PRO YOUTH & FAMILIES ANNUAL REPORT for

Dear PRO Family and Friends, This year, PRO is leading the way on a new revolutionary way to serve the public. We have banded together non-profit organizations, for-profit organizations, and the business community to form the Youth and Family Collective (YFC). Through strategic partnerships, collaboration, and an efficient use of resources, the YFC will be able to confront youth, family, and community trauma by providing high-quality responsive and equitable resources that are necessary to achieve real results for low-opportunity communities. To accomplish this mission, the YFC will be developing a new model, bringing like-minded organizations throughout the region together to collaboratively deliver and sustain a broad scope of proven strategies that build healthy communities through the five drivers of change: people power, youth leadership development, enhanced collaboration and policy innovation, leveraged partnerships and resources, and the ability to change the narrative. The involved organizations include the 17 local and statewide non-profit organizations, the two for-profit organizations, and the three business consultant groups. We are excited to see what the next year holds for PRO Youth & Families and the YFC. As always, thanks for your support! Sincerely, Staci Anderson, President & CEO
PRO Youth & Families confronts the trauma youth, families, and communities face by inspiring, educating, and mobilizing young people. We make a difference by keeping young people off the streets, out of prison and away from alcohol, drugs, and gangs by providing them with meaningful and life-changing opportunities. We are committed to strengthening youth -- and their families and communities -- by developing neighborhood networks, identifying and addressing needs, and by providing training and other resources. In general, our services and trainings fall into these categories: advocacy & civic engagement, mentoring, reducing underage drinking, relationship skills, and summer learning opportunities.
The Thousand Strong program, spearheaded by the and, equips youth with the training and skills necessary to succeed in the workforce. Youth participate in PRO Youth & Families has a longstanding history of this yearlong program that offers training, jobs, providing high quality mentoring services for young and paid internships. PRO was able to implement this program thanks to a fellowship with an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer, Mandy Irvine, who coordinated the construction of a Little Free Library at the Fruitridge Community Collaborative site, and other little libraries throughout the Sacramento region. PRO also partnered with Free Books For Kids, a nonprofit organization that provided students with books of their own. The program was held at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Sacramento and was attended by 29 participants.
City Hall was a four-week program that included both public service and civic engagement activities. Students attended our civic leadership workshops where they learned about public service, local government, civic engagement, and skills for workforce readiness. In addition to the training workshops, a majority of the participants were matched with offices where they completed summer internships. The provide worked hard in order to the students with varied learning opportunities ranging from presentations, to visits to the city departmental office, to field trips to see the city s various service departments in action.

These transit posters were placed in bus stop marquees in neighborhoods targeted by PRO Youth & Families. These areas included Laguna/Bruceville, Franklin Blvd., Sheldon Rd., Howe Ave., Stockton Blvd., and Arden Arcade.
PRO Youth & Families reached out to approximately 1,100 former participants with regard to the annual PRO Alumni Survey. This survey is at the core of our evaluation work, because our programs aim to equip young people and families with long term skills and aptitudes that help them succeed in life after the program. Aggregated survey data continues to shape our program development, and also continues to encourage us to fulfill our mission. We have received responses from nearly 450 alums over the past several years, and some of those results are featured below. 70% of respondents said PRO made them more hopeful about their future. 75% of alums said PRO was one of the best things available for kids in their neighborhood. 47% said they are more involved in their community now because of their experience in PRO. 74% said that PRO helped them become confident that they can advocate (speak up for) for issues that are important to them. 60% of alums said that their experience in PRO gave them advantage in the workforce; 82% included their PRO experience on their resume and 77% included it on job applications. 83% of respondents said they listed their PRO experience on their college application(s); 96% said they enrolled in college within one year of high school graduation. 63% used their PRO experience to apply for college scholarships and 13% say they were awarded college scholarships due, in part, to their experience in PRO. 66% of respondents said that being in PRO made them feel more confident about going to college. 60% of PRO alums were first generation college students. 78% are confident that they can make change in their own neighborhoods.
PRO Youth & Families is proud to be supported by outstanding public institutions and many private entities. An overview of our audited financials is depicted here for your reference. Additional details can be found online at
Trauma often stems from adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) which includes abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction (see chart to the right). Just 1 of these ACEs increases the risk of physical ailments and social and emotional problems. Nearly 1 in 4 Sacramento youth have at least 2 of ACEs (Child & Adolescent Measurement Initiative, 2014). Four or more ACEs increases the risk of depression by 460%, and suicide by 1,220% (CAMI, 2014). The data is part of the story, but we know that these young people each has their own journies. So, every day, we work in the community to build each other up to inspire, educate, and mobilize youth so they can visualize and actualize big dreams and bright futures.
