2 FIRST On January 25, GCM Grosvenor volunteers worked hard to serve Robeson High School, located in the Englewood neighborhood. Check out more information on this neighborhood by viewing the attached neighborhood guide. Schools often serve as the center of community life and safe havens within communities, particularly those struggling with violence. The fresh coats of paint you provided to classrooms, new benches you built, and the canvas murals you created will brighten up the overall environment. According to The Center for Disease Control, the design of the school environment can reduce fear and increase safety by creating a warm and welcoming environment, fostering a sense of physical and social order, and sending positive messages to students. Your support and service was greatly appreciated by the staff and students. On behalf of Chicago Cares, thank you! It was a pleasure serving alongside you all. At Chicago Cares, we believe in continuous improvement. Will you take 5 minutes in the next week to fill out this survey? Your feedback will help us provide the best volunteer experiences possible. Even if you couldn t participate, we d still like your feedback. Survey Link: insert link here Project Site: Robeson High School Did you love volunteering? Keep up the good work! Chicago Cares has more than 200 projects every month you can sign up for on your own, or go with friends or coworkers! Just visit to create a profile and register. Thanks again for making a difference! - The Chicago Cares team REMINDER Thank you again for your hard work in transforming Haines Elementary on September 27! If you ve already completed our survey, thanks! If you haven t yet, please take 5 minutes to share your feedback by DATE, whether you were able to participate in the volunteer day or not. Survey Link: insert link here Project Site: Haines Elementary Thanks again for your time, and we look forward to serving with you again soon! - The Chicago Cares team Friendly reminder: You can sign up to volunteer with us again at We have more than 200 projects every month!
3 2017 IMPACT R E P O R T Thank you to the volunteers of Uptake! Thanks to the volunteers at Uptake, students at Cook Elementary School in Chicago s Auburn Gresham neighborhood know that there are adults committed to their success. On Monday, January 16, Uptake joined Chicago Cares in a day of service at Cook Elementary, a public school in Chicago s Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the Southwest Side. Principal Narineh Gharashor and her staff are committed to the lives of their students. Cook s goals include: prioritizing safety and security; increasing attendance; increasing academic achievement; and strengthening the parent-teacher-school partnership. Uptake volunteers participated in the following activities to help Cook further its goals of being a safe space where students have the opportunity to thrive: Made 5 fleece blankets which were distributed to seniors in the community Served lunch and facilitated a Martin Luther King, Jr. discussion with 17 seniors and veterans from the community Provided fresh coats of paint for three classrooms Created a domino mosaic to be hung in one of Cook s hallways, spreading MLK s message of justice and unity Cleaned and organized an old library to make it easier for students to access books Built three benches for students to have a place to read Created eight college themed canvas murals to inspire students to continue their education Created two canvas murals for St. Sabina Thanks to your hard work, the lives of students and seniors in Auburn Gresham are brighter today. But the work doesn t end here! In fact, this is only the beginning. Contact us to learn about further partnership opportunities to support the community and school. CHICAGO CARES & UPTAKE: AT A GLANCE 62 volunteers 10 volunteer leaders 252 volunteer hours
4 VOLUNTEER FEEDBACK BY THE NUMBERS 96% of volunteers said they re proud of Uptake and its commitment to service It was a great way to help those in need Here s a sampling of feedback from volunteers about what they liked best about the day: Going to a part of the city that I would have never gone to on my own along with being greeted by the kids from the school. Connecting with a new community. Meeting the students and finding out what they are most interested in. I enjoyed coming into contact with a community that I wouldn't ordinarily interact with. The morning presentation where the Keep in touch community sort of presented itself was really great. I loved being able to work with the kids in the community. We had hilarious conversations and it was awesome to see them come in to volunteer on their day off. It was a great way to help those in need! Those kids were a blast to hang out with and learn more about. You re part of Chicago Cares community and we want to keep in touch! Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Do you have a specific question, or want to start planning your next project? development@chicagocares.org or call % of volunteers said they feel more passionate about the community needs Uptake is meeting 93% of volunteers said the project helped enhance relationships with coworkers 93% of volunteers agreed they helped make Cook Elementary and the Auburn Gresham community stronger by volunteering
