2 DESCRIPTION: Puberty is a time of dramatic physiological, cognitive and emotional change, and is associated with an increased risk of psychiatric disorders, suicide and aggression among adolescents. Because of the profound changes in brain organization in early adolescence, puberty may present not only an increased risk of disturbance in the young person, but also a unique opportunity for intervention. OBJECTIVES: After participation in this program attendees will be able to: 1. Identify techniques and studies that illuminate the connection between brain development and behaviour in adolescents. Topics include brain imaging, time lines for brain maturation and environmental factors. 2. Relate developmental brain changes to behavioural challenges of their adolescent patients. 3. Identify the pathophysiology of common sleep disorders in adolescents and interpret how these may affect day time behaviour and function. 4. Apply the principles of CBT in the treatment of adolescents with anxiety disorders. 5. Identify the challenges of using SSRIs in the adolescent patient population and will be better able to overcome these challenges in practice. TARGET AUDIENCE: This program will be of benefit to child psychiatrists, family physicians, neurologists, pediatricians, psychiatrists, residents and other health professionals involved in the treatment of adolescent psychiatric disorders.
