4 MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER OF WASHINGTON, DC About our event In 2015, more than 6,000 people helped the American Cancer Society raise $337,000 to save lives from breast cancer Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of DC benefited from the support of more than 200 local businesses and organizations from the DC, MD, and VA (DMV) communities. Making a difference to help save lives from breast cancer in the DMV communities. The American Cancer Society relies on more than 100 years of evidence and proven results to prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish suffering from the disease. There s hardly a person or family who hasn t benefited, directly or indirectly, from our work to eliminate breast cancer and all cancers as a major health problem. Here are a few examples of how we re putting dollars to work in the DMV communities. Helping people take steps to stay healthy Working with employers, health systems and community partners to educate people about cancer prevention and early detection and increase health care access for at-risk populations Developing science-based guidelines and information about the best, proven ways to save lives from breast cancer, and all cancers Helping people facing cancer today Fulfilling more than 10,810 requests in DMV last year for cancer information via phone, , and online chats Providing more than 8,135 rides to and from their cancer-related appointments Providing more than 1,320 patients and caregivers with free lodging while traveling away from home for treatment Helping guide more than 3,845 patients through the health care system Helping 3,401 breast cancer patients with information, support and services Helping more than 1,250 people learn how to manage the appearance-related side effects of treatment Helping find cancer s causes and cures The American Cancer Society is currently funding 198 research grants with $83.5 million directly related to breast cancer, including $2.67M in Maryland, $1.73M in Virginia and $3.6M in DC. By funding the best new research, we are helping to find cures for every community Rallying communities to fight back Bringing together more than 6,000 participants and volunteers at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in DC Helped secure $10M in the MD state budget for tobacco control Helped secure $1.36 M in funding for tobacco prevention and cessation programs DC Secured a 9% increase in VA cancer research funding and protected $405,200 in funding for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program
