1 Did you know one in seven children in the UK and Ireland goes to school without breakfast? Stop Hunger Hunger and malnutrition is a major issue globally, but also closer to home Stop Hunger is a Sodexo initiative tackling hunger and malnutrition and, in the UK and Ireland, it is managed through the Sodexo Foundation.
2 Stop Hunger across the world 30 countries 30,000 volunteers Phil Hooper Corporate Affairs Director for Sodexo UK & Ireland and Chair of The Sodexo Foundation Welcome Serves nearly 2.9 million meals Raises 1.4m a year to help fund innovative projects fighting hunger As chair of the Sodexo Foundation I am very pleased to share some highlights from the last year, stories from the brilliant charities we ve supported and the unusual and inventive ways we ve raised money for Stop Hunger. Stop Hunger seeks to tackle hunger and malnutrition under the banner of the Sodexo Foundation in the UK and Ireland. Last year we continued to support the invaluable work of FareShare who now feed one million people a month and work with over 2,000 charities across the UK to redirect food to those who need it most. Other long-term partnerships include the Outward Bound Trust and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA). In addition to our long-standing partnerships, we ve recently started to fund innovative projects such as the Eat, Cook, Grow programme with Providence Row and Edible Gardens with Trees for Cities. About Sodexo Sodexo is the world leader in Quality of Life Services. Every day, 35,000 employees in the UK and Ireland work hard to improve the quality of life for all the people we serve, as well as contributing to the economic, social and environmental development of the communities in which we operate. Corporate responsibility and Stop Hunger Through the Better Tomorrow Plan, our sustainability strategy to 2020, we commit to supporting the communities in which we work. Stop Hunger helps us to fulfil some of our community investment commitments. What charities does Stop Hunger support? All money raised in the UK and Ireland goes to local charities including: n Action for Kids helps young people with n learning difficulties to cook n Coram educates children about nutrition, wellness and exercise physical activity n FareShare ensures surplus but fit for n purpose food goes to shelters and charities rather than to landfill n St. Vincent de Paul helps families and individuals in financial hardship providing food and support at key pressure points during the year such as Christmas time Outward Bound gives young people the chance to enhance their understanding of the relationship between healthy diets and Trees for Cities their Edible Gardens regenerate underused school land into gardens that can be used by school children and local communities to grow their own fruit and veg We raised almost 500,000 in 2013 a fantastic achievement we always want to do more, and with your help I think we can. I hope that you are inspired by the stories we ve brought together here and that you enjoy this update on the work of Stop Hunger in the UK and Ireland. Thank you for your continued support. Children enjoying Edible Gardens Coram Outward Bound
3 Employee support of Stop Hunger The Sodexo Foundation depends on employees fundraising and volunteering. Here are a few of the events and challenges that took place in the last 12 months. Afghandback n 787 colleagues n 100 clients n 14,000 miles n 20,000 Tim Fagan, London CAPMAC contract director, and his team in in Sodexo Defence rallied 787 colleagues, 100 clients and customers, to cycle 14,000 miles on exercise bikes at 75 locations including London s St Pancras station, Windsor s train stations, the Falkland Islands and Cyprus. The idea was to cycle the equivalent distance from the UK to Afghanistan and back in a day. They cycled far further and raised almost 20,000 in the process. Money raised went to Stop Hunger and the charity supporting Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA). World record-breaking football match n 53 hours n 65 colleagues n 18,000 Sodexo Ireland entered the Guinness Book of Records by playing the longest ever five-a-side football game for a staggering 53 hours, involving 65 Sodexo employees. The idea was masterminded and coordinated by Andrew McGinley, Account Manager, corporate services, with support and input from colleagues and clients. In total, the team raised 18,000, which Stop Hunger shared between the Irish Cancer Society, Barnardo s Ireland and the Society of St Vincent de PaulSt Vincent de Paul, a charity dedicated to tackling poverty. Already we have seen plenty of employee involvement in Stop Hunger during Three Peaks Challenge On 7 June, 57 determined challengers turned out to take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks, despite the forecasted bad weather. The event challenged participants to walk or run 25 miles over the three highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales in just 24 hours. Colleagues battled through torrential rain, high winds and tough terrain. David Scott and Darren Townsend from Sodexo s AstraZeneca contract were this year s quickest entrants, completing the 25 mile course in 5 hours, 28 minutes. Sodeox s Health and Wellbeing Programme with Outward Bound In 2014, the Health and Wellbeing Programme gave 144 young people from Scotland and 48 from Salford experiences to enhance their understanding of the relationship between healthy diets and physical activity. Forty then progressed to take part in a three day residential course to build their confidence and social skills. The relationship has benefited from the unwavering support of Derek Coulter, buying liaison manager, Purchasing and Mike France, Account Manager, Education. Our volunteers ensure the young people get the most out of the challenge with Sodexo experts on hand to: deliver health eating sessions, support team building activity days and prepare and cook meals during their three day residential adventure. Climbing Kilimanjaro In May 2014, Andy Leach, managing director of Sodexo Defence, and a team of four serving members of the British Army and seven other retired military personnel and civilians, climbed to the summit of Kilimanjaro raising money for charities including Stop Hunger. So far Andy has raised over 5,500 for Stop Hunger. Fareshare volunteers Afghandback World record-breaking football match
4 How can you help? There are a number of ways you can support Stop Hunger: Payroll giving Through our payroll giving scheme*, you can contribute monthly from your salary before tax. That means if you give 1 a month, it will only cost you 80p. What s more, Sodexo will contribute 50p for every 1, up to a cap of 25,000, so for every 80p it costs you, Stop Hunger gets If everyone at Sodexo gave just 1 a month, we would raise over 600,000 in a year. Add that to our current fundraising and we would smash our target of 1m a year! To sign up, visit You will need your employee number and your segment and don t forget to pick Stop Hunger as your charity of choice. *Please note the Payroll Giving programme is only open to colleagues in the UK at this point in time. Sponsor-me If you want to climb, cycle, walk or even jump for Stop Hunger and you d like people to sponsor you, please use the Charities Trust sponsor-me web page and select Stop Hunger as your preferred charity. Volunteer Keep an eye out for new volunteering opportunities in The Weekly Brief and on the volunteering page of Sodeox_Net.
