2 The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre is a small place where big things happen. Our vibrant cultural events and activities help make Havant, Hampshire and the surrounding region a better place to live. Every year we work hard to make sure we present a broad range of events and activities that make a difference to people s lives. We want to create experiences that change the way people see the world; to enhance wellbeing and make our community proud. Participation in the arts can contribute to community cohesion, reduce social exclusion and isolation and make communities feel safer and stronger. We hope that our visitors, audiences, funders and other stakeholders share our passion for ensuring our region is stronger, more resilient and a more enjoyable place to be because of The Spring. Here are some of the things we are most proud of: We are pleased to welcome a diverse range of audiences to our activities: We welcomed 130,128 visitors to our building. OUR Audiences We worked with 6,542 people through our outreach programme. Our audiences, visitors and participants are as diverse as the community we serve: Our large and diverse audience means we can make a different to lives across the region. 76% of older people say art and culture is important in making them feel happy; 57% say it is important in helping them meet other people; and 60% say it is important in encouraging them to get out and about. Meanwhile students from low-income families who take part in art activities at school are three times more likely to get a degree than children from low-income families who do not and those who take part in drama and library activities improve their achievement in literacy. 3 We are proud of the wide range of events and activities we manage In 2017/18 we opened for 324 Days and managed 1783 events in our building and across Havant Borough. We managed theatre, music, comedy, family events, workshops, exhibitions, meetings, rehearsals, conferences and education sessions. By presenting a wide range of events we cater for a large and diverse audience. We sold 24,318 tickets and managed over 300 free events. Our Activities We welcomed 61,488 visitors to our museum and hosted 7 exhibitions. This is important, as frequent engagement with art and culture is associated with a higher level of subjective wellbeing. People who have attended a cultural place or event in the last 12 months are almost 60% more likely to report good health compared to those who have not. 5 We are glad our work makes an impact Our work encompasses a broad range of activities and events from events that provide entertainment to hundreds of people, to one-off arts experiences that inspire and change lives. In the last year our work has included: Havant At Home A large scale outdoor event featuring music, circus, participatory activities and more, which were enjoyed by 500 people despite a downpour! Storyteller, Storyteller A family performance about literacy performed in four libraries across Havant Borough. Tickets are sold on a Pay What You Decide basis to ensure that financial limitations are not a barrier for anyone. Forget Me Not Cinema Monthly dementia-friendly film screenings. Poetry and Mental Health We worked with 60 pupils across eight schools on a project that used poetry and performance to explore anxiety, depression and managing mental health. The poems were performed to camera and made into films which are now being used in schools to help teachers discuss mental health issues with pupils and parents. Art Drop In This weekly free art session is attended by a wide variety of people including those with learning disabilities, carers, those with physical disabilities and those on limited incomes. In participants attended. Family Festival Our Family Festival engaged 1,149 people in free arts activities across Havant Borough all with an environmental theme. Havant and Waterlooville Football Memories To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the formation of Havant and Waterlooville Football Club we are managing a project that sees us gather memories and stories from local people about the impact the club has on their lives. This project sees us celebrate and recognise an organisation that is, for many people, an important part of local life. Our work takes place in our building in Havant and across the Borough Thank you for bringing Storyteller, Storyteller to our local library and making it very easily accessible Audience feedback The Spring is quirky in the very best sense of the word. 7 In addition to the social impact of our work The Spring is an important contributor to the local economy. In addition to our 26 staff, we employed a further 36 freelance tutors and provided three work placement opportunities. According to the Contribution of the arts and culture industry to the UK economy report of 2017, for every 1 generated by the arts and culture industry an additional 1.30 is generated in the wider economy. With our 2017/18 turnover of 497,000 that means The Spring contributed over 646,000 to the local economy. I always feel better for having visited the Spring. 8 Financial Summary In our income was 497,308 68% of this was earned through ticket sales, room hires and commercial activities 3% was raised through donations and grants for projects and activities 29% was raised through grants from our local authority funders, Hampshire County Council and Havant Borough Council. we spent 486,009 on cultural activities The Spring is a registered charity.
