CENTRE FOR BIOMEDICAL ETHICS AND LAW The Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Law consists of a number of experts in medical law and medical ethics. The Centre aspires to provide training, research and scientific and societal service in medical ethics and law. The Centre was created in 1986 and celebrates in 2011 its twenty-fifth anniversary.
3 BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES About 3 decades ago, the world was astonished by the birth of Louisa Brown, the first in vitro fertilisation baby. This was the beginning of an evolution that seems to have no limits: in vitro fertilisation, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, reprogenetics, cloning, stem cell research, sex selection, etc. These medical possibilities or promises, however, are not without ethical and social implications. The objective of this course is to focus at some of the most challenging ethical issues in reproductive medicine, as well on the level of fundamental notions as applied clinical questions. In the first part the participants are introduced in the medical and technical possibilities, treatments and limits of the actual reproductive technologies. In the second part follows the ethical reflection on contemporary and foundational issues in reproductive ethics. The final part consists of international and intercultural perspectives. FORMAT This course works from an interdisciplinary (clinical, ethical, philosophical) perspective. During the course experts will give presentations on various topics in the domain of reproductive medicine. There will be time for intensive discussions. The language of instruction will be English. PARTICIPANTS The course is of interest to participants from diverse professional backgrounds, such as medicine, philosophy and theology, health care, and PhD students undertaking courses of study in these areas. All participants will receive a syllabus with introductory readings prior to the course. Since the programme schedule is fully packed, participants are kindly advised to prepare by studying these materials in advance. Lecturers will assume acquaintance with these basic readings.
