1 Dr. Jasmine Gujarathi* SHATAVARI A BOON FOR WOMEN Dr. Ritesh Gujarathi** During lifetime, women is constantly subjected to various physical and psychological changes. The alterations in her body during these stages create affinity towards different diseases. Changes in women s body at any given time are attributed to level of hormones. Her growth, maturity, development, reproductive capabilities, menopause, everything depends on the interplay of Hypothalamus Pituitary Ovarian Endometrial axis. During reproductive years, women are protected by female hormones. With menopause, women enter an estrogen deficient phase in their lives which accelerates the ageing process resulting in greater vulnerability to disorders like Coronary artery disease and osteoporosis. Women s longer life expectancy and rise in their population throughout the world has resulted in rise in their health needs. Ayurveda, the ancient system of medicine, specially classifies female s life time into different stages. This division or classification is in accordance with the dominance of doshas and level of dhatus in her body, alongwith her reproductive capacities. The reproductive phase of her life is governed by Pitta dosha along with Kapha in the beginning and Vata dosha in latter stage; any imbalance in this governing dosha will lead to abnormalities. This can be explained in terms of menstrual irregularities, failure to conceive and early menopause. Now a days, there is increase in incidence of these disorders because of changes in modes of life, lifestyles which attributes to imbalance in doshas. Even the postmenopausal period of life is a challenge for women as conditions like osteoporosis renders her a bedridden life. The care of women should go beyond disease orientation to include their total well being. Primary health care and efforts to provide health services should be directed to enable women to live healthy life as long as possible. Preparations for this should be commenced from early life. Women should be prepared physically and psychologically. There is a need for effective remedy to assist her in journey towards better health throughout different phases of life and add quality to her life. * Lecturer Dept. of Stri roga and Prasutitantra ** Lecturer Dept. of Basic Principles G. 2 Shatavari - a well known female rejuvenative, is very effective in enhancing female fertility and is actually considered to be the most helpful for women. It is traditionally used by women for overall health and vitality, to promote lactation, and as an aphrodisiac. In Sanskrit, the word Shatavari means She who possesses 100 husbands. Its beneficial effect on women during fertile i.e. reproductive life is well established. It is widely used as a drug for conception and during lactation. Recent research and chemical analysis helps in understanding its mode of action and also supports the traditional classification of Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) as a Rasayana, in promoting rejuvenation, mental and physical health, as well as providing a defense against premature aging and challenging environmental factors. Increasing risk than benefits of HRT has also turned attention of all medical sciences to this drug as an alternative of menopausal treatment. Research studies on menopause suggests encouraging results of Shatavari on relieving menopausal syndrome including hot flushes, irritability, vaginal dryness, night sweats etc. Shatavari increases the white blood count and almost stimulates macrophages which helps to combat candida. Shatavari with its Madhura-Tikta rasa, Guru- Snigdha guna, Madhura Vipaka, Sheeta Veerya and Rasyana effect proves to be beneficial to women in all stages of life. Charaka has categorized it as Balya(promoting strength or a tonic), Vayasthapana( promotes longevity) & Shukrajanana (spermatogenic), Also, he has cited it as a rejuvenative to Rasa and Mamsa dhatus and Mamsavaha srotasa. Sushruta has mentioned it as Shukrashodhana purifies the sperms or semen. Whereas, it is quoted as Vajikara augments the sexual vigour and quantity of semen (Sharangadhara Samhita). It is also classified as Samshamana neither it aggravates nor it eliminates the doshas from the body, but simply pacifies the aggravated doshas especially, Pitta. While describing the indications and use of Shatavari in Shatpushpa Shatavari kalpadhyaya in Kalpasthana he mentions that Shatavari acts as nector in women with amenorrhea, infertile, meno-metorrhagia, hypomenorrhoea, menopause, delayed puberty, irregular menstruation, women with history of still birth or whose children are weak, with dry vagina, frigidity and women with other complaints like diarrhea, polyuria and loss of normal colour. The chemical analysis of Shatavari reveals following constituents - Steroidal saponins, known as Shatavarins I-IV. Shatavarin I is the major glycoside with 3 glucose and rhamnose moieties attached to sarsasapogenin Isoflavones including 8-methoxy-5,6,4'- trihydroxyisoflavone 7- O-beta-Dglucopyranoside.
