HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION Not classified as hazardous according to criteria of Worksafe Australia. 2 4. FIRST AID MEASURES Poison Information Centres in each State capital city can provide additional assistance ( ). Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. If swallowed, induce vomiting, preferably using Ipecac Syrup APF, and give one atropine tablet every 5 minutes until dryness of the mouth occurs. Seek immediate medical assistance. Eye contact: Irrigate with copious quantities of water for 15 minutes. In all cases of eye contamination it is a sensible precaution to seek medical advice. Skin contact: Immediately wash contaminated skin with plenty of water followed by soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before re-use. Can be absorbed through the skin with resultant toxic effects. If poisoned by skin absorption give one atropine tablet every 5 minutes until dryness of the mouth occurs. Seek immediate medical advice. Inhalation: Remove victim from exposure - avoid becoming a casualty. Remove contaminated clothing and loosen remaining clothing. If poisoned by absorption through lungs give one atropine tablet every 5 minutes until dryness of the mouth occurs. Allow patient to assume most comfortable position and keep warm. Keep at rest until fully recovered. Seek medical advice. Notes to physician: Anti-cholinesterase effects. Treatment: Give 2 mg of atropine sulphate intramuscularly or, in severe cases, intravenously, repeated at min intervals until dryness of the mouth occurs. When this response is achieved it is advisable to maintain a mild degree of atropinisation for 24 hours. If stopped too early pulmonary oedema may develop. Atropine should not be given to a cyanosed patient. Oximes such as 2-PAM are contra-indicated. 5. FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES Specific hazards: Non combustible liquid. Fire fighting further advice: Non combustible liquid. However after evapouration of water may liberate toxic fumes including those of oxides of nitrogen, methylamine, carbon oxides and small amounts of methyl isocyanate. Fire-fighters to wear self-contained breathing apparatus if risk of exposure to products of combustion or decomposition. Suitable extinguishing media: Water fog (or if unavailable fine water spray), foam, dry agent (carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder). 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Wear protective equipment to prevent skin and eye contamination. Contain spill with inert absorbent (like vermiculite or sand). Collect and seal in properly labeled drums for disposal. Wash area down with detergent and excess water. 3 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE Storage: Store away from foodstuffs, oxidising agents and strong bases. Store in the closed original container in a dry, cool, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Store in a locked room or place away from children, animals, food and feedstuffs. Keep container closed at all times check regularly for leaks. This material is a Scheduled Poison S5 and must be stored, maintained and used in accordance with the relevant regulations. 8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION National occupational exposure limits No value assigned for this specific material by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (Worksafe Australia). However, exposure standards for constituents: TWA ppm mg/m 3 Carbaryl - 5 As published by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (Worksafe Australia) Exposure Standard (TWA) is the time-weighted average airborne concentration over an eight-hour working day, for a five-day working week over an entire working life. According to current knowledge this concentration should neither impair the health or, not cause undue discomfort to, nearly all workers. These Exposure Standards are guides to be used in the control of occupational health hazards. All atmospheric contamination should be kept to as low a level as practicable. These exposure standards should not be used as fine dividing lines between safe and dangerous concentration of chemicals. They are not a measure of relative toxicity. If the direction for use on the product label are followed, exposure of individuals using the product will not exceed the above standard. The standard was created for workers who are routinely, potentially exposed during product manufacture. Engineering measures: Natural ventilation should be adequate under normal use conditions. Keep containers closed when not in use. Personal protection equipment: OVERALLS, SAFETY SHOES, SAFETY GLASSES, GLOVES (S). Avoid skin and eye contact and inhalation of mist. Wear overalls, safety glasses and impervious gloves. Always wash hands before smoking, eating, drinking or using the toilet. Carbaryl can be hydrolysed in alkaline (basic) solutions. 11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION No adverse health effects expected if the product is handled in accordance with this Safety Data Sheet and the product label. Symptoms that may arise if the product is mishandled are: Ingestion: Swallowing can result in headache, nausea, vomiting, slurred speech, blurred vision, muscular weakness, sweating, excessive salivation and constriction of the pupils. Severe exposure may lead to convulsions, coma and death from respiratory paralysis. Eye contact: A mild eye irritant. Skin contact: Contact with skin may result in irritation. Can be slowly absorbed through the skin. Symptoms as outlined under 'SWALLOWED' are unlikely to occur however, continuous prolonged exposure may cause symptoms of mild poisoning. (1) Inhalation: Inhalation of dust may result in symptoms as outlined under 'SWALLOWED' and can result in pulmonary oedema (fluid in lungs). Long Term Effects: Repeated exposure to concentrations insufficient to produce acute effects following a single exposure may eventually result in the onset of those symptoms. Teratogenic or embryotoxic effects are only seen at levels causing cholinesterase inhibition and other indications of maternal toxicity. In several rat studies there were no observable adverse effects at doses of 150 mg/kg/day (or 2000 ppm) in the diet during pregnancy. Doses of 500 mg/kg/day produced reduced survival of pups but also reduced weights in mothers, indicating maternal toxicity (4). This material has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group 3 agent. Group 3 - The agent is not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans (5). 12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION Avoid contaminating waterways. ENVIRONMENTAL FATE: Carbaryl is hydrolysed in water. The rate of breakdown depends on the water ph. At ph 7 the half life of Carbaryl is days. At ph levels of higher than 8 the half life is in the range of hours or even less. Photodegradation also occurs depending on light penetration. (1) Carbaryl is moderately to strongly adsorbed to soil (Koc ) and has low mobility in soil. (1) Because carbaryl is rapidly degraded and is not persistent in the environment, it has very low bioaccumulation properties. (1) ECOTOXICITY: Carbaryl has low toxicity to molluscs (clams, oysters, mussels), is very toxic to crustacea (water fleas, mysid shrimps) and is moderately toxic to fish.
