2 The Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA) works to improve the lives of people born with a cleft and their families in the United Kingdom. We are a 20,000 strong community of parents, patients, cleft healthcare professionalss and more, all dedicated to raising awareness and working together to overcome any barriers caused by cleft lip and palate. Our vision is of a society where everyone affected by cleft feels supported, connected and empowered to take control wherever they are on their cleft journey. What is Cleft Lip and Palate? Early on in pregnancy, different parts of the face form and come together just above the top lip. If this doesn t happen quite as it should, the result is a gap or cleft in the upper lip, the palate (roof of the mouth), or both. It s usually caused by a mix of genetic and environmental factors coming together in a way which can t be predicted or prevented. Around one in 700 people are born with a cleft that s 1,200 each year in the UK alone. Cleft lip and palate has a wide range of causes, issues and outcomes, with a treatment pathway lasting twenty years or more. No two families will be affected in the same way. The journey through treatment and beyond isn t easy, but CLAPA believes that with the right help and support, everyone affected by cleft can face the world with a smile. What does CLAPA do? CLAPA works to improve the lives of everyone born with a cleft and their families in the UK by providing knowledge, practical support, a community and a voice for people affected by cleft. Our services include: Online and local support groups help peoplee affected by cleft to feel positive, connected, and in control. Local and national events from family days to confidence building weekends which bring people together so no one has to go through their journey alone. Specialist feeding equipment for babies born with a cleft in the UK, and supplies nearly 500 new families with freee Welcome Packs each year. Trained parent and patient volunteers providing one on one support at all points of the cleft journey. A comprehensive, accessible information service led by the needs of our community. Trained volunteers educate schools, local communities and healthcare professionals about cleft lip and palate. even Collaboration with researchers to make their work accessible to our whole community.
3 CLAPA s Strategy In recent years, CLAPA has worked to build a solid foundationn for the future by employing home based Regional Coordinators throughout the UK to kick start to the local community. new activities, train volunteers, develop strong links with the NHS Cleft Teams, and act as CLAPA s link This independently evaluated project has seen fantastic successs so far in setting up locally led services and support networks, and in giving different areas of the UK a local advocate. In the lead up to 2020 our priority is to grow our income and infrastructure enough to support a full time local staff member in every region of the UK. Our strategy also includes the expansionn of our services for adults, teenagers and older children born with a cleft. This Post As the Adult Services Coordinator, your chief responsibility will be to conduct research to identify the needs of adults with a cleft, and to coordinate a programme of support servicess and activities to meet these needs. Reporting to the CEO and Deputy CEO, this job will inform and shape our adults engagement strategy. The role is fully funded, and is for a fixed period of three years. To be successful in this role, you will need to encourage our community to engage with our work and use what you learn to make our services and communications more applicable to adults. You will be the link between CLAPA s services and those people that need them the most, finding new and innovative ways to engage with our users. You will be expected report and publish your findings with support from the CEO and you will be encouraged to present your findings at scientific and clinical conferences. This is an exciting, varied role, with the opportunity to make a long term differencee to CLAPA s strategy and delivery. Working for CLAPA Over the past six years, CLAPA has quadrupled in size to 24 staff members, most of whom are part time and/or home based. But with all this growth, we haven t lost our heart as a small, friendly charity where everyone pitches in and each contribution is valued. 4 Adult Services Coordinator (Fixed Term) Job Description Salary: 25 30k p.a. (depending on experience) Hours: Full time (35 hours per week) Fixed Term (Three years) Reporting to: Chief Executive, Deputy Chief Executive Based at: CLAPA Office (EC1V 7LQ), Angel Islington, London Benefits: 25 days paid annual leave (pro rata), plus bank holidays and closure over Christmas from 24 th December to 2 nd January inclusive. Flexible working hours as agreed by manager, access to unpaid leave and Time Off In Lieu policy. 5% non contributory pension. Job Description CLAPA s new Adults Support Programme will enable adults born with a cleft to overcome cleft related challenges and lead more fulfilling lives. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator able to juggle many competing priorities with a positive attitude and a genuine passion for supporting the people CLAPA works with. They will have a strong understanding of how to use data/research to inform future strategy, and will enjoy the challenge of using CLAPA s limited resources to improve services for adults. This role will particularly appeal to someone with an interest or background in quantitative research. Key Tasks To investigate the unique experiences and needs of adults born with a cleft by exploring recent research into the area. To carry out surveys, hold focus groups and consult with the CLAPA community about their experiences. To be the main point of contact for the Adult Voices Council (AVC), to attend their quarterly meetings and to be in regular contact with the members between meetings. To carry out and publish your own research around the needs of adults born with a cleft. To use your research, work with colleagues in the regions and the AVC to coordinate and deliver a programme of services for adults affected by cleft. To provide support to CLAPA s network of Peer Supporters in partnership with the regional team. To provide support for people affected by cleft via social media. To work with colleagues to organise an annual conference. To produce an Evaluation Report on the programme by the end of year 3 with recommendations for the future. To work with the Fundraising team to secure funding to continue the work at the end of the 3 years. Person Specification Essential Experience of working with people in a supporting and/or informing capacity Ability to work with staff members, health professionals and volunteers at all levels Ability to plan and manage a number of simultaneous activities and deal with conflicting priorities to meet targets and deadlines