3 Asparagamine, a polycyclic alkaloid Racemosol, a cyclic hydrocarbon (9,10- dihydrophenanthrene) Polysaccharides, levels by exerting an estrogen like effect on the reproductive organs. These Phytoestrogens are times less potent in their estrogenic effect than human estrogen. like leucocytosis and neutrophilia. Antimicrobial : Different concentrations of the extracts of the roots of mucilage asparagus racemosus, showed Shatavarin I-IV and Isoflavones fall under group of Phytoestrogens. The word Phytoestrogens comes from Phyto which means plant and estrogen due to their ability to affect estrogenic activity in the body. Hence Phytoestrogens are plant derived substances whose structure results in chemical nature similar to endogenous Estrogens of humans. Although Phytoestrogens have some similar actions to estrogens, they are not true estrogens that are produced in human body. Phytoestrogens can either act as weak estrogens, or provide precursors to substances that affect our estrogen activity. Phytoestrogens, while they displace the human estrogens, support female hormone The main action of Phytoestrogens is due to their adaptogenic activity. They can be beneficial in both hyperestrogenic and hypoestrogenic state in the body. Thus they have mixed estrogenic and anti estrogenic actions, depending on target tissue. The pharmacological action of Shatavari is as follows - Antioxidant : Studies supported the fact that Asparagus racemosus is a potential oxidant and it can be used therapeutically to capture free radicals generating in the body. Immunomodulation : It has immune enhancing property by means of enhancing defense functions considerable in vitro antibacterial efficacy against E-coli, shigella dysenteriae, salmonella typhi, staphylococcus etc. Cardiotonic : It increased the force and rate of contraction in isolated frog s heart at moderate rates. Digestive : Both aerial parts and roots of Asparagus racemosus have amylase and lipase activities. Thus have digestive properties. Antiallergic : The root extracts exhibit anti allergic activity. It appears to increase the number of stem cells in the marrow and lymph tissue and stimulates their development into active immune cells.
4 Anti-oxytocic : Crude extract of Asparagus racemosus increases the uterine weight in estrogen primed group in experimental subjects. The saponin fraction of extract exhibits anti oxytocic activity producing a specific block of the pitocin introduced contractions. Estrogenic : Predominant cornification of epithelial cells have been observed due to presence of estrogenic activity in Shatavari. Also, it exhibits, mucilaginous, anti dysenteric, anti fungal, anti cancer, anti abortificiant (Shatavarin I ), anti oxytocic (Shatavarin IV), antiviral, anti amoebic, adaptogen, diuretic, nutritive, encouraging results. Shatavari was given to menopausal, premenopausal and postmenopausal women with risk factors of developing osteoporosis. They were administered Shatavari moola churna 6 gms per day with anupana milk. The results show significant change in biochemical bone markers (Serum calcium increased and urine calcium levels decreased) after treatment of 10 weeks which indicates decrease in bone loss. Shatavari enhances bone formation as well as decreases bone resorption. It acts on both ways and balances bone remodeling and hence can prevent bone loss and help in increasing bone mass. is beneficial for female body throughout life time from Puberty to Post menopause., i.e. all stages of life in maintaining reproductive functions and rendering uneventful postmenopausal life. It is my humble request to all practitioners to prescribe Shatavari extensively to all women; which will help to pass her reproductive life uneventful and its Rasayana effect will render her a healthy later half of her life. tonic, aphrodisiac, galactogoggue, antispasmodic, Continuation of treatment with Shatavari may minimize the uterine relaxant, stomachic, hypotensive and gastric sedative anti ulcer properties. A study of Shatavari on minimizing the risk of postmenopausal osteoporosis also revealed risk of developing postmenopausal osteoporosis. Concluding all these studies, it can be accepted that Shatavari is a versatile drug for female body. Its Panchabhautik as well as chemical constitution
