1 Regulation (EU) No 1169/ Future work on food information to consumers BRIEFING Date: 12 November 2012 Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers (FIR) was adopted by the European Parliament and the Council on 25 October 2011 and was published in the Official Journal of the EU on 22 November It entered into force on 12 December In order for food business operators to adjust their labels, a transition period has been foreseen. The Regulation s provisions will generally have to be complied with as of 13 December Food business operators that have not applied any nutrition labelling before this date will have to comply with the nutrition labelling rules in accordance with Regulation 1169/2011 by 13 December Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 is a complex piece of legislation that has left a number of issues to be taken forward by the Commission. In fact, future work on the FIR involves 35 implementing acts/delegated acts/reports: - 17 obligatory actions (9 with deadline and 8 without deadline), and - 18 optional. The immediate action priorities for the Commission are as follows: - Origin labelling - Guidance on margins of tolerances for nutrition labelling - Trans fats - Alcoholic beverages Required actions with deadlines
