1 0 The Heroes & Villains Run Off The Fence Fundraising Pack Charity Number: Charitable Company Number:
2 1 WELCOME! Thank you for your interest in fundraising for us! We really value your help in raising vital funds for Off The Fence which allow us to support vulnerable people in Brighton & Hove. Off The Fence is a charity that has helped rough sleepers find accommodation, female clients rediscover independence and young people receive guidance, teaching and mentoring. The long- lasting changes we have seen would not be possible without the support of people like you. Every year Off The Fence meets the needs of thousands of people in our local community by providing frontline, long-term and life-changing services. For our work to keep pace with the increasing needs of our City we need your continued support. Events are a great way to generate support, get others involved in a challenge and raise sponsorship money for Off The Fence. The events are also great fun and a way to meet others who support this cause! This pack contains all you need to know about this event, tips for those taking part and some simple forms to kick off your fundraising effort. We are always happy to answer your queries so drop any questions you have to Hannah.lyon@offthefence.org.uk. Will you join us and share our mission in resisting poverty, empowering people and restoring hope? We need you. Thank you and go for it! Paul Young CEO & Founder, Off The Fence
3 2 WHAT DOES OFF THE FENCE DO? ANTIFREEZE Antifreeze gives life-saving support to homeless individuals around the City as well as those who, for many years, have struggled with addictions, mental health issues, job loss, violence and grief which have led to life on the streets. Our outreach team invite homeless individuals to the Day Centre which offers various levels of help. We listen to them and value them as people, offering motivational interviewing and one to one sessions with trained keyworkers. We provide access to a telephone, computers as well as foot care, healthcare, dental care, and legal advice. We offer help and alternative options to support homeless individuals and prevent more clients from entering a life on the streets. We work closely with many agencies to ensure our clients get the best possible help and liaise on their behalf with issues such as housing, temporary accommodation, offending history and finances. GATEWAY The Gateway centre provides a flexible, non-judgemental support service for women experiencing difficulties such as abuse, isolation, mental health issues, financial and emotional crisis. We allow women to talk confidentially to trained staff, obtain advice and receive practical and emotional support. They can learn skills in various workshops including IT and craft. We treat each woman as an individual, providing relevant help, including networking to agencies as required. We also offer an outreach befriending service; we carry out home visits, make regular contact with clients and accompany them to hospital or doctors appointments, court visits or tribunals. Our aim is to encourage, support and motivate our clients. SCHOOLS & YOUTH The Schools & Youth Team support schools in Brighton & Hove. The team deliver a package of after school activities, assemblies, Self-Esteem lessons, Prayer Spaces, Drug and alcohol awareness lessons, mentoring and safe space drop ins. The aim of the programme is to equip young people for dealing with difficulties later in life, encourage them to build healthy friendships, grow in confidence and prevent them from entering a life of addiction and poverty. MINISTRY Having ministered in over 50 countries, Off The Fence founders Paul and Wendy Young now serve their local community through preaching, teaching and training in the Christian faith, supporting those at risk and offering training to groups reaching out to the marginalised. This includes schools, churches and many other significant community organisations who believe in the positive nature of the Christian faith.
4 3 WHY DO WE NEED YOUR HELP? ANTIFREEZE Brighton & Hove is still one of the most deprived areas in the country. Homelessness is three times the national average, and drug use and suicide rates are high. The Council s Homelessness Strategy (of which Off The Fence was a consultee) quotes this strategy can only be delivered by working together with all our partners to design and provide a holistic homelessness service. Last year alone, 1570 street visits were made to those sleeping rough around the City. 586 sleeping bags were handed out by our team and 2807 visits were made to the Antifreeze clothing store in homeless individuals requested one to one client care with members of the team, the Day Centre was accessed a total of 7867 times last year. Antifreeze referred 218 individual clients and successfully housed 62 clients. GATEWAY The drop in centre was accessed 848 times, a huge increase on the 567 visits During 2013, the workshops were accessed 192 times, over 42 food parcels were handed out to those in need and 347 one to one support sessions took place between trained staff and clients. Sussex police reports that over 60 reports of domestic abuse are received daily. Mental Health figures state that of the 1 in 4 who encounter mental illness each year, those who seek help are most likely to be female. SCHOOLS & YOUTH In 2013 the team worked weekly with over 200 students between 6 and 18 years old, many of whom struggle to engage socially, build relationships and come from unsettling home lives. In May 2014, a study conducted across Sussex showed that in Brightoand Hove, 13% of children and young people have reported using drugs. The national average is 4%. There were also 37 hospital admissions for year olds due to substance misuse, at a rate of 85.6 per 100,000 of the population. The national average is 63.5 per 100,000 people. HOW YOUR HELPS: 10- Would buy 1 Sleeping bag. 20- Would fund an hour of drop in sessions at Gateway. 50- Would help with equipment & resources for safespaces and schoolrequested courses such as Drug & Alcohol awareness Would allow the ongoing supply of food from a local agency for Antifreeze. This will feed over 150 clients Would provide material supplies for one year at Gateway s weekly craft & art therapy classes This would be enough to provide Antifreeze with 100 life-saving sleeping bags.
