1 Medication Assisted Treatment Conference starting a common conversation WHEN: September :00am 4:00pm You are invited to attend a 3-day / 2-part training event, September 8-10, introducing best practices for the use of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) in working with alcohol and opioid addicted persons. This training is specifically designed for substance abuse treatment professionals, judges and specialty court personnel, and doctors, physician s assistants, and nurses. WHERE: Holiday Inn 940 W. Dr. David Mee-Lee will present September 8 & 9, covering topics including: treatment planning using MAT, ASAM Criteria, monitoring MAT in a drug court setting, collaborative care, and strategies for working across disciplines (court personnel, treatment professionals, and medical community). Dr. R. Corey Waller will present September 10, covering topics including: A history and overview of MAT, MDCH s new MAT guidelines, engaging complex care patients, and new regulatory requirements for office based addiction treatment. Additionally, small group break-out sessions will take place in the afternoon. This is a unique opportunity to learn from two notable leaders in the addictions field, and to engage in a common conversation about addiction and MAT, with professionals from different disciplines, all of whom share a goal of preventing and reducing the impact of addiction in our communities. Seating is limited to 125 people, and approximately apportioned for the following service providers from within the Lakeshore Regional Partnership: (45) substance abuse clinicians; (15) staff from Methadone Clinics; (10) doctors and/or physician s assistants; (5) Pharmacists. Additionally, 50 seats are reserved for specialty court teams from across Michigan. 4 How to Develop Collaborative, Accountable Treatment Plans that Improve Recovery and Criminal Justice Outcomes; and Balance Psychosocial Recovery and Medication Assisted Treatment David Mee-Lee, M.D. September 8-9, 2015 Grand Haven Spring Lake Holiday Inn Workshop Description To achieve outcomes of improved recovery and increased public safety and decreased legal recidivism and crime, all stakeholders need mutually trusting teamwork to expect and provide accountable treatment. This presentation will highlight what the appropriate role of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is in addiction treatment and drug court programs. It will provide the opportunity to practice assessment and priority identification, and translate that into a workable, accountable treatment plan that drug court and other criminal justice personnel can trust. Reference will be made to The ASAM Criteria assessment dimensions to help organize assessment and treatment data. MAT is intended to balance psychosocial interventions and promote recovery. However in real life in some opioid treatment services, the client is not even aware of what is on their treatment plan; is more focused on medication without full recovery treatment; and is even using other drugs with little apparent interest in recovery. This workshop will also discuss what we really mean by recovery and good outcomes in addiction treatment. It will improve court personnel s understanding on what to expect from ethical and effective addiction treatment. It will also improve participants' skills in how to carefully assess clients in a multidimensional way; develop a focused, effective and efficient individualized treatment plan; and ensure that MAT actually improves recovery and criminal justice outcomes without enabling continued use of addictive substances. Educational Objectives: Participants will: 1. Identify the role of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) in addiction treatment and in drug court programs to promote recovery. 2. Apply principles of individualized treatment planning to engage clients in recovery treatment not just focused on medication. 3. Demonstrate how to communicate the treatment plan and progress to criminal justice personnel in a way that builds trust between courts and providers. 4. Discuss systems issues, and policy and procedures that improve teamwork, recovery and public safety outcomes. Workshop Presenter: David Mee-Lee, M.D. is a board-certified psychiatrist, and is certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). Based in Davis, California, USA, he trains and consults both nationally and internationally. Dr. Mee-Lee is Chief Editor of the American Society of Addiction Medicine's (ASAM) Criteria - Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related and Co-Occurring Conditions; and is Senior Vice President of The Change Companies. He is also a Senior Fellow, Justice Programs Office (JPO) of the School of Public Affairs (SPA) at American University, Washington, DC. Dr. Mee Lee has over thirty years experience in person centered treatment and program development for people with co occurring mental health and substance use conditions.
