21 Non-Directive eer workers are trained to use active listening as their rimary tool. hey may use a problem solving approach and they might xpress their own views and experiences but they are not here to give advice or tell people what to do. eople can find their own solutions and understandings given ime within a supportive and interested relationship.
22 erson-centred very individual is different and it is important for eer workers to avoid assuming that they can nderstand others solely with reference to their wn experience. ll support needs to be based on the individual ituation and the individual s goals and supports vailable to them.
23 Progressive t is tempting for peer workers to fall into a friendship ather than a professional role. However, friends are ery different and need to be enabled through the upport rather than provided by peer workers. t can be helpful to set a time limit for peer support so hat both parties are aware of the need to move orward and work towards goals outside the service
24 r Support around the World eer support is the biggest and growing - new role in the US and the UK. eer support workers are developing across Europe (we have trained peers Italy, Belgium, offered support for training in Sweden, Norway, France, witzerland) lso developing in less developed countries like Uganda, India, and in apan, Hong Kong and Asia where we have offered support and training. eer workers have developed separately in Canada, Australia and New ealand. here are national accreditation systems in Australia and New Zealand and S. Local accreditation in UK and in Italy.
25 ritical questions in developing peer support here will they be employed - what sort of services and what ind of roles? hat training will they be offered a nationally accredited raining course or locally determined? hat sort of career pathway? hat sort of support and supervision will be provided? hat will you do about other staff with lived experience are hey peers too?
26 Finally t is well worth investing in Peer support hey really do drive change Recovery focused change in services nd improve the experience and outcomes of people using services hey are not a cheap option
