1 Special points of interest: In this issue: Ernesto Castillo- Coordinator of the Year Bill Cosby Allegations of Sexually Assaulting 17 Women Gets Public Talking News from the Director Thanks Coordinators for Making A Difference Moving from Bystander to Allies Thank God I m Feeling Great Scheduled Training Dates December 2014 Volume 9, Issue 3 To Protect Office of Victim Assistance & Safe Environment Advent comes from a Latin word that means preparation for the birth of our Lord. While we wait, we recall that Jesus has already come as our Mesiah and that as a faithful community he will return. We believe that he comes to us in our waiting. During this time waiting and our HOPE requires our full attention and all of our patience. We can share this hope with those who are suffering from abuse. Many times victims of abuse lose their hope because of the crimes that have been committed upon them by those they loved and trusted. Advent is the greatest time that we all can join as a community to reach out and share our journey of hope to survivors of abuse. We can give the greatest gift this season by giving our service. Agencies that support children and adults who have been abused are always in need of our services. Here are a few places to contact if you are interested in volunteering this season. 2 Thanks Coordinators for Making A Difference! God our Father, thank you for sending your Son to us. The compassion that all OVASE Coordinators show to the people we serve is an inspiration for our community. We know how important it can be for the adults and children who may be victims of abuse to hear your message of love and support. Your words and actions go a long way toward helping them keep their dignity and know that we can end abuse. It is important for all of you to know that your hard work and dedication to this ministry hasn t gone unnoticed. Thank you OVASE Coordinators for all you do! Many thanks to Ernesto Castillo who has been chosen as the OVASE Coordinator of the Year. All of his hard work since 2011 have proven that he is a vital leader in our community as well as his commitment has ensured that Prince of Peace is promoting a safe environment where our children can be safe from abuse. Mr. Castillo is an inspiration to all of the adults and children throughout the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
3 What would you do if you see a drunk women at a party being led to a bedroom by one of the other party goers? What about when you hear demeaning comments about women or other groups of people and witness harassing behavior? Would you step in or say anything? One day I was confronted with this exact scenario. While visiting a local restaurant, a women and man walking out were arguing and the man became very loud and insulted the woman. As they walked down the sidewalk everyone in the restaurant stared at the couple whispering about them. All of a sudden the man strikes the women slapping her across the face. I ran out and my husband quickly told me to stay out of it afraid I would be hurt. I approached the women who was crying and the man quickly grabbed her by the arm. I asked her if she was ok. The husband responded, we re fine! I looked at him straight in the eyes and said I m speaking to her. I repeated, are you ok, can I help you? She said no and got in the car and they drove off. I called 911 and reported the crime and gave the license plate #. I never knew what happened to the women, but felt that I could not just stand by and do nothing and was very bothered that many people did just that. Although I would never suggest anyone putting themselves in danger, we can all stand up and become an ally in a similar situation. Calling police in this situation is always the best option. One thing I consistently hear from victims of abuse is that they feel alone and that no one care. I felt that day that my message to her was that she matters and that we care about her safety. During this time of celebration let us all pray for those who may be suffering from abuse. Here are a few agencies who will be available for assistance with Victim Assistance Ministries: Office of Victim Assistance & Safe Environment / Department of Family & Protective Services / Family Justice Center San Antonio Rape Crisis Center
4 Gregory Jean Jr. had been captive for four years by his father and stepmother. It all began when Gregory did not return after a visit to his father and his mom lost contact. She reported the child had not been returned as scheduled to authorities. After four years, last week Gregory friend requested his mother through Facebook. He wrote that he was being abused and sent her the address where he was being held captive. Gregory also downloaded an app called Magic Jack to call his mom and helped police find him being held behind the wall of an upstairs closet. His father and stepmother are now in jail facing charges of child cruelty and false imprisonment. After reuniting with his mother Gregory told reporters, Thank God I m feeling great. In the past two weeks at least 17 women have come forward to accuse Bill Cosby of sexually assaulting them. The alleged incidents occurred from 1960 to There is a pattern in these women's claims that include being invited to spend time with him for help in their career and then drugged, manipulated and then sexually assaulted. These women fell into the trap that Bill Cosby was a trusting and loving man that they could trust. Many of the women feared that no one would believe their stories. Although many opinions differ if these stories are true, the fact remain that these headlines have the public speaking about the issue of sexual assault. This is a teachable moment that we can utilize to help out children and other adults realize the importance of supporting survivors. Encouraging females and males to identify the abuse patterns and get help if they feel they have been victimized. There is always Hope. If you or someone you know is a survivor and want help contact OVASE for free counseling and support at (210)

This is a perfect time to reflect on the year and to reconnect with our commitment to protect children. As the Safe Environment Coordinator it is your responsibility to educate and inform others on abuse prevention. Take this time to remember the goal of our ministry; to protect children from harm. That is an incredible yet overwhelming task. Take the time to look into a child s eyes and see the innocence, joy, and hope during this Christmas season. An abused child loses that hope, loses that spark that you see in another child. That is why we do this ministry. To remind adults that children are children; they deserve respect and protection. Take the time to look at a Nativity scene. Reflect on the baby Jesus laying there being loved and protected by Mary, Joseph, and the Wise Men. That love and worship should be towards every child. Though there is only one Jesus, every child has an opportunity to do great things and do the work of Christ. That is why we do this ministry. To give children the opportunity to grow, to be loved, and to have a future. schools; you also teach me. I ve learned so much through listening to all of you. During 2015, the office will be reaching out to all of you in order to reconnect. We want to hear about your successes and your struggles. More importantly we want to know how we can help. I would like to share my appreciation for the job that you have done. This ministry can be taxing but you have made the safety of children your priority. The Archdiocese of San Antonio continues to grow and flourish because of your work in this ministry. We are all working towards a goal where everyone is safe from harm. Thank you, As I reflect on this year, I see my accomplishments and my failures. I know I can do better as the director to this ministry and my promise to you is that I will do better. I learn and grow through all of you. You not only teach those at your parishes and
