1 The Sunshine Sharing Hour With Steven Horne, RH(AHG) Tuesday, January 22, 2019 Rejuvenate Your Health with Nitric Oxide (NO) Nitric Oxide (NO) A simple molecule composed of one atom of nitrogen and one atom of oxygen Highly reactive Lasts a few seconds in the body In 1998, the Nobel Peace Prize for Physiology or Medicine was awarded to three researchers for their discoveries concerning nitric oxide as a signaling molecule to relax blood vessels and perform other tasks There is now a growing body of research showing the health benefits of adequate levels of NO 1

2 Endothelium or Endothelial Lining A layer of cells, just one cell thick, lining the arteries It produces nitric oxide to signal the artery muscles to relax and increase blood flow It plays a vital role in managing oxygen and nutrient distribution to every other cell of the body Endothelial Dysfunction Occurs when the endothelial lining is damaged and inflammation is present Endothelial mitochondria shift production of NO to energy production to compensate for the inflammatory process This is a an underlying factor in chronic and degenerative disease because tissue health cannot be maintained without adequate blood flow Nitroglycerine and NO The NO research explains why nitroglycerine works as a treatment for angina Nitroglycerine is transformed into nitrite, which is then converted to NO NO signals blood vessels to relax, lower blood pressure and reducing angina 2

3 NO and Blood Pressure Declining levels of NO may be the primary cause of essential hypertension (high blood pressure from unknown causes) Millions of people have essential hypertension It is a risk factor for strokes and heart attacks and causes kidney damage NO and Heart Disease Increasing NO levels can help prevent, slow or even reverse arterial plaque Increased NO also help prevent thrombosis, the formation of blood clots in the circulatory system that cause heart attacks, strokes and other problems. Erectile Dysfunction and NO Low levels of NO can also contribute to erectile dysfunction (ED) In fact, many drugs for ED (including Vigara and Cialis work by increasing NO levels Increased NO also helps female arousal 3

4 Interconnections Endothelial Dysfunction is linked to chronic inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction The more inflammation present in the body, the lower the levels of NO produced by the endothelium Poor mitochondrial function also reduces NO production and increases free radical production NO and Inflammation Higher levels of inflammation = lower levels of NO Increased NO reduces inflammation Specifically, NO production may help relieve the chronic inflammation involved in asthma and arthritis. NO and Diabetes Increased NO levels have also been shown to increase cellular sensitivity to insulin, making it helpful for people with diabetes Increased NO also reduces diabetic complications such as blindness, foot and leg ulcers and kidney disease 4
