Training #14 Silent Inflammation
Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer s and arthritis; these are some of the most common conditions affecting Canadians today. They all have a common underlying current; they are all connected to the GUT and the underlying issue is INFLAMMATION
What Is Inflammation There are two kinds of inflammation: Acute Inflammation which brings blood flow to an area and helps heal injuries or infections. which happens deep on a cellular level and causes damage
Silent or chronic inflammation is a deep, low grade inflammatory attack within the cells. It can t be seen or felt and rather than heal the body, it damages it. This damage happens on a cellular level in the organs, tissues and blood vessels. Silent inflammation is the root cause of many chronic and debilitating diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, asthma and inflammatory bowel disease
Where Does Come From? At the HEART of silent inflammation is the GUT; leaky gut to be specific
What Is Leaky Gut? A one-cell-thick layer lines the intestinal tract, acting like a screen by separating digestive contents from the rest of the body. It lets in small molecules like water and nutrients from food and keeps out larger particles like pathogens, undigested food, and toxins. When the protective lining of the intestines becomes damaged, it can no longer keep out the unwanted particles. Like a hole in a screen door that lets in flies and mosquitoes, suddenly the bloodstream is presented with toxins, pathogens, and undigested food - all considered foreign particles to the body. The immune system responds accordingly by launching a defensive attack that produces inflammation. This inflammation triggers a number of defensive responses by the body
Causes Of Leaky Gut Antibiotics/medications which can destroy the good protective bacteria, setting up intestinal inflammation Environmental toxins Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which irritate the intestinal lining Sugar which contributes to yeast overgrowth and yeast attaching to and poking holes in the intestinal lining Irritating foods the protein from certain foods that are regularly eaten can begin to cause irritation to the intestinal lining. Examples include: Soy protein Casein from dairy Ovalbumin from egg Gliadin from gluten containing foods - 7 -
The Gas Leak Before The Explosion A lack of chemical breakdown of food, irritation of the intestinal tract, leaky gut and stimulation of the gut immune factors, all result in a cascade of inflammatory proteins entering the bloodstream which sets the stage for silent inflammation
Signs Of Signs of silent inflammation are also three of the biggest risk factors for cardiovascular disease: High cholesterol High blood pressure High blood sugar If any of these conditions exist, silent inflammation is present and a person is at risk for heart disease
High Cholesterol The first thing to address is the fact that cholesterol itself is not bad. The body needs cholesterol for many functions and one of these is to deal with inflammation in the body. Silent inflammation damages the body and more cholesterol is produced in response. The body is trying to heal itself and it is the inflammation that is causing damage, not the cholesterol. Cholesterol actually works to clean up the damage caused by inflammation. It functions as an antioxidant in the body and it is only when it becomes oxidized that it becomes potentially dangerous
High Blood Pressure A common reason for high blood pressure is silent inflammation. Silent inflammation causes the arteries to become hard and thicken. It stimulates the production of plaque which narrows blood flow and results in high blood pressure. High blood pressure is the most important risk factor for stroke and heart attack. Very high pressure can cause a break in a weakened blood vessel. If it bleeds into the brain, it can cause a stroke. Lastly, if a blood clot blocks one of the narrowed arteries to the heart, it can cause a heart attack
High Blood Sugar Silent inflammation raises blood sugar and high blood sugar raises silent inflammation. It s a vicious cycle
Sugar and Sugar contributes to inflammation of the arterial walls by generating an insulin spike. When insulin continuously spikes it starts to ravage the fragile endothelial lining of blood vessels. If this lining becomes damaged, it creates the inflammatory chaos that eventually leads to heart attack and stroke. What s worse is that excessive sugar consumption can also cause weight gain. Weight gain, combined with sustained high insulin levels, can lead to insulin resistance and diabetes which further increases the risk of cardiovascular disease
Healing and Healing silent inflammation is a multi-prong approach and is essential for anyone dealing with health issues such as: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, asthma and inflammatory bowel disease. Healing begins with: Reduced sugar Supplementing with Omega-3 fatty acids Supplementing with probiotics Increasing fibre intake Treating leaky gut
Reduce Sugar In The Diet No More Than 10 Teaspoons Daily To track the amount of sugar in the foods consumed, use this simple equation: Teaspoons of Sugar = (Total Grams of Carbohydrate Total Grams of Fibre) 5 For example, if a food contains 30g of carbohydrates per serving and 4 grams of fibre it would look like this: 30-4 = 26 5 = 5.2 teaspoons of sugar If a person would like to track the amount of carbohydrates in foods that do not have a label, there is a great database called It s free to become a member
