Ceres Unified School District 2503 Lawrence Street Sponsored by: Ceres, CA Meeting Minutes May 18, 2016 Welcome Julie Lynn Martin-Borba, Collaborative Coordinator Agenda review Julie thanked the following individuals for supporting the efforts of this group and in making each meeting a success. The City of Ceres for providing the facility space for each meeting The Ceres Unified School District for providing the staff time for coordination of the Collaborative The CUSD Child Nutrition Department for providing the catering services for each meeting. The Ceres Unified Grants Department staff for countless hours toward meeting preparation and set up. School sites for providing staff time to assist with inviting parents and to attend the meetings. Local business and community representatives for attending and supporting the efforts of the City and school district in providing programs and services to all the families and children of the Ceres community. 1. Information Presentation 1. K 6 Music Productions Jessie Ceja, Coordinator, Educational Services, Ceres Unified School District Since the school year, the number of CUSD elementary music teachers has doubled and we will now have 6 music teachers during the school year. 2 new music programs have been added: Lucas Elementary will have music classes for 4 th graders as well as a 6 th grade band at Patricia K Beaver Elementary School, both starting the school year. K 3 Music lessons have increased from 2 during the school year to now 9 in the school year. 4 th 6 th grade music programs: 4 th grade general music is focused on choir and all 4 th grade students will rotate through the music program. 5 th and 6 th grades Students who wish to participate, will begin in band and instruments will be provided. 2. Visual & Preforming Arts Alissa Martin, Program Specialist, Educational Services, Ceres Unified School District 3 rd grade students were able to attend a performance of the Sierra Chamber Opera. 4 th grade students were able to attend field trips to Gallo Center of the Arts to watch a variety of plays. Mission Statement: The Ceres Community Collaborative is committed to meeting the needs of the families of Ceres and the surrounding community. We are dedicated to coordinating resources that empower and support individuals and families to learn and grow.

4 5 th grade students took a field trip to the Carnegie Arts center. 6 th grade students were able to take a field trip to UC Merced and tour the college. 3. Summer Programs Shelly Madrigal, Administrative Assistant, Ceres Unified School District ASES after school program will be available this summer for all CUSD students K 6 th grade, whether they are attending summer school or not from the hours of 2 p.m. 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. ASES will also have activities for children, including arts and crafts, outdoor activities and movie days. CUSD is providing free breakfast and free lunch to any Ceres youth under the age of 18 at elementary school sites where summer school is being offered. A two-week kinder camp program is being offered to incoming kindergarten students to prepare them with a basic understanding of classroom rules and procedures. Summer and regular school year ASES will involve an intermural sports program, such as kick ball. For more information on Summer School programs, contact the Ceres Unified School District Educational Options Department at For information about the ASES after school program, please contact the ASES main office at Project YES Dustin Pack, Administrative Assistant, Ceres Unified School District Project YES is dedicated to helping youth ages who wish to improve their lives and financial situation. This program is free and can help youth get their GED or High School Diploma. Program offers training opportunities with companies in career pathways such as: Technology, Customer Service, Retail, Working with Children, Auto Mechanics, Welding and Culinary. Youth can sign up for these programs at their office on the Hanline campus. 6 Week Boot Camp Project Yes is offering a Technology focused 6 week training program for 20 students which will include the below: 1. Website development training 2. Free laptop upon full completion of program requirements. 3. $100 per week stipend 4. Field trips to both Google and Twitter headquarters. This new boot camp will take place Monday Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students are required to attend every day, if they miss 1 day they will be dropped from the program. Project YES has a goal to serve 200 students during the school year and offer three sessions of the boot camp during the year. Youth will get paid while participating in training. The course is 6 weeks in length and is on a first-come, first-served basis. 5 Upcoming Events 1. City of Ceres: Parks and Recreation - Cambria Pollinger The City of Ceres Parks and Recreation Department has several upcoming events for the summer season. Concerts in the park 1. Every Tuesday in June and July the City will offer free concerts in Whitmore Park from the hours of 6:30 p.m. 8:30 p.m. Food and drink will be sold at the concerts. Also you can purchase a cash pass ticket which are $35 each. Every Tuesday the city will have a raffle with the cash pass tickets and the winner will receive $500 if they are at the concert, if they are not then they will receive $250. Arbor Day 1. Ceres will be holding its 22 nd Annual Arbor Day activity for the schools where students will plant 3 trees Summer and Fall Recreation 1. There are many programs the Ceres Community Center is offering this summer such as: Aquatic programs, Summer Adventure Day Camp, Kids in the Kitchen, Kidz Love Soccer, Kids Workshops, Parent and Me Ceramics for Kids and Hoopsters Youth Basketball. Smoke on the Water 1. This year the annual Smoke on the Water river event (hosted by Ceres Chamber of Commerce) will include a barbeque competition. Scholarship Opportunities 1. The City has a contract with Suzanne s Ceramics on 4 th street (Mosaic Garden Art Project) to fundraise for youth who wish to take a class at the Center but cannot afford to. Anyone can pay to paint a tile at Suzanne s then the tile will be donated to the City s parks. a. There are certain qualifications that youth must meet to determine eligibility for a scholarship. Ceres Community Center 1. The Ceres Community Center will display art work from Ceres schools - each month a different school is displayed. This month Whitmore Charter is featured. Additionally, the art work of a student from Whitmore Charter is being featured at Riverbluff Park on a large billboard. 7 CUSD Elementary Music Program Increased the number of elementary music teachers from 3 in the school year to 5 in the school year There will be 6 elementary music teachers in the school year 4th grade music at Lucas Elementary and 6th grade band at Patricia K. Beaver School will be added at the beginning of the school year K-3 General Music Classes 4th Grade General Music Class focused on Choir 5th Grade Band

15 Visiting Artists Kindergarten-6th Grade Students Student 9 What we learned from Miss Katelyn is we learned about how to draw shapes like the cone, cube, sphere and the cylinder. First we draw a circle and we shaded it like a shadow. Last, we draw the ice cream and we shaded it like the shadow of the sun and then we decorate the ice cream.
