1 Clinical Leads Update Meeting Report from event held on 9 December 2015 Introduction The purpose of the event was to provide Network clinical leads with an opportunity to look at: The Clinical Networks role within the NHS landscape. Update on cross cutting themes identified in October Addressing the work plan needs for 2016 and beyond. Networking opportunities to share new information and knowledge. The event was aimed at a mixture of delegates who all have a clinical leadership role within the four clinical networks. The event was chaired by Dr Robin Mitchell, Clinical Director and Roy McLachlan, Associate Director and was well attended with an audience of 42 delegates. See Appendix 1 for the programme and Appendix for delegate list. Presentations The speaker s presentations were thought-provoking and generated a good deal of interest and yielded lively discussion from the floor. Questions raised included How are Network GP Leads connecting up with CCG GP Domain Leads and do Network Leads know their commissioners? One suggestion from the floor was to read the NHS England Commissioning Intentions How does NICE Guidance inform commissioning intentions? One suggestion was for secondary care to implement NICE guidance and monitor through assurance routes. The CCG Forum may be a forum to consider regional issues. There was further discussion around New models of care and how CCGs are starting to work on whole health economies with CCGs clustering with providers to develop ways of working. Vanguards. Measuring what we do Do we measure our strength by the number of people we bring together across different services and organisations? Is there a framework that we can use? Suggestions from the floor included a short questionnaire about value. Communications The Network is currently working with the Communication Lead from the Academic Health Science Network for North East and North Cumbria to review and clarify the Network s key messages, define target audiences and look for opportunities to increase engagement with agreed stakeholders using a range of communications activities. Ideas included regular communications with support officers and managers and website alerts. All presentations are available on our website 1
2 Workshops The purpose of the workshops was to provide delegates with an update from the cross-cutting work of the Network and was divided into two sessions. In the first session, participants attended Public and Patient Involvement and End of Life. During the second session, participants attended Prevention/Awareness/Early Diagnosis and Person Centred Care/Shared Decision Making. Actions from the workshops Public and Patient Involvement - Children and young people are a particular group where more work needs to be done. Further discussions will take place at Child Health Clinical Advisory Group on 21 April End of Life - Deciding Right app is available on the Google Play of Apple app store with version 2 in the final stages. Diseases other than cancer having the same quality of access to palliative and end of life care will be taken back to the Palliative and End of Life Care Group on 10 December Prevention/Awareness/Early Diagnosis - NESCN will review the joint work programme developed with Public Health England North East to ensure that all Networks are reflected in the plan. The work plan is available on the NESCN website and will be shared with each of the network groups. The conversations on the day identified a need to understand the different levels of interventions that health care professionals can offer. These can range from an early brief conversation to plant the seed with patients to make lifestyle changes, to a more detailed intervention to help them recover from illness or improve their condition. We touched on offering information or support to access lifestyle interventions, through to actively delivering the interventions. Clinical Leaders can also play an important part in influencing others to ensure that prevention is seen as everybody s business. NESCN will explore the possibility of developing a quick reference guide to different levels of intervention that may be appropriate at the various stages of the healthcare pathway. Person Centred Care/Shared Decision Making - the project leads are currently shaping a project proposal to support practical implementation and leadership in shared decision making the conversations from the tables at this event will inform the proposal and further views will be sought from the group in coming weeks. Evaluation of the Event A total of 42 people attended the event and 20 evaluation forms were completed, this being 48% of the delegates. 17 of the 20 evaluations forms that delegates returned reviewed the event as interesting and 16 useful professionally. 16 of delegates were satisfied with the content, 17 with speakers and 19 with the overall organisation. All comments and scorings received from the evaluation forms will be reviewed aiming to continue with what works well and improve in identified weak areas. Next Steps: A follow on meeting was suggested and two topics were proposed Our role in transformational change 7 day working for elective services How do we become more efficient? Finally, our appreciation goes to the presenters and all those who participated in the workshops and making the event a success. 2