Why Food Labels Are Misleading? The sugar found on the nutrition facts panel of foods only refers to added or natural sugars found in the food. It does not account for the sugars that come from the breakdown of carbohydrates. Because carbohydrates break down into sugar in the digestive tract, it makes no difference whether those carbohydrates come from a donut, a cracker, or a carrot. The only exception is fibre which does not break down into sugar
Omega-3 Supplementation Omega-3 essential fatty acids help to heal leaky gut and stop inflammation. They have also been shown to lower triglyceride levels, minimize inflammation and clotting, and increase HDL ( good ) cholesterol. 21 Probiotic Supplementation With Ultimate Flora Ultra Potent Ultimate Flora Ultra Potent is a 100 billion culture, 10 strain probiotic formula. It contains 20 billion Bifidobacterium breve which helps decrease intestinal permeability, improves intestinal microflora, and has a positive effect on the intestinal immune system. It also contains 10 billion Bifidobacterium bifidum which reduces the inflammatory response of the colon. Ideal for: Inflammatory bowel disease Skin conditions Severe digestive issues Those who have completed multiple rounds of antibiotics
Fibre Supplementation Helps absorb toxins and bacteria that can lead to leaky gut Helps to lower high blood pressure and cholesterol Sources: Whelton, Seamus et al. (2005). Effect of Dietary Fiber Intake on Blood Pressure: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized, Controlled Clinical Trials.Journal of Hypertension. 23 (3),
Fibre Supplementation With Organic Clear Fibre Organic Clear Fibre uses 100% organic acacia fibre. Acacia is high in soluble fibre, but yields little to no gastrointestinal side effects. As well as its properties as a fibre supplement, acacia fibre is also a prebiotic which helps promote the colonization of healthy bacteria in the intestinal tract

Ultimate Flora Ultra Potent Ingredients Ultimate Flora Ultra Potent There are two major types of probiotics, resident strains and transient strains. Resident strains are naturally found in the human intestine. They reestablish and adhere to the intestinal tract to repair the body s intestinal flora (beneficial bacterial balance). These are commonly referred to as human strain bacteria. Transient strains are found outside of the human intestinal system, but are extremely beneficial in maintaining its health. They are found living symbiotically on plants including many vegetables (if they have not been destroyed by pesticides). They do not re-establish in the intestinal tract, therefore it is necessary to consume them by either eating organic vegetables or take supplements. They provide numerous health benefits as they pass through the digestive tract. Resident strains: Bifidobacterium bifidum Studies show that disturbances of intestinal flora in connection with peristalsis disorders and liver problems are usually related to the restriction or disappearance of B. bifidum. It has the ability to protect the body against the devastation of rotavirus diarrhea and it modifies the gut flora and is a supportive therapy for intestinal infections and intestinal disturbances. Even more importantly, immune strengthening properties have been reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition especially in relation to colon health and its suppressive effect on tumors. It reports that B. bifidum is well tolerated without side effects, reducing the inflammatory response of the colon and stimulating the body s fluid immunity. Bifidobacterium breve Helps decrease intestinal permeability, improves intestinal microflora, and has a positive effect on the intestinal immune system. Bifidobacterium longum Helps in the formation of lactic acid along with small amounts of formic acid. These acids lower the PH of the intestines, thereby making the region undesirable for harmful bacteria. It is also a substantial producer of B vitamins. Lactobacillus acidophilus The predominant friendly bacteria in the upper intestinal tract. It helps reduce the levels of harmful bacteria and yeasts in the small intestine and also produces lactase, an enzyme which is important in the digestion of milk. Acidophilus is involved in the production of B vitamins (niacin, folic acid, and pyridoxine) during the digestive process. This is the most prevalent strain in the body. Lactobacillus casei Inhibits growth of E.coli, as well as being effective against urinary tract infections. Lactobacillus rhamnosus It is useful for the inhibition of vaginal and urinary tract infections. It helps the body resist pathogenic bacteria and viruses, and prevents rotoviral or Clostrididium difficile induced diarrhea. Lactobacillus salivarius Is useful in helping impair the growth and activity of harmful pathogenic bacteria, including H. pylori and salmonella. It also helps break down undigested protein and disengage the toxins produced by protein putrefaction. Transient strains: Lactobacillus fermentum Is capable of releasing glutathione and has been shown to prevent colonic inflammation such as colitis in animal studies. Lactobacillus plantarum Is an excellent alternative to antibiotics, and makes use of its potential to block receptor sites for gram- negative bacteria. L. plantarum is capable of metabolizing semiresistant fibres, such as onion, garlic, artichoke, wheat, oat, rye, bananas, and yeast. It is also an important tool in antimicrobial defense and its effect both against extra and intercellular pathogens
