MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT We hope the newsletter is helpful in learning about the opportunities we offer as a local chapter of the ONS. Our chapter's membership spans Washington, DC and Montgomery County, MD and we are fortunate to live and work so close to our Nation's Capitol where exciting cancer research is being done at the National Institutes of Health and healthcare policy meetings are occurring weekly for various government and private organizations whose aim is to improve conditions for cancer patients. This year our chapter has continued to be involved in the Cancer Moonshot Initiative by attending meetings at the White House, we continue to offer pharmaceutical and chapter dinner meetings to our members in order to educate ourselves about different issues in oncology. Please stay up to date on our chapter's opportunities by signing up for updates and following us on Facebook and Twitter. Please feel free to contact us directly by if you have any questions or would like to get more involved in helping us to plan more events for our members. 2 More Important News Recruitment We are currently looking into networking with the local nursing schools for ONS NCC recruitment. If you have any ideas or contacts, please send them to Upcoming Chapter Events We have a busy few months ahead with several upcoming events: October 18 Chapter Dinner: Walgreens Empowering people through challenges and change. October 28 Clinical Trials Course - at Siegel Auditorium - Washington Hospital Center. 8:30am-5pm October 30 Chapter dinner with Annie Katz at Carmine's on Fertility Preservation in Young Adults with Cancer. Starts at 6pm. Scholarships The NCC has several scholarships available: Congress 2018 three available at $500 each. Details coming soon-be on the lookout! Conference Scholarship: Our chapter is offering a scholarship for members for reimbursement up to $250 to attend a conference of their choosing related to oncology! If interested, please a short <500 word essay to Kristin (Kristin.ferguson.1@gmail.com) describing: o How this conference will help them grow in their role as an oncology nurse o How they will bring back this new knowledge to the National Capital Chapter of ONS. This can include running for a board position, giving a short presentation at an NCC ONS meeting, or writing an article for our newsletter. 3 ONS Congress 2018 Washington DC As you all know, ONS Congress 2018 is being held in Washington, DC May 17-20, ONS organizes the majority of Congress but they will need some help from our chapter. Volunteers We will be looking for quite a few volunteers prior to May for Congress. More information coming in February but a few volunteer spots: Scholarships Room Monitors Packet Stuffing Scan-n-go Registration Local Chapter Booth Opening Ceremony Processional Service Project Interested in attending? Since Congress is being held locally, we will be able to award three scholarships of $500 each. Watch for more information as to due dates and essay requirement. Abstracts & Registration Abstract submissions are open as of August 21! More information. Registration opens in November 2017 earn up to 30 CNEs! ONS Congress 2017 Scholarship Recipient: Toni Flaspeter was our recipient of the 2017 ONS Congress Scholarship. Toni is a nurse navigator for the breast cancer team at Medstar Washington Hospital Center. I was intrigued by a lot of the sessions focusing on survivorship programs and challenges facing oncology programs across the country. I was able to bring back the information I obtained at Congress and share it with my department. I was incredibly impressed by the variety of posters presented! There was a ton of information presented and I was so happy to be a part of it. We even met McDreamy! Page 3 of 5

4 Nomination Details The position assists the current president with the strategic plan for the chapter, participates in quarterly board meetings and also represents the chapter at the ONS Leadership meeting in Pittsburgh. Eligibility criteria include: Must be a current and active member of the chapter Must be willing to make a three-year commitment to the chapter Participate in quarterly board meetings Participate in annual retreat in late Summer- Date TBD. Attend the ONS Leadership Weekend meeting in Pittsburgh The position is a two year commitment. The position is responsible for maintaining the chapters finances, budget, and submitting the annual report to National each year. Eligibility criteria include: Must be a current and active member of the chapter Must be willing to make a two-year commitment to the chapter Participate in quarterly board meetings Participate in the annual retreat held on a Saturday in late Summer - Date TBD We have so many gifted and talented nurses in our chapter we encourage you and hope you consider running for any of these positions. We hope to have a ballot ready by November 15th to fill these positions. Please send me an if you are interested in running! 5 Non-Chapter Events, CEUs, Public Policy For any additional happenings in the world of Oncology Lectures October 7: Advances in Cancer Immunotherapy: by Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer, 7:30am-1:30pm. Hyatt Regency - Fairfax, VA CEUs October 17: Free CEUs! Webinar on Hepatocellular Carcinoma Public Policy At ONS Capitol Hill Days 2017, we learned about three bills ONS is currently advocating for: PCHETA (Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act) aims to increase education to healthcare workers through fellowships and residency programs in palliative medicine, create career development in hospice and palliative care, national education awareness campaigns on palliative care, and enhance research in palliative care. Cancer Drug Parity Act of 2017 aims to put coverage for oral and self-injectable anticancer medications at the same coverage as those medications covered in infusion. Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization provides funding for scholarships and loan repayment for nurses working in hospitals with a rural or underserved population (RN & APRN), nurses who work as faculty, diversity grants, and increase nurse retention. Capitol Hill Days 2017: Georgetown University Hospital NP Jenna Weatherson and WHC RN Toni Flaspeter represented VA and DC respectively at ONS Capitol Hill Days.
