2 INVITATION 2 ND ANNOUNCEMENT A warm welcome to the third biennial symposium of the South African Urogynaecology Association in Durban in March This will be a multidisciplinary meeting with a varied programme providing workshops, live surgery and presentations. Issues addressing pelvic floor abnormalities will be discussed. Five overseas speakers agreed to participate and they will conduct the workshops and do the operations. The aim is to improve the standard of urogynaecology and pelvic floor dysfunction and this meeting will contribute significantly towards this goal. The organising committee looks forward to seeing you at this meeting and may all the delegates and companies have a wonderful and enjoyable time of learning, sharing and interacting at this meeting. 3 INVITED INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS Gordon Hosker Urodynamacist UK Kindly sponsored by Tecmed Gordon Hosker is a Consultant Clinical Scientist in The Warrell Unit at St Mary s Hospital, Manchester, UK who has specialised since 1978 in the investigation of the lower urinary tract and lower gastro-intestinal tract in women. He is responsible for the urodynamic services of the Warrell Unit (an internationally known centre for the investigation and treatment of lower urinary tract dysfunction in women). He runs a regional NHS service in anorectal physiology studies and endoanal ultrasound. He has given over 60 invited lectures, both nationally and internationally, on topics concerning these specialities. He has written several invited reviews and chapters on aspects of these investigations. He has conducted international practical urodynamic workshops. Dr Abdul Sultan Urogynaecologist UK Abdul Sultan is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a special interest in Urogynaecology at Mayday University Hospital, Croydon. He has recently been appointed a Reader at St George s University of London. His research involved studying the effects of childbirth on the pelvic floor and anal sphincters. This led to a landmark paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine and to a Doctorate. His pioneering work highlighted the deficiencies in training of doctors and midwives in detecting and repairing injuries to the perineum and anal sphincter after childbirth. He serves on the Executive Committee (Treasurer) of the British Society of Urogynaecology, Scientific Advisory Committee (RCOG) and Council of Royal Society of Medicine (Honorary Junior Secretary - Obstetrics and Gynaecology) and is on the scientific committee of the International Urogynecological Association.
4 Dr Ranee Thakar Urogynaecologist UK Ranee Thakar is a Subspecialist in Urogynaecology and Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Mayday University Hospital, Croydon as well as a honorary senior lecturer at St George s University of London. Her research involved studying the effects of hysterectomy on bowel, bladder and sexual function following. This led to a landmark paper which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine and to a Doctorate (MD) from the University of London. She is the chair of the meetings subcommittee of the British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG) and has been elected as the next secretary of BSUG. She is also the chair of the education committee of the International Urogynecological Association. She is currently a consultant in a busy tertiary referral urogynaecology department at Mayday University Hospital, with a large clinical workload, dealing with complex urogynaecological problems, teaching medical students, training junior doctors and undertaking clinical research. Prof Arnaud Wattiez France Kindly sponsored by Karl Storz Prof Wattiez is Professor of gynecological surgery in Hopitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg, Director of Gynecology courses at IRCAD-EITS Hopital Universitaire de Hautepierre Université Louis Pasteur Strasbourg, France Prof Michel Cosson Kindly sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Ethicon Professor Michel Cosson completed his MD and Ph D at the University of Lille, France. He focussed his Ph D studies on the mechanical properties of the pelvic tissues in pelvic floor disorders. He currently holds the post of Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Medical University Hospital Lille, France. He, together with a group of 8 other leading French pelvic floor surgeons developed the Transvaginal Mesh Procedure for Female Pelvic Floor Prolapse. His team worked closely with the Ethicon Women s Health and Urology R&D Team to bring the PROLIFT* Pelvic Organ Prolapse Kit to Market. Professor Cosson is a respected Internal Speaker and is widely published on the topic of Pelvic Floor. He is also the coauthor of no less than three books relating to his field of interest.
