1 The Siren Sounds District 5M-8 District Governor Dave Thompson Hello fellow Lions, it is hard to believe that our new Lions year is here already, it seems like just yesterday we were kicking off District Governor Sandy s year. I want to take this opportunity to Thank DG Sandy for the leadership and guidance she has provided this past Lions year. I feel that with the exception of membership growth all the rest of her goals were met, and that is a great accomplishment. As your new District Governor, I am looking forward to working with her and 1 st VDG Donna Mae Landwehr and 2 nd VDG Duane Finger this coming year. Mary and I have just returned from Busan, South Korea where we attended training sessions, along with the Lions International Convention, At the Convention MD5M was represented by all 12 DGEs and their companions, DG Sandy Sandwick, CC Mike Molenda and Linda, CCE Bruce Beck and Erin, Executive Secretary Bob Harms and PDG Jim Aasness. It was exhausting at times, but very enjoyable. As part of the Convention, our New International President Wayne Madden revealed his Theme for the upcoming Lions year. His theme is In a World of Service. Under this theme he has encouraged us as Lions to continue to carry out many of the existing programs as we have in the past such as sight, hearing, humanitarian, and diabetes. He is adding a new program and that is called a Reading Action Program (RAP). I will be providing complete breakdown of this program in next month s newsletter. What President Madden is proposing is a racing formula of Dedication + Preparation + Teamwork = EXCELLENCE. You will hear this used a lot in the coming year as we move forward in Lionism in our respective clubs and organizations. I am looking forward to working with all Lions in the district this coming year. So I encourage you, that if you have not already done so, please submit your Governor s visit requests as soon as you can. There is a form included in this newsletter. I am also including a form for the new Club Excellence Award. As a DG, I have already carried out the first form of official business by submitting a emergency grant request to Lions Clubs International Foundation, for flooding in the Sturgeon Lake, Willow River, Rutledge of our district. We are working on finalizing the Zone chair training and will be contacting the zone chairs with in the first week of July with a date and time. I will continue to always offer that if you have any questions or issues I am always open to being contacted, and if I do not have the answer I will do everything in my power to get it. Keep working towards meeting the challenges and until next month have a good summer. 4 Now as your 1 st VDG Donna Mae Landwehr. As we come to the end of another great Lions year, we have many things that have been outstanding in the past year. We have a new club of 31 members, and we also had a great charter night with many clubs attending and many gifts from clubs to help them get started. This really shows true Lionism in our district. I would like to thank the St Joseph Lions Club for sponsoring the new Club. The new club will have a great Guiding Lion with PCC Jim Diehl, thanks Jim. Now let s all enjoy the summer and look into the new year. I hope that the New Officers from all the clubs and members start thinking about attending the Mini forum that will be held in Foley, MN at Henry s on Oct. 9, Second Vice District Governor Duane Finger This is a start to exciting years to come, which Marilyn and I are looking forward to. Since my election in February, I have paid particular attention what great things the Lions Clubs have done locally and world wide. It is amazing what the motto: We Serve has done. I m looking forward to working with DG Dave, VDG Donna and the 5M8 Cabinet. I m proud to be a Lion, so should you! The Lions of Minnesota formed the Diabetes Foundation Inc. and pledged $250, for research to change the world for people afflicted with Diabetes. Garage Sale for Diabetes In an effort to meet our share of the 3 year commitment pledge to Diabetes Research, the Little Falls Dandee Lions held a very successful 3 day Garage Sale. This pledge is being used to develop Magnetic Resonance Imaging Assessment tools to advance the cure for diabetes. The Little Falls Radio Station KLTF, the local Morrison County Record, and the caring people of our community help us with our success. The generosity of the many people that donated items and those purchasing them was heartwarming and welcomed. 7 WAYNE A. MADDEN, INDIANA BUSINESS LEADER, ELECTED LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT OAK BROOK, IL, USA, June, 26, 2012 Wayne A. Madden of Auburn Indiana, USA, was elected president of The International Association of Lions Clubs at the association's 95th International Convention, held in Busan, Korea June 22-26, President Madden is an insurance agent and a certified insurance counselor. President Madden will lead the association that has more than 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs in 206 countries and geographic areas around the world. He will also help set the direction for Lions Clubs International Foundation and the foundation s SightFirst Program to rid the world of preventable and reversible blindness. A member of the Auburn Lions Club since 1984, President Madden has held many offices within the association including Campaign SightFirst II sector coordinator for Indiana. He also served as president of the Indiana Lions Foundation. In recognition of his service to the association, he has received many awards, including Life Membership in the Association and the Ambassador of Good Will Award, the highest honor the association bestows upon its members. He is a Charter W.P. Woods Fellow, a Kentucky Colonel, a Duke of Paducah, a Helen Keller Fellow and a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow. In 2008, he was recognized for his humanitarian service by the governor of Indiana as a Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest honor the governor can bestow. Lions clubs are known for their efforts to preserve sight and eradicate blindness, as well as their commitment to community service and helping youth. 8 Dues increase: A resolution to increase International Dues to be phased in over two years was voted and approved by the membership at the International Convention. The Dues increase will be effective July 1, Dues will be billed as follows: MEMBERSHIP DUES. (a) Semi-annual membership dues of twenty dollars and fifty cents (US$20.50) denominated in U.S. dollars shall be levied on each club member during the term, beginning July 1, (b) Semi-annual membership dues of twenty-one dollars and fifty cents (US$21.50) denominated in U.S. dollars shall be levied on each member during the term, beginning July 1, (c) For family membership programs as adopted by the International Board of Directors, the following dues shall apply: (1) The first family member, Head of Household, shall pay semi-annual membership dues as provided in sub-section (a) or (b) above, depending on the term. (2) Subsequent qualifying family members, not to exceed four additional qualifying members per household, shall pay semiannual membership dues equal to one-half (1/2) of the total amount paid by the first family member as described in subsection (c)(1). (d) For student membership programs as adopted by the International Board of Directors, eligible student members shall pay semi-annual membership dues equal to one-half (1/2) of the total amount of dues as provided in sub-section (a) or (b) above, depending on the term..
