1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Location: Reports To: Media and Communications Officer Cardiff Director, Welsh NHS Confederation Prepared: 4 July 2018 PURPOSE To support delivery of the overall work programme of the Welsh NHS Confederation, particularly through a strong communications and media programme. The Welsh NHS Confederation is the only national membership organisation for the NHS in Wales. Our members are the seven health boards and the three trust. Our vision is for an empowered health population supported by world class health and care services. Our aim is to be the authentic voice for NHS Leadership in Wales. We support our members to improve health and well being by working with them to deliver high standards of care for patients and best value for taxpayers money. We act as a driving force for positive change through strong representation and our policy, influencing and enagement work. The role is responsible for co-ordinating and implementing the communications work of the Welsh NHS Confederation in order to support members, build profile and enhance influence. NATURE & SCOPE The Welsh NHS Confederation is a high-profile organisation within Wales. Media and communications work is crucial in reinforcing and strengthening our position with various audiences. The postholder will have responsibility for the day-to-day communications, including with national, regional and local media, social media, website content and publications. The post holder will work with the Welsh team to ensure consistent messages are delivered to members and external audiences across the breadth of our work. He/she will advise on all our media handling including drafting messages, producing press releases and statements, and all other aspects of media relations. He/she will also be responsible for producing the regular Welsh NHS Confederation updates, the Annual Review, and for writing copy for other communications materials. The postholder will provide writing and communications expertise across the work of the Welsh NHS Confederation - publications, policy, engagement, events and public affairs.
2 ACCOUNTABILITIES Handle day-to-day media work, ensuring enquiries are logged and responded to, and that spokespeople are well-briefed on messaging. Write and distribute media releases, statements, letters and briefings. Write and place opinion pieces and articles, in order to maintain the Welsh NHS Confederation s profile on behalf of its members. Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, briefing them as necessary, to enable us to inform the media agenda and respond quickly and effectively to media stories. Build and maintain strong relationships with communications teams in member organisations and Welsh Government communications officials Develop and maintain a strategic commnunications plan that supports the organisations objectives and annual business plan Advise colleagues on communications and media issues messages, tactics to adopt as required, to ensure that any Welsh NHS Confederation media intervention is timely, appropriate and well-informed. Monitor media interest in and coverage of - health issues, in order to identify opportunities for proactive publicity for the work of the Welsh NHS Confederation and its members. This includes the appropriate use of social media and the website. Ensure that the Welsh NHS Confederation s written and printed material is of a suitably high standard, timely, and appropriate for the context and the audience at which it is aimed. Develop knowledge and understanding of the tools and techniques that can be best used within the area of traditional and new media and share best practice with colleagues. Be responsible for the Welsh NHS Confederation s social media channels and uploading content onto the webite Ensure that all published material is consistent with the design and corporate identity guidelines Provide general communications support to the team, eg helping to produce appropriate written and printed materials, supporting major Welsh NHS Confederation events, and liaising with printers and designers producing marketing and communications materials.
3 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Extensive experience of working in a role with media and/or communications responsibilities. Well-honed writing skills, with experience of writing fast, accurate and lively copy for different audiences, sometimes under time pressure, and to convey complex issues clearly through a variety of channels Good understanding of the Welsh media, and ability to build good relationships with journalists, exercising care and discretion. Interest in health issues, the media, policy and politics. Must be willing to contribute across all the Welsh NHS Confederation s work areas. Capable of working independently. Proven ability to work with IT systems and applications, web content management and social media. Ability to ensure relevant communications are planned, systematic, consistent and of a high quality Media/political monitoring Ability to speak, and write, in Welsh is desirable SAFETY Health and Safety at Work Act The jobholder is required to take reasonable care for the safety and health of themselves and others who may be affected by their acts; and to co-ordinate with management in the promotion and maintenance of health and safety measures.
