1 JANUS NEWS Janus of Santa Cruz Newsletter September 2017 Thank You Rod! As you may have heard, CEO Rod Libbey retired last month after a tremendous career with Janus of Santa Cruz. His outstanding leadership has placed Janus at the forefront in treatment services and client care. Rod s dedication to compassionate care has been modeled by an outstanding staff who serve our clients and families as they battle the disease of addiction. Under Rod s leadership, we are serving more clients effectively and with more services to the community of Santa Cruz County. As your Board Chair, I can t thank Rod enough for all the lives he and the Janus staff have saved. We as a Board are so proud of Rod and the staff. It has been an honor to serve with you and for you. We wish you and your family the best in your retirement. Janus Obtains More Grants to Provide More Services Just before Rod retired, he and staff submitted applications for grant opportunities to increase treatment services to our community. Well, we have some great news! The Department of Health Care Services has awarded Janus two grants with a combined total of approximately $4.6MM to be used for our new Hub & Spoke program. The program will address the opioid crisis by increasing access to treatment in both local and rural areas, reducing unmet treatment needs and reducing opioid overdose-related deaths through prevention, treatment and recovery activities. We also received a grant from the Central California Alliance for Health s Board of Commissioners for our residential treatment expansion project. In order to address the anticipated increase in service needs once the Medi-Cal expansion is initiated, the grant will provide capital improvements to help Janus increase our licensed service capacity from the current 24 beds to 40 beds. These grants are extremely critical to continuing our mission of helping those suffering from the disease of addiction. Great work Rod and staff; we thank you for your service and commitment. Janus on the National Stage Our MAT director, Mark Sanford will partner with Dr. Raymond Herr, to present at the Correctional Health Care Leadership Institute s annual conference in Las Vegas. They will be presenting on the Santa Cruz experience with in-custody MAT services, highlighting both the challenges and the successes we ve experienced. This information will surely be useful to other counties grappling with the challenge of in-custody MAT for inmates with opioid use disorder. Rudy Escalante, Janus Acting CEO Photo: Grey3k Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence. - Hellen Keller In This Issue: Acting CEO s Message MAT Expansion Department Spotlight Rod Libbey Retires New CEO Announced
2 SC County Jail Congratulations to Retiring Janus CEO, Rod Libbey! More than 70 people gathered on Friday, August 11th to celebrate the Sobering Center highly successful career and lasting impact Rod Libbey has had on the employees, clients and community partners at Janus of Santa Cruz. California Assembly 29 District Director, Maureen McCarty, presented Rod with a resolution in recognition of his unique contributions to SUD education and awareness in the community and his support of statewide treatment efforts. Maria Elena De la Garza, CEO of the Community Action Board, and Vitka Eisen, CEO of HealthRight 360, both spoke at the event and the Janus Board of Directors offered Rod a commemorative plaque and gift; warmly thanking him for his deep commitment during his 7 years at Janus. The Janus of Santa Cruz Board and staff extend our most gracious thanks to Rod. We wish him the very best for a relaxing retirement! Photo: Santa Cruz Sentinel Department Spotlight: Janus Perinatal Janus Perinatal is a unique residential program that offers a safe, secure home for mothers and children during treatment. Women in the program learn early recovery skills that help them to maintain long term sobriety, as well as parenting skills and techniques to help them break the cycle of substance use disorder. Our program is unique because we serve pregnant, postpartum and parenting women and their children, says Program Manager, Melinda Brown. This has opened the door for many mothers who were not able to come into treatment before. With two full-time counselors, several bilingual treatment techs, and a bilingual childcare staff member, the Janus Perinatal Program includes space for 10 mothers and up to 14 children, ages 0-5. The Janus Perinatal aftercare program is thriving and we continue to see previous clients come back to program when they are doing well to share their success, as well as when they are struggling and needing support. With the Perinatal Program at Janus, we have the most amazing opportunity to help mothers break the cycle and create a new life for themselves and their families, says Melinda. September is National Recovery Month!
3 Farewell, Good Friend Janus to Expand Treatment Access for Opioid Use Disorder Janus of Santa Cruz has been awarded two major grants from the Department of Health Care Services to create a Central Coast Hub & Spoke System (CCH&SS) and expand Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. The project will improve access to MAT by increasing the numbers of buprenorphine providers and reducing untreated opioid use disorder and overdose fatalities in our community. CCH&SS aims to serve more than 1,200 patients over a two-year period. Damon McGuire May 2, July 15, 2017 Damon McGuire, friend of Janus and the recovery community, passed away peacefully at home July 15th. As a registered Addiction Specialist and drug and alcohol counselor, Damon started Intervention Works, where he was nationally recognized for his work as a successful substance abuse interventionist. Damon dedicated his life's mission to helping others, like himself, reclaim their lives from drugs and alcohol. His advocacy and commitment to the transformational power of recovery changed lives and the community forever, and he will surely be missed. Janus clinics in Santa Cruz and Watsonville will serve as the program hubs while spokes will include designated prescribing physicians, medical clinics, primary care medical homes, federally qualified health centers, and specialty clinic-based outpatient behavioral health providers. Janus hubs will engage patients and implement a coordinated approach to managing care while facilitating access to treatment services in partnership with spokes. Spokes will provide counseling, contingency management and case management services along with collaborative teams of health and addiction professionals to monitor treatment and coordinate access to recovery support. From , Santa Cruz County reported over 700 non-fatal ER visits and 130 overdose fatalities due to opioid abuse. With opioid use on the rise, Santa Cruz County is primed to design, implement and evaluate this collaborative care model, says Mark Stanford, Director of MAT Services at Janus of Santa Cruz. Through the new Janus CCH&SS program, treatment for individuals with Opioid Use Disorder can become more accessible and effective, health outcomes will improve and mortality can begin to decline. The Janus CCH&SS is based on a Vermont H&SS model that encouraged uptake of MAT while also improving quality of care. The State of Vermont developed a successful regional system that was eventually implemented statewide. Janus Board of Directors Edison Jensen, Chair Alan Christenson, Vice Chair Kim Hogan, Treasurer Paul Bellina, Secretary Gail Kirby, Member Jenny Sarmiento, Member Mike Allen, Member Welcome Rudy Escalante, Janus New CEO Rudy will take on the role of CEO at Janus of Santa Cruz on October 2, Prior to working at Janus, Rudy was Chief of Police for the City of Capitola and an active participant on several local non-profit boards. Rudy earned his Master s Degree in Public Administration from San José State University. He was a member of the Santa Cruz County Criminal Justice Council and volunteered for 20 years as a member of the Janus Board of Directors, serving for eight years as its Chair. Local Attorney, Edison Jensen has been elected to replaced Rudy as Chair of the Janus of Santa Cruz Board of Directors.
