6 Barriers or excuses? to collecting data Quantitative evidence Perception that data are flawed It s not relevant It s out of date Qualitative data Misunderstanding the numbers are too small that s just one person s story
7 Quantitative evidence 1 Allows you to make comparisons 2 Allows you to generalise 3 Allows you to see changes over time 4 Allows you to ask how typical is this? Numbers need to be robustly defined and collected Real time feedback Identify a small number of measures
8 Qualitative evidence 1 Stories give insight behind the numbers 2 Allows you to unpick what is happening 3 Allows you to understand the relationship between things that are going on 4 Helps you to understand the meaning for patients One story is enough (Robert Francis)
