WHO CARES? CHARITY, JUSTICE & THE QUEST FOR THE COMMON GOOD Marquette University s Mission Week 2015 Planning Guide and Review
This guide provides an overview of Marquette University s Mission Week partnership with CRS with the hope that you will develop a similar program or partnership on your campus. What is Mission Week? Each year, Marquette University devotes a week to the exploration of its Catholic and Jesuit mission. The week s activities offer all members of the Marquette community (students, faculty, staff, alumni/ae, the Jesuit community, and Milwaukee community members) the opportunity to reflect deeply on the Catholic, Jesuit mission that animates Marquette. Mission Week is a time to reflect on the why of Marquette: why we teach, learn, explore, and serve the common good, why the integration of faith and justice is fundamental to our identity, and why a Jesuit university can make a lasting difference in the world. Mission Week involves all of the colleges of the university, and its worship, educational and service programs. Mission Week provides Marquette community members with the resources to integrate and apply the Catholic mission of our university in our daily life and work all year long. Mission Week 2015 was a partnership between Marquette and Catholic Relief Services, the official international humanitarian aid agency of the U.S. Catholic Bishops. Who Cares? Charity, Justice and the Quest for the Common Good Marquette University Mission Week 2015 a partnership with Catholic Relief Services The Mission Week 2015 theme, Who Cares? Charity, Justice and the Quest for the Common Good, guided our week of activities to reflect on how the Marquette community, can compassionately respond to the needs of our sisters and brothers locally and internationally. Aware that we are part of a wider community, Marquette partnered with Catholic Relief Services, an international powerhouse that serves in countries around the globe to meet human needs and uphold the dignity of every person. For this celebration and exploration, accomplished CRS professionals from a variety of disciplines and locales joined us to together explore the frontiers of head and heart needed to create a more just and humane world. 3 GOALS & TARGET AUDIENCES Core Mission Week Goals: 1. Deepen the campus community s understanding of the university s mission through the practice of religion, expression of faith, and work of building a more just and humane world. 2. Increase awareness of CRS and how CRS mission, guiding principles, and impact align with the mission, vision, and guiding values of Marquette. Student Goals: 1. Create lasting positive impressions that are associated with CRS Provide fun and relevant activities including opportunities to volunteer, make new friends, and join a team with similar passions who are committed to doing good in the world. 2. Inspired through the work of CRS and interactions with CRS professionals Share stories about CRS work and impact. Speakers should be accomplished and represent a variety of focus areas and serve as professional role models to students. 3. Share ways to get involved with CRS on campus Promote the CRS student ambassador program, encourage students to apply for internships with CRS, and endorse CRS prayer and reflection resources for use in prayer groups and masses. Faculty Member Goals: 1. Integrate CRS materials into classroom activities Connect faculty with CRS teaching resources (CRS Global Learning Commons) to disseminate best practices developed by CRS experts and to promote CRS as a model organization. 2. Explore opportunities to share knowledge, research, and resources Facilitate interaction between the CRS university team and Marquette faculty members to partner leading scholars with practitioners or to find ways for CRS and Marquette to share and leverage resources. Staff & Community Member Goals: 1. Connect with local organizations who can promote CRS Engage groups such as the archdiocese, local parishes, and interfaith groups as a reminder of the work CRS does and how they can use their influence to promote and advocate for CRS. 2. Encourage donations to support CRS or local CRS initiatives Make a concerted effort to engage local donors of CRS and encourage community participants to support CRS with fiscal donations. 3. Explore the question of what it means for us to build a more just and humane world locally Invite community members and nonprofit organizations to participate in a conversation on how we can be inspired by CRS international impact to make a distinctive local impact. 3
IMPACT Marquette University has used the model presented below to facilitate growth from an initial awareness of CRS up to endorsing CRS. This is part of an ongoing plan to advance Marquette as a university partner of CRS. Each of the sections below describes how Mission Week 2015 advanced these four key types of interaction with CRS. Transformation Endorsement Engagement Awareness Awareness Mission Week generated a significant increase in awareness of CRS on Marquette s campus. To aid with the awareness success, Marquette s Office of Marketing and Communication developed professional quality marketing and promotional materials. These items included a tri-fold program, website, notices, posters, and print and online advertisements. CRS name, logo, and impact were prominent in all marketing and promotional efforts. Through the Mission Week marketing and promotional efforts, essentially every student (11,700) and faculty and staff member (2,700) were exposed to Mission Week publicity and CRS messaging. Additionally, a significant number of Marquette alumni, Milwaukee community members, and donors also received materials that prominently featured the Mission Week partnership with CRS. Engagement The Mission Week events provided ways for everyone interested in participating to be able to participate in a way that was both meaningful and personally relevant. The events and activities provided opportunities for participants to connect with CRS through general information about CRS mission, activities, and impact; expressions of faith including mass and prayer; events and speakers targeted to specific academic disciplines; artistic expressions of faith and service; community discussions on critical topics such as charity, faith, and racism; and service projects. Approximately 3,000 people (students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and community members) were engaged as active participants in the Mission Week activities. 4
