MS: THE FACTS Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S. and 2.1 million worldwide. MS is the No.1 disabling disease among young adults in the U.S. We are people who want to do something about ms now About MS /// Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving. Every hour in the U.S., someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S., and 2.1 million worldwide. About the National MS Society /// The National MS Society helps people affected by MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, and providing programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. In 2009 alone, through our national office and 50-state network of chapters, we devoted over $132 million to programs that enhanced more than one million lives. To move us closer to a world free of MS, the Society also invested nearly $36 million to support 375 research projects around the world. the Southern Calif The Southern California & Nevada Chapter reaches out to nearly 19,000 people living with MS and their loved ones including more than 4,000 Nevadans. Approximately 80% of Chapter s income is devoted to research for better treatments and a cure as well as programs and services to help our local MS communities, while 20% is invested in support services such as fundraising and Society management. 2 Bike MS 2011: Nevada Sponsorship Proposal
3 2011 Proposal BIKE MS: THE FACTS $80 Million was raised by Bike MS in 2009 $800 Million has been rasied since it s inception in 1980 demographics 66% Male ABOUT BIKE MS /// Established in 1980, the National MS Society s Bike MS Ride is the country s largest organized charity bicycling event series. Between March and November, nearly 100 cycling events are offered by National MS Society chapters. The Bike MS Rides come in a variety of formats, including one-day rides, two-day rides and cross-state happenings. The National MS Society s Bike MS Rides are an opportunity for a scenic ride, a good time, and a healthy challenge. It is also a means to help the local community, and more than 400,000 Americans with MS and their loved ones who live with this unpredictable disease. Nearly 100,000 people ride each year, from corporate leaders to friends and neighbors. These cyclists secure pledges from more than two million contributors. Last year, cyclists raised nearly $80 million to support MS research and programs delivered by the Society s 50-state network of chapters. Since the series began as one ride in Minnesota in 1980, cyclists have raised nearly $786 million to support MS. 34% FEMALE 73% college graduate or higher 38% have a total household income of $100k + BIKE MS: Vegas challenge /// The Bike MS: Vegas Challenge takes place Saturday and Sunday, November 12 & 13, This year s event will have multiple route options to satisfy all levels of cyclists. Participants may opt for one or two days of riding, from 30 to 160 miles. The fully supported ride takes cyclists on an unforgettable journey. The route starts and finishes in Las Vegas. Cyclists will enjoy fantastic, challenging rides through Red Rock Canyon and Lake Mead. They ll also enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of the Las Vegas strip.
