVENT 1. Set a Date, Time & Location We will send you a list of dates and times when the candidate is available to schedule an event. In general we try to schedule these events on weekends in order for the greatest number of people to be able to attend. If none of these times work, our organizers will work with you to find a time that will work. It usually works best to schedule these events in the homes of supporters. This gives the event the feeling of an intimate gathering. Our recruitment goal is to have at least 30 people in attendance for each event (past events have averaged between people) so it s important to make sure there is a space that can comfortably fit that many people. 2. Create a Recruitment List We ll help you brainstorm a list of people to invite to your house party. The first group of people should be people you know. Think friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, people in your church or synagogue, local Democratic organization members, members of your volunteer groups, etc. Try to come up with a list of at least people who you can invite. Since it s always better to have help, try to think of 2-3 close friends who can co-host the event. They can add their own contacts to the recruitment list and work with you and the campaign organizer to send invitations. The organizer will also help you create a list of likely Democratic voters in your area that you can add to your list of personal contacts. Once the event is scheduled, our volunteers can call likely voters in your area to invite them to attend. 3. Invite Your Network Once your recruitment list is created, you and the organizer can start inviting folks to attend the event. Remember that a short personal phone call is always more effective than an . And personal s are better than s to a group of people. Usually the best approach is to make a phone call and then follow up with a personal to make sure they received all the information correctly. Be sure to keep track of who says yes, no, and maybe so we can estimate how many people we should expect to show up. If our goal is 30 people attending the event, we ll need about 50 RSVPs. Some people always RSVP and then cancel at the last minute! 4. Confirm your RSVPs Two or three days before the event, all Yes or Maybe RSVP s should receive a phone call to confirm that they ll be attending (and ask them to bring friends!) The organizer will also send you a list of anyone who told the campaign that they were interested in attending, but who wasn t on the original list. 5. Prepare the Space Before the event, you and the organizer should schedule some time to walk through the space and think about how the event will flow. Where will the candidate speak? Where will people sit or stand? Where will people park? Where will people sign in? The organizer will also bring over materials like sign-in sheets, stickers, name tags, and markers. 6. During the Event Relax and have fun! Feel proud that you just organized such a successful event. Organizers from the campaign will help circulate sign-in sheets and urge attendees to donate and volunteer. You can help by making sure attendees are offered food and drink and tell them in your own words why you support our candidate!
