Vitamins and Salt This education pack is not intended to replace any advice given from a specialist CF team

Vitamins What are vitamins? There are vitamins in all kinds of food. Vitamins help to keep your body strong and healthy. There are lots of different vitamins. They have bigger names too. Ask your dietitian what they are. - A D E K C

Why do you need more vitamins? You need to have more vitamin A D E and K because you cannot soak up (absorb) all of the vitamins in your food. Can you colour in the shapes with A.D.E.K? A D E K Why do you need more of these vitamins? Vitamin A - helps you to see and to fight infections. Vitamin E - helps to keep your lungs blood and nerves healthy. Vitamin D - helps your bones to grow and keeps them strong. Vitamin K - helps keep your blood healthy. C B

Where can you find these vitamins? You can find lots of vitamin A, D, E and K in these foods. But these foods do not give you enough VITAMIN A, D, E and K so you need to have vitamin pills to give you all the vitamins you need. Write down how many vitamins you take, ask your mum or dad.

Salt Why do you need salt? When you run about and play with your friends you get all hot and sticky This is called sweating. Sweat is like salty water. Can you think of other times that you sweat? Because you have CF you do not sweat more than other children. However your sweat has a lot more salt. This means when it is hot or you are exercising hard and sweating. You need to eat more salty foods and drink more water. Sometimes you may need salt supplements.

Activity Try this and see which foods you think are salty. Ask your mum or dad to help you get some food and drinks to taste. If you do not have any of the items listed, ask your mum or dad to decide on something similar to taste. You will need: 1. A sprinkle of salt on a plate. 2. A drop of soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce. 3. A small piece of cheese. 4. A spoonful of yogurt, custard, pudding or ice cream. 5. A small piece of pizza, salami, ham or sausage. 6. A small glass of juice, squash or lemonade. 7. A cup of soup, or ½ teaspoon bovril or marmite mixed with hot water. 8. A slice of tomato, cucumber or carrot. 9. A cheesy cracker or salted crisps. A glass of water. (You will need it to rinse your mouth between tasting each item.) Write your list of food and drinks to taste. Taste them one at a time and decide if they are salty or not. Write your answers in the table. You may like to blindfold someone in your family, pass them small amounts of each item to taste, and ask them if it was salty or not. FOOD OR DRINK 1. SALT DID I THINK IT WAS SALTY? (YES OR NO) DID MY MUM, DAD, SISTER OR BROTHER THINK IT WAS SALTY? (YES OR NO)

Activity Which foods have lots of salt? These foods have lots of salt in them. Can you put the names under the foods that you like?

When should you take more salt and water? when it is hot. when you are exercising hard, and sweating. What should you do? Sprinkle more salt on food. Take more salty foods. Take your salt tablets. Drink more water.
