1 Trip Details & Frequently Asked Questions Who Can Go? Christ the King is excited to offer an exciting mission trip opportunity to students completing 8 th thru 12 th grade in the spring of Each member of the church is also allowed to bring one friend (non church member) if he/she is committed to helping others as well as the mission trip teamwork activities throughout the planning process in January June When and where will the Mission trip take place? The mission trip dates are July 27 to August 1, 2014 in Birmingham, Alabama. We will leave Sunday July 27 th, travel by van and arrive at our destination in Birmingham, AL. The trip will take approximately 12 hours each way. Why Birmingham? Many people know Birmingham for its history as a city central to the early civil rights movement, but Birmingham is also known for its metal mining. Birmingham played an important role as an industrial center for iron and steel production and was once nicknamed the Steel City of the South because it is one of the only cities with all the minerals needed to make steel in one area. Visiting The Vulcan, the largest cast iron statue in the US, you can get an idea of the importance of this industry in the past and how it influences the economics of the city presently. Today Birmingham has become known as a progressive center for medical research, banking, music, technology, art, engineering and higher education. However, the city is also working to find creative solutions to serve and support a large number of residents who struggle with poverty and homelessness. How many people will go? Our registration count is flexible! At this time we have reserved 30 spots which includes 25 students, 5 chaperones. An initial deposit of $100 will be required by January 15, 2014 to reserve a spot. A second payment is due in March, with full balance being paid at the end of April (see specific dates below) What is the cost to Attend? The estimated cost per person is $ per person. See detail on next page. How will we get there? Each group is responsible for transportation to and from the site, and during the mission week. Christ the King will make arrangements for rental vans. Where do we stay? Groups are housed in a local church, school or community building. Participants need to bring their own sleeping bags, pillows and sleeping pads or air mattresses that are twin-size or smaller. All females and males sleep in separate rooms, including married adult leaders. Showers are available either on site or at a nearby location. Are the sites safe? All YouthWorks housing facilities are secure and all ministry opportunities are designed with students' safety in mind. All YouthWorks staff are CPR certified and First Aid trained. Will we be working with other groups? Unless our group reserves all of a week's spaces (usually 50-72), our group will have the wonderful opportunity of serving alongside other Christians. Our youth will be divided into small teams and joined with students from other groups to do ministry. An adult from our group will always be joined with our students. Our students will have the great joy of getting to know others as they serve Jesus together. 1
2 What type of ministry will we do? Every YouthWorks site is unique. Our large and small urban mission sites partner with ministries that serve those in need. Each week offers a variety of services that might include working with homeless shelters, elderly homes, children's programs, home rehab ministries and more. Bring your students on a mission adventure this summer and see life change firsthand. To learn more about the specific ministry site and Youthworks, go to Estimated 2014 Mission Trip Cost Per Person Youthworks Registration Fee. $ 269 Transportation (2 Vans, includes gas). $ Total.. $ Your final cost (after Christ the King contribution) $ *Costs may be subject to slight change dependent on number of students that sign up *Additional costs to student includes is 2 meals (1 on the way there, 1 on the way back) and any souvenirs or misc from sight-seeing. January 15 - $100 deposit due Important Dates February 13 Final count due to YouthWorks. No refunds given after this point. Therefore if participant cancels after this date, payment in full will still be due. March 6 Mid payment due (40% of total) April 26 Balance due 2
3 What is YouthWorks? YouthWorks' purpose is to provide life-changing, Christ-Centered mission trips. This is our reason for being. We create extraordinarily fun and significant mission adventures, targeted to the needs and capabilities of youth, ages By crossing borders of race and culture, and by placing students outside their comfort zones, we find something wonderful happens: God gets their attention! Without the distractions of everyday life, God uses YouthWorks to work in the lives of thousands of teenagers. By attempting to be faithful to our purpose, we find God is also at work in each of the communities we serve. Yea God! Youthworks firmly believes there is a need for people to have their homes painted and rehabilitated; a need for children to learn about the Bible through music, stories and games; and a need to serve existing community ministries. We know that paint on houses will eventually chip off, and that stories and games may be forgotten in time, but the relationships you develop with community members will create a vehicle for ministry to occur for a long time in the future. Come ready to experience the joy of being the hands and feet of Christ! Who leads a YouthWorks trip? YouthWorks has four staff members at each mission site. They are responsible for everything including food, lodging, ministry opportunities, work projects and supplies. They also lead cultural evening activities and nightly club times. Our staff is mission hearted, well-trained and eager to serve! Christ the King will provide chaperones. Why YouthWorks? They are All About Youth They love teenagers! Doing ministry with them is their sole purpose. YouthWorks is unique in the fact that they are a ministry whose work is missions and they seek to do excellent youth ministry. They are Affordable Let s face it, short term missions can be costly. Since their inception, their goal has been to provide the most affordable, life-changing mission experience possible. They are Personal YouthWorks is committed to creating a close-knit, safe place for teens to be teens and communities to be blessed. Mission trips are limited to groups of 50 to 72 people per week because they want every person on a YouthWorks trip to be known and know others. They are Committed To Communities Year after year YouthWorks continues to minister through local ministry partners. It is their desire to walk alongside friends in ministry, helping support the kingdom building work they do daily in their own communities. 3
