1 Project Manager Mental Health Job Description and Application Pack Groundswell is seeking an experienced professional for the new role of Project Manager Mental Health. This is an opportunity to develop a new and important area of work for Groundswell, a growing and dynamic charity which is committed to innovative and inclusive solutions to tackling homelessness. Groundswell have had considerable success in recent years through developing our award winning Homeless Health Peer Advocacy service supporting people experiencing homelessness to access physical healthcare services. We now have an opportunity to develop this work to focus on homeless people s mental health support. This new role of Project Manager Mental Health will oversee the development and delivery of HHPA Plus, a new project is aimed at supporting homeless people to improve their wellbeing. You will be responsible for designing, delivering and evaluating a high quality and innovative project to target, to time and to budget, and managing a team of peer advocates volunteers and staff with personal experience of homelessness. You will be responsible for running a peer-led advocacy service supporting homeless people to access mental health services; design and delivery of a new Building Resilience Training Programme in partnership with the Mental Health Foundation; and design of Mental Health Promotion In-Reach sessions for peer advocates to deliver in homelessness services. You will have experience of successful project management and knowledge of mental health issues and the issues affecting homeless people. You will have the ability to get things done in a busy, friendly and inclusive office. You will be able to relate to, and communicate with, all of Groundswell s key stakeholders. We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from people with personal experience of homelessness. If you would like to discuss this role before applying then please contact Kate Bowgett, Groundswell s Director of Advocacy, on or Kate.Bowgett@groundswell.org.uk About HHPA Homeless Health Peer Advocacy- HHPA. Groundswell s HHPA service offers one-toone support to people experiencing homelessness to make and attend health appointments. Focused on practical support, such as paying travel fares, reminders and accompaniment to appointments, the service also builds the skills, confidence and knowledge to enable clients to continue to independently access services. Support is provided by peer advocates - who are volunteers and staff with personal experience of homelessness. With a team of over twenty peer advocates we deliver approximately 3,000 engagements each year across nine central London boroughs. We are currently exploring opportunities to extend this work across England. Groundswell Project Manager 1/7
2 About HHPA Plus HHPA Plus is a new Groundswell project aimed at providing homeless people in London with peer support to access mental health services, and training to build confidence and wellbeing independently. This project has been funded by City Bridge Trust and the Bupa Foundation. Initially a three-year pilot with the aim of developing a sustainable, commissionable model. HHPA Plus Project Outcomes 1. Homeless people will have improved access to mental health services. 2. Homeless people will have improved knowledge of mental health issues. 3. Homeless people have improved confidence in dealing with mental health and wellbeing. 4. Volunteers with experience of homelessness will have improved employability. 5. Services have increased understanding of homeless people s mental health issues. HHPA Plus contains the following project elements: Mental Health Peer Training. All our peers have lived experience of homelessness. They go through an intensive six week training programme to deliver our work. You will create additional bespoke Mental Health training sessions focusing on: common and severe conditions, treatments, services and legislation; skills for working with people with mental health issues including managing anxiety, responding sensitively and effectively in a crisis and risk assessment. Mental Health Advocacy. Delivering a service where Groundswell peer volunteers meet homeless people to support them to engage with mental health services. In addition to providing practical support, such as travel fares, reminders and accompaniment to appointments; peers also build the confidence and knowledge to enable clients to continue accessing health services independently. Building Resilience Programme. In collaboration with the Mental Health Foundation you will co-create a bespoke training programme for homeless clients aimed at building resilience and improving well-being. Teaching skills and knowledge on how to achieve and maintain good mental health. This will be co-facilitated by professionals and peers. Mental Health Promotion Sessions. You will design events facilitated by Groundswell peers at homeless hostels or day centres aimed at building relationships with clients, raising awareness of mental health issues and bringing in Health Professionals directly to run taster sessions. Psychologically Informed Environment. Groundswell is working with The Integrate Movement to review existing working practices and upskill all staff to increase mental health knowledge and expertise within the team, enabling us to deliver a trauma informed support environment. Building on our existing good practice such as clinical supervision for all delivery teams and meaningful involvement processes. Groundswell Project Manager 2/7
3 About Groundswell Groundswell is a registered charity (no ) that exists to enable homeless and vulnerable people to take more control of their lives, have a greater influence on services and to play a fuller role in our community. Our work is based around a set of core beliefs that see homeless people at the heart of solutions to tackling homelessness. Our largest area of work is around health and homelessness with peer volunteers accompanying homeless people to health appointments. We operate from a busy, inclusive office in Vauxhall with 20 staff along with around forty volunteers - with an income of approximately 850k. In 2016 we celebrated our 20 th birthday and were declared Overall Winners of the Kings Fund GSK Impact Award. Our Strategic Vision Health First! has three key priorities: 1. To increase the scale and scope of our Homeless Health Peer Advocacy service by: Geography expand into new boroughs, exploring models for national replication. Scope explore wider health issues, including substance misuse and mental health. Practice developing a broader range of peer based approaches, beyond advocacy. 2. To further develop our Insight & Action Programme of participatory action research. 3. To develop Groundswell as a healthier and more sustainable organisation. Current Groundswell projects include: Insight & Action. Groundswell engages in a range of Participatory Action Research (PAR) tools to gain insight into the realities of homelessness and deliver positive social change. PAR is research with people rather than research on people. As a research approach, it is not just concerned with collecting data but also with processes of empowerment and transformation. We have been funded by Trust for London to run a project that discovers and shares cuttingedge insight into the health inequalities faced by people experiencing homelessness in London; and crucially, to develop achievable solutions to reduce health inequalities for homeless people and make vital savings to public money. Groundswell s Core Beliefs: The whole community benefits when we effectively tackle homelessness and social exclusion. Inclusive solutions! The only way to genuinely tackle homelessness and social exclusion is by utilising the knowledge and expertise of people affected by these issues. We believe in people! People are society s most valuable resource, and everyone has the capacity to make a contribution. There is no Them & Us only Us! Groundswell brings everyone together to create effective solutions. Involvement works! When everyone is involved, the process creates more effective services and enables people to regain their independence. Groundswell Project Manager 3/7
