Section Title Time to Change Sarah Restall
Right now 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year 1 in 6 workers is dealing with anxiety, depression or stress Research shows that work tends to be the most stressful factor in people s lives 40% of employers view workers with mental health problems as a significant risk mental health is a concern Mental ill-health is the leading cause of sickness absence in the UK, costing an average of 1,035 per employee per year
Yet Eight in ten employers have no mental health policy to help staff sustain good mental health While stress has forced 1 in 5 workers to call in sick, 95% gave a different reason to their boss Managers want to do more to improve staff mental wellbeing but they need more training and guidance Staff would feel more loyal and committed if their employer took action on staff wellbeing
Our healthchecks report found that Our healthcheck findings showed 82% reported experiencing stress, low mood or poor mental health whilst at work 37% reported having to take time off work because of stress, low mood or poor mental health Only 57% of employees were aware of mental health support that was available to them 46% thought their organisation did not encourage them to talk openly about mental health problems
Stigma and discrimination can be life-threatening and lifelimiting 60% of people said that stigma and discrimination are as damaging or more damaging than the symptoms of their mental health problem
Why take action? Why take action? keep this slide? If we primarily employ people for their minds, it makes business sense to ensure your employees are as mentally healthy and, as a result productive, as possible. Encouraging your employees to talk about mental health can make a real difference to sickness absence rates, productivity and wellbeing. More employers pledging means more noise being made this helps to break the silence around mental health in workplaces up and down the country. You will be joining a fast growing movement of over 450 organisations from almost every sector
Time to Change Time to Change Began in 2007 and is a campaign to end the stigma and discrimination that people with mental health problems face in England. We're run by the charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, with funding from the Department of Health, Comic Relief and the Big Lottery Fund. We aim to empower people to challenge stigma and speak openly about their own mental health experiences, as well as changing the attitudes and behaviours towards those of us with mental health problems.

Our work We work in schools across England to support them to deliver anti stigma work with their students. We run social marketing campaigns aimed at young people aged and their parents. We will be training 140 young champions. People with experience of mental health problems aged
The Impact of Stigma 65% friends, 50% parents, 45% boyfriends and girlfriends and 43% teachers 69% said that fear of stigma has prevented them from telling a friend about their mental health problem 50% said it had stopped them applying for a job 30% said that it had stopped them applying for or taking up a place at college or university And most worryingly 28% said negative reactions from others had made them want to give up on life stigma made me feel so isolated when I was ill, and it still stops me from asking for help when I m having bad days. If I was less ashamed a few years ago, I would have asked for help before I tried to end my life. Instead it made me suffer in silence for so long. (Nov 2013 survey 541 YP)
Hear from young people You are too young to be mentally ill What does stigma feel like? v=dnohlpa0lne Fp9IGc
Involving Young People I honestly feel so happy doing that :) I had a bad week but sharing my story and getting teachers saying thank you and all those people applauding really made me feel good :) thank you for all the times you give me to share my story. It means so much to me :)
