What is a NIH Biosketch? It is a highly formatted component of a NIH grant proposal that enables reviewers to evaluate the qualifications of the PI and scientific team that will be executing the research project.

Previous Biosketch Components Headings: Name, era commons, Position, Education & Training A. Personal Statement B. Positions and Honors C. Selected Peer-reviewed Publications D. Research Support After 5/25/15: Section is changing After 5/25/15: Section is changing

New Biosketch Components (Required a`er 5/25/15) New Format Changes in a Nutshell: 1. Increases page limit from four to five pages 2. Allows publica1ons in both the Personal Statement and Contribu?on to Science sec?ons 3. Allows inves1gators to describe up to five of their most significant contribu?ons to science 4. Includes a link to full list of published work 5. Provides access to a tool to help build the New Biosketch (s?ll need to write PS and Contribu?ons)

New Biosketch Components (Required a`er 5/25/15) Heading: Name, era commons, Position, Education & Training A.Personal Statement specific for each applica1on and allows up to 4 cita1ons B.Positions and Honors C.Contributions to Science 5 sections with up to 4 citations D.Research Support

A. Personal Statement Briefly describe why you are well- suited to receive Adding the award own literature for which you are applying. The relevant factors may include cita?ons aspects of to your the end training; of the your previous experimental work on this specific topic personal or related statement topics; is your new technical exper1se; your collaborators or scien1fic environment; and your past performance in this or related fields (you may men?on specific contribu?ons to science that are not included in Sec?on C). Also, you may iden1fy up to four peer- reviewed publica1ons that specifically highlight your experience and qualifica1ons for this project. If you wish to explain impediments to your past produc1vity, you may include a descrip1on of factors such as family care responsibili1es, illness, disability, and ac1ve duty military service.

A. Personal Statement As before, CUSTOMIZE this for each new grant application so that it speaks directly to this particular grant proposal Sell your role in the proposed research & speak to the type of funding mechanism connecting it to your goals Be accessible you may use 1 st person writing Be aspirational. Show excitement/passion for your research If referencing impediments, be brief and non-dramatic

A. Personal Statement Length Should aim for ½ page and not exceed 1 page As PI, you are responsible for customizing your own personal statement AND for ensuring the other key personnel biosketches have personal statements that speak to their specific role on your project Depending on the type of grant, emphasize your role for: Leadership (PI of a R grant) Training potential for you to advance in your field (F32 or K) Are you a mentor? Track record and experience to support the proposed aims Tone should be confident but not arrogant Don t just walk us through your accomplishments but speak to the science in this proposal

A. Personal Statement Example SR Price I am a biochemist/cell physiologist with a long standing interest in metabolic dysfunction. My research career at Emory began in 1991 when I joined a team of clinician scientists who were investigating the muscle atrophy or protein-energy wasting associated with chronic kidney disease. Since that time, I have been an independent investigator whose focus has been largely, but not exclusively, to explore the changes in cell signaling and gene/protein expression that produce muscle loss in a variety of catabolic conditions. In addition to a research career of more than 30 years, I have extensive experience in research training, mentorship and leadership/administration. Since 1991, I have mentored 5 PhD graduate students, 12 post-doctoral research fellows and 2 nephrology clinical fellows. Of these trainees, 11 are currently in academic settings and 8 have active research programs. I have served on the Executive Committee for 2 biomedical PhD programs at Emory. I am a mentor for the NIH-sponsored Atlanta Broadening Experience in Scientific Training (BEST) Award for post-doctoral fellows and a founding member of the Emory Society of Mentors. In the Department of Medicine, I have served on the Faculty Mentoring, Faculty Promotions and Faculty Development Committees. I have been the Co-Program Director for the Nephrology NIH T32 award for the last 10 years. As Assistant Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine, I oversee a variety of departmental programs and events to support the scientific and career development of junior faculty and post-doctoral fellows. In summary, I enjoy and embrace the training mission of our academic institution. Continuation of this training grant will allow our assembled team of mentors to continue combining our pursuit of excellence in research with the rewarding privilege of training our next generation of basic and clinical investigators. The following references have former graduate or post-doctoral trainees (underlined): 1. Marinovic, A.C., Zheng, B., Mitch, W.E., and Price, S.R.
