Voluntary and Community Sector VOLUNTEERS WEEK 1 ST 7 TH JUNE 2015 Volunteers Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK. At Swale CVS we are holding a thank you evening for all our drivers, befrienders and office volunteers who provide a great service to our organisation. During the week we will be promoting volunteering/events on Twitter and would love to hear of anything that is being planned in Swale so we can promote on your behalf. We will also be joining the NCVO Twitter party which will provide national coverage for your organisation. If you are doing anything special for your volunteers please inform Julia Watling on julia.watling@swalecvs.co.uk or phone SCEN Contact: Swale CVS zoe.deveson@swalecvs.co.uk

Official Opening Hospices of Hope would like to welcome everyone to the official opening of its 20th charity shop and tea room in Preston Street, Faversham on Tuesday 2nd June at 12pm. The Hospices founder and Executive Director, Graham Perolls OBE will be attending the event and the shop will be opened by Emily Firmin, whose father Peter, was the co-creator of Bagpuss - Emily played the part of Emily in the TV series and the charity are honoured to have been given the rights to use the Bagpuss name and character in our fundraising efforts. Hospices of Hope are the leading palliative care charity in South Eastern Europe. We believe that everyone deserves the best possible care at the end of life. But, in developing countries like Romania, Serbia or Moldova many patients still die in pain, without being offered any physical, spiritual or emotional comfort, with struggling healthcare systems that offer little or nothing in the way of hospice care. We are dedicated to improving the lives of adults and children with terminal or life-limiting illnesses in these countries. The charity is indebted to our volunteers who work tirelessly in all our shops, however we still need more! If you have any time to spare please contact the shop at Faversham on Tel:

Health Information Your NHS Health Check guide The NHS Health Check is a sophisticated check of your heart health. Aimed at adults in England aged 40 to 74, it checks your vascular or circulatory health and works out your risk of developing some of the most disabling but preventable illnesses. Think of your NHS Health Check as being your "midlife MOT". It checks that some of your body's most important systems are all running smoothly. Among other things, your blood pressure, cholesterol, and BMI will all be checked and your results given to you. Crucially, your NHS Health Check can detect potential problems before they do real damage. Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia. The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented. Your NHS Health Check will assess your risk of developing these health problems and give you personalised advice on how to reduce it. It's free of charge, including any follow-up tests or appointments. Thousands of people have already had an NHS Health Check. They are now armed with information and support to reduce their risk of developing heart and vascular problems. Why not join them? Together, the vascular conditions identified by the NHS Health Check are the biggest cause of preventable deaths in the UK, affecting more than 4 million people. Every year, the NHS Health Check is expected to help: save 650 lives prevent 1,600 heart attacks and strokes prevent 4,000 people from developing type 2 diabetes earlier detect at least 20,000 cases of type 2 diabetes or kidney disease If you want to avoid being a statistic, it's worth making an appointment for an NHS Health Check as soon as you get your invitation. Find out more about why you should have an NHS Health Check.

Funding The Bupa UK Foundation s purpose is to help people live longer, healthier, happier lives by funding practical projects and initiatives which aim to tackle critical challenges in health and social care, deliver public benefit and make a direct impact on people s health and wellbeing. In 2015, the Bupa UK Foundation s first year of operation, 1 million is being made available for grants. We will announce the theme of our first funding round and open for applications shortly and expect to award our first grants in the summer. The Bupa UK Foundation has a strong interest in tackling health conditions that can affect everyone, including heart health, cancer, type 2 diabetes and dementia. We will also focus on important factors that underpin good health, such as mental health, ageing and wellness, the prevention of long-term conditions, and behaviour change to improve health and wellbeing. We will offer grants through clearly defined funding programmes each focussed on a different theme. We are not currently accepting applications, but details of funding programmes for which we are seeking expressions of interest will be posted on our website shortly.

Funding HLF Offers Funding for First World War: Then and Now Projects The Heritage Lottery Fund reminds not-for-profit organisations in the UK that it has funding to support community projects in the UK which explore, conserve and share the heritage of the First World War. The First World War Fund: Then and Now aims to mark the heritage of the First World War by supporting community projects in the UK which explore, conserve and share the heritage of the First World War. Not-for-profit organisations in the UK with a bank account and a constitution can apply for grants of between 3,000 and 10,000. This includes a wide range of organisations, such as charities, trusts, clubs, interest groups, faith groups, history groups, community and voluntary groups, social enterprises, youth groups, schools and colleges. The projects should enable communities to understand more about the heritage of the First World War and benefit a wide range of people. In particular, HLF is keen to support projects that help young people (11 to 25 years) take an active part in the Centenary commemorations. To be eligible, projects should have not started yet, last for no more than two years, and achieve one or more of the following outcomes: Outcomes for people people will have learnt about heritage; developed skills; changed their attitudes and/or behaviour; and volunteered time. Outcomes for heritage heritage will be in better condition; better interpreted and explained; identified and recorded. Outcomes for communities more people and a wider range of people will have engaged with heritage. HLF is particularly keen that people will have learnt about heritage. This programme has a short application form which is suitable for everyone, including first-time applicants. There are no deadlines. Applications may be submitted at any time until 2019.

Funding HLF - Parks for People Welcomes UK Applications Not-for-profit organisations in the UK have until 1 September to apply for a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant to revitalise an historic public park or cemetery. Parks for People funding helps to conserve the heritage that makes both historic parks and cemeteries special and it gives local people a say in how they are managed in the future. Projects improve people s wellbeing and knowledge of their area, and make communities better places to live, work and visit. Applicants need to show that the local community values the park or cemetery as part of their heritage, and that they are already actively involved in its management. Not-for-profit organisations and partnerships led by not-for-profit organisations can apply including local authorities, charities, trusts, community interest companies, social enterprises, parish councils, voluntary organisations and community groups. Grants of between 100,000 and 5 million are available to support the following: Landscape design layout. Surviving or lost historic features or buildings. Natural heritage including priority habitats and species. Archaeological sites, earthworks or features from an earlier phase of design. Collections of plants, trees, objects or documents. Cultural traditions such as stories, festivals, fairs and crafts. People s memories and experiences of the park or cemetery. The history associated with individual features such as memorials or veteran trees. There is a two-round application process. Applications can be made at an early stage of planning in order to get a good idea of whether the project will receive funding. The second round application will require greater detail and must be received up to 26 months after the first-round decision. The next deadline for applications is 1 September 2015 (12pm).