Transformation With the many activities that were a part of Mission Week, many people took advantage of the opportunity to participate in multiple events or participated in one event that planted a seed of transformation (e.g., changing the way one sees the world, the development of valuable skills, building lasting friendships with others committed to CRS mission, or making strong emotional connections to CRS mission, work, and impact). This experience is now a part of students broader Marquette experience which they will carry forward with them into their future careers, service, and philanthropy. Endorsement The Mission Week partnership with CRS successfully leveraged the Marquette mission and brand to promote the mission and work of CRS. By partnering with CRS for Mission Week, Marquette offered a strong institutional endorsement of CRS. On an individual level, several additional endorsements are worth noting: President Lovell publicly endorsed CRS. Interim Provost Margaret Callahan endorsed faculty partnering on research with CRS in a meeting highlighting ways for faculty to engage CRS in their teaching and research. The Office of Mission and Ministry endorsed CRS to the university community as an organization to engage with to live out and experience a deepening of faith. The Center for Peacemaking endorsed CRS as a model partner organization working to solve the most pressing issues among those with the most need in the world. Faculty members who hosted CRS speakers in their classrooms and encouraged students to participate in Mission Week activities endorsed CRS to their students as an organization to learn from if they want to make a difference in their respective fields. 5
ACTIVITIES RECAP Social Innovation Conference Inspired by CRS life-changing work around the globe, we hosted a one-day conference to examine how we can make a distinctive impact on the issue of racism in Milwaukee. The conference brought together community members and organizations from across Milwaukee to look at how we are using and how we can use social innovation tools to address racism. Keynote Addresses Opening Keynote by Dr. Carolyn Woo, President and CEO of CRS. Student Keynote by CRS celebrity spokespersons Catherine Hicks and Olympic gold medalist Bonnie Blair Closing Keynote by Dr. Vanessa Tobin, CRS senior technical advisor for water supply, sanitation and resources development, and Dr. Mwayabo Jean Claude Kazadi, CRS senior technical advisor for HIV care. Classroom Visits Throughout the week CRS professionals visited classrooms in many of Marquette s colleges including Arts & Sciences, Communication, Engineering, Health Sciences, Nursing and the Graduate School. Presentation topics ranged from CRS On the Margins: Vulnerable Populations to Supporting Access for Quality Education for All to Water and Sanitation as Justice and Community Issues. Faculty Research Dr. David Leege, director of university engagement and research with CRS, participated in a meeting with all of Marquette s deans to discuss how CRS and Marquette can build research partnerships. Dr. Leege also met with faculty members and graduate students who are engaged in research in areas that CRS works to explore potential collaboration. Dissemination Campus ministers and student development personnel from local colleges, universities, and high schools were invited to attend the CRS Across Campuses event in which we presented on Marquette s CRS student ambassador program and campus partnership with CRS and CRS Midwest University Relationship Manger presented on how these groups can become more involved with CRS. 6
Mass & Reflections Mission Week began with a special celebration at one of the most popular masses on campus. There were also morning reflections each day of Mission Week and the week-long celebration concluded with the Examen, an Ignatian practice. Faith and the Arts We prominently displayed the CRS Solidarity Walk canvas photos and reflection questions in a way that the images served as a back drop for the reception area after events but also served as a standalone prayer activity. We also had Mary Pimmel-Freeman paint a portrait of Marquette Alumnus James Foley and Holly Schapker s Adsum Prints were on display throughout the week. Volunteering Event Over 200 students, staff, and community members gathered to volunteer for the CRS and Stop Hunger Now Helping Hands program. They packaged over 25,000 meals that were sent to aid CRS projects in Burkina Faso. Receptions, Dinners, and Luncheons Mission Week includes a fundraising dinner to which the university invites donors as well as students, faculty, and staff who helped with planning activities. Additionally, a reception followed each of the keynote addresses and the CRS professionals participated in luncheons and dinners with student, university, and community leaders. Marketing & Promotion Materials developed for Mission Week included a website, printed schedule, campaign, and print and online advertisements. Ads were placed on campus TV, in the student lounges and campus coffee shops, in the campus paper and the Catholic Herald, on public radio, and on Facebook. The CRS student ambassadors also distributed Be the Relief t-shirts. 7
MISSION WEEK PLANNING GUIDE Getting Started (1+ year in advance) Identify the Mission Week equivalent on your campus or if you would create an entirely new event. Identify current CRS supporters on campus and develop leadership support for a high-profile event. Develop a rapport with your regional CRS contacts and share your interest in hosting a week-long CRS-focused event. Select date(s) for events to take place and reserve necessary rooms and spaces on campus. Next Steps (1 year to 6 months in advance) Determine the scope of events (keynotes, masses, volunteering, classroom visits, luncheons and dinners, conference, etc.) and type of expertise to focus on (agriculture, education, emergency response, food and hunger, health, HIV and AIDS, microfinance, water and sanitation, etc.) Apply for and secure funding; if it is preferred, involve the donor(s) in designing the event. Identify and secure necessary university and CRS resources for success. Develop a university planning committee that includes representatives from the administration and selected colleges/departments to plan events for their students and faculty. Regularly engage your regional CRS contact(s) and/or CRS University contact(s). Ensuring a Successful Event (6 months in advance to the event) Finalize the scope and breadth of events; secure commitments for CRS professionals and representatives. Meet monthly with your university planning committee to share key planning updates and discuss any challenges with planning or scheduling events. Work closely with your university s marketing team to develop professional quality marketing materials and advertisements for the events. Work closely with your university s special events team to ensure appropriate space setup and utilization, technology, and catering for each event. Work closely with your university s fundraising department if your event will have a fundraising component. Regularly engage with your regional CRS contact(s) and/or CRS University contact(s). 7
